All of the staff was super friendly and very helpful
Greens were very fast. Real sand in the bunkers. Very playable for all.
NCGA value
Been awhile since I've been here and as always enjoyed it. The wind was us so the scores were also. The course has weathered the drought well.
Great experience all around.
Tee time was 12:30 (was hoping we'd finish inside of 4hr45min before dark). Pro shop let us go off 10min early and pace was great (we played as 2-some w/ very few periods of waiting). Finished in 3hrs15min, so played another (the 3rd) nine and got it in before dark. Awesome. Weather for Nov. was great (just a bit cool, and a bit windy). Greens excellent, fairways acceptable for the most part (considering the drought), Had rained 1.5-2.0 inches day before so greens receptive. Really like the layout...challenging and fair. Great deal on GolfNow. Consider it a treat to play this course. One of 2 NCGA owned (sister to Poppy Hills). Play if you get the chance, but can get windy in afternoons...just more of a challenge.
Too long difficult for short hitters
Overall great course/ challenging for a 20 handicap who drives are 180-200...they need a tee box between the white and red... Maybe about 5800 yards
Tournament play day
Hate playing behind tournaments because the players in it all turn into professionals and play at snail pace. Marshall has to say something to them for slow play but it didn't feel like they did anything about it which resulted in not being able to finish round. There has got to be a way you can tell if you are going to be behind a tournament when booking round online so you can make a decision if it will be worth it.
That said, course was in terrific shape, greens were very quick. Sand was good in most cases but group in front of us did not rake behind them well or at all which we could see from behind them.
Worth the trip from San Francisco
We made the one hour drive trip from SF and played on a Sunday afternoon. The greens were extremely quick but a little cut up as there had been a tournament earlier in the day. Other than that the course was in excellent condition and there are some challenging driving holes and bunkering. The staff were extremely helpful and moved us over to the Merlot 9 as play was slowing up due to the tournament. Overall a really good experience for the $60 green fee.
Exceptional experience Poppy Hills
This is one of the most beautiful course Ive experienced in Northern California. Certainly the most green, manicured with an interesting and surprising layout. Ill be back many times!
Good Outing
It was 103 degrees on a Wednesday afternoon so the course was wide open. Twosome played in 3 and a half hours. Course was in good shape for severe drought conditions. Hot deal made it affordable and a great value. Still one of my favorite tracks in the area.
Aerated Greens
Golfnow normally put A! on the available tee times to notify us your customers that the golf course was aerated the greens and it is still sandy. That was the case at Poppy Ridge and Golfnow did not have the A! icon on the tee times. I wouldn't have gone to this golf course if i knew it was just aerated.
Top East Bay Course
Good value, quality conditions, solid pace of play. Well organized.
this course is unique setting in the bay area.
This course looks a link course even though it's not became it's on top of a hill, and not many trees. So it's very windy.
Inland links course
Poppyridge is a links like course, that is actually no where near the ocean. Despite that short coming, I found the course enjoyable although a challenge to play when the wind is up, which is probably most of the time. The Merlot 9 was very hilly and the yardages were tough to figure out with the wind. The wind was able to alter driving distances by as much as 50 yards in some cases. Be prepared to practice your low, boring drives. There are multiple forced carries, and despite being a links course, the fairways are fairly narrow. The fairways and the greens both have a fair amount of undulation. Not a course for the beginning golfer. I also can not recommend it for the walker, unless they are quite fit. There are quite a few hills and some of the holes are quite a ways from each other. Overall an enjoyable round, but be prepared to play in windy conditions, particularly in the afternoons.
Second round
Merlot/Chardonnay -
Enjoyed our round very much, even with the weather in the high 90's. Green complexes were in great shape! Will be back soon.
Poppy Ridge
Courses are pretty well maintained and overall value is good. Pace of play is slow - 4:45 last two rounds with start times at 8:30a and 9a. Walking the course is tough given frequently very long distances between greens and tee boxes. Can be windy! All that being said, it's still a 3.5 to 4 star experience.
Always in excellent condition
This is one of my favorite courses in the Bay Area. It is always in excellent condition. Love he greens. Fast and challenging.
Quality and value
poppy ridge always delivers. Can't wait to play again.
Layout like housing development - with no houses?
I hate carts. I would not recommend playing this course without a cart. There is a lot of distance between greens and tees. So much that my cart's battery died at the 16th hole. I had to 'assist' the cart to get it back near the clubhouse.
The course is tough. Most interesting is the positions of the tees on the holes most effected by the wind. This region turns wind into electricity - there's a lot of wind.
3 9-holes is an interesting idea. Would it have made more sense to build just 18 holes and make it walkable? I'm not concerned about walking on hills. But going hundreds of yards from one green to the next tee is lame.
Beautiful course with nice views
Great course. Very challenging when it is windy. Needs better hot dogs, go for the Polish instead.
Great track and challenging
Played Poppy a few weeks ago. Course is challenging with a multitude of elevation changes. Greens are deceptively fast. You can score here if you put it in the fairway. Very much recommended.
One thing i thought needed work was the markings on the course. A holes are not well marked. You can walk this track but it'd be a grind.
Poppy Ridge
Course was in great shape. Fairways and greens in great condition. Not suffering from drought as of 5/1/2015. Very challenging especially from back tees in the afternoon. Greens rolled true all day. My friend Dan U shot a 74 from the tips for his best round at this course to date. Unstoppable.
