Great golf course and practice facility

Played Chardonnay and Zinfandel. The golf course is looking amazing considering the bad drought in California. Everything that needs to be green and manicured it was except for some patches here and there but it is only understandable with the lack of rain. I noticed the greens got aerated not too long ago but already filled in nicely and were putting true and consistent. Bunkers are in excellent shape with plenty of sand in them. Fairways were in good shape with some bare spots but not bad at all. The practice facility is without a doubt one of the best around the bay area. Can't wait to play here again!

little disappointing

i played the course on Monday afternoon and I hardly saw anyone on the course. Maybe because of the drought the course was in little disappointing condition but overall still good. Played in less than 4 hrs, they have a beautiful restaurant over looking 18th hole.

Scenic course

This is course has 3 9 holes so you play 2 of them.
I played Chardonnay and Zinfandel both great courses and in great shape. I was offered the opportunity to play merlot, but had to decline due to time constraint.
I will definitely come back and play. Being an NCGA member pays off as they give you a discount.

Home to Me

I am reviewing my home course so I'll give you the good and not so good here. I play 2-4 times per month, current handicap is 7.3.

In my opinion Poppy is a tremendous value for the green fees and dues NCGA members pay to play here. The three 9's are well designed, play long and are well bunkered. The greens are normally kept cut and run fast to very fast. The practice facilities here are unmatched at any public facility I have been at in the Bay Area- acres of targets, great bunker area, and a beautiful, large putting green. The range balls are almost always new to slightly used. The staff is very knowledgeable; Jeff (head pro and excellent player# runs a good group, and significant teaching program. The Pro Shop is well stocked with frequent sale-discounts apply for NCGA members. Demo clubs are available and of good quality and staff make it very easy to take them to the range or use during a round. Carts are generally in good shape and cleaned after every round. The food at the restaurant is very good to excellent and the bar stocks excellent brews and some very nice reds #way to go Mike!#. Service is usually excellent as well. There is always cart service during a round, our starters start, and the marshals, when there, actually marshal.

Ok, so here’s the not so good. When the wind is blowing #usually 1-2 clubs in the late morning and afternoon# this is a difficult course #hint- look at the slope ratings). Pace of play can be very slow depending on the quality of play of the group in front of you or if you have been wedged in behind a tourney or group. I have observed that many shooters do not match their handicaps to the appropriate tees and there is no checking or suggesting that someone move up prior to teeing off. This really adds to the pace of play as the high rough is very difficult to locate a ball in and almost impossible to hit an extraction shot from. Carts, on multiple occasions, have died on the back nine necessitating a replacement mid round and or mid hole. There are many Sat and Sunday events at the restaurant that will often keep you from enjoying your post round refreshment. Good for revenue generation but bad for enjoying the after round bliss. The range is brown and bare now. Yes, I understand there is a drought- I guess that’s the new green.

Overall, 27 holes of championship, tournament-level golf at a very reasonable rates with terrific support facilities.

Great course

Greens rolled out really nicely. Beautiful course, really fun layout. Awesome experience. I absolutely loved playing here.

Breakfast burrito was cheap and not very good. Margarita was way to sugary.

People were very friendly.

Definitely play this course

Poppy ridge is a great course; one of the better public courses in the area. Awesome cart service, skip the breakfast burrito, eggs are cooked in the microwave, the pastrami in the restaurant area is BOMB. The course is fun and challenging, you won't lose too many balls if you golf like me (85-100). Definitely coming back to play the 9 holes I missed, just need to make sure my coin is right at $90 a green fee.

Happy 4th of July

The course is in great shape considering the drought going on in California. Greens are fast but acceptive. Good practice and warm up areas. It does get a bit windy but was not to bad on this day. I have played from both the white and blue tee boxes and both have a good challenge.

Beautiful views on course

I enjoyed the course very much. Good thing to play with someone who knows the course, some blind second shots, and sloping fairways. Love the greens, was able to hit to pin or beyond and either stop or back up. Important to hit fairways, but rough is playable. Pro shop staff friendly, outside staff could use some cheering up, after all they are working at a golf course.

Windy but Worth it

The super twilight price for this course is one of the best values around. If the wind is ripping, the first few holes on Merlot can be extremely difficult... but eventually it dies down. One of the best courses in the area, nearly as nice as Wente but much more reasonable in price!

Great course and friendly personnel, weather was extremely windy

Everything about this outing was very good or better except the high afternoon winds. Guess that can't be helped. The equipment, fairways, greens, tees were all in great shape and all personnel were very helpful and available at all times. Will play again often but will start earlier in day to avoid the possible afternoon high winds.

back to back

I booked my round for Wed but thought I booked it for teus so I ended up playing both days. This really helped as this course has some slopes and nuances that will make determine strategy that only come with experience. I made a few good shots on Wed based on mistakes learned on Teus. The wind died down both days at about 2 pm the greens are pretty fast and hard but will hold a good shot. You need to miss below the hole as most greens slope pretty well down hill from back to front.
The staff was friendly and the course well maintained. This course is better than most and this time of year spring is the best time to play it. Mid week no waiting played all 3 9's and all are cool.

Wonderful Course!

First time at Poppy Ridge. This course is beautiful and well kept and well manicured. I must suggest you have to play well from sand bunkers to play this course because they are EVERYWHERE! I agree with the many reviews that there are really few trees and the grounds are very open yet hilly and picturesque. Holy gale force winds! We had an early tee time but until the clouds vacated it was cold and extremely windy. We played Merlot first then Chardonnay, and the guys at the pro shop said Merlot is higher in elevation and windy, so we were fairly warned. The marshals were informative and kept pace of play, our foursome did nicely and rarely had to wait for the group in front. I gave this course 5 stars on most everything except value for the money, even a deal on Golf Now only cut the price to $65. I believe in getting what I pay for but besides the vineyards nearby I have found similar golf at other courses for half the price. It is a wonderful course but at that price I will. It be playing there too often.

I forgot to mention the practice facilities. The driving range is immaculate and the range is sodded which means no hard mats to hit from. The practice range also provides several sand bunkers to practice from as well and numerous putting and chipping areas. One more comment about the sand bunkers...although I dislike being in the bunker, the quality of sand is unlike any other course. Superb quality sand, even though I hate being in it!
