Beautiful course
I love this course, second only to Poppy Hills. It's always a challenge. Everyone working there is always attentive and friendly.
Challengeable course
Poppy Ridge has private flavored courses. Comparing other courses near there, the fairway is narrow with strong wind. There is no flat green.
Such conditions make players feel challengeable.
Not recommended to beginners, but joyful to bogeys or singles.
Premier Course
When I want to play a course, I'm most concerned with the shape of a course. Of the multiple courses I've played all over the Bay, Poppy Ridge is bar none. From the practice facility to the course, it has the feel of a country club. Driving range off the grass, legit practice green with 2 large bunkers (needed for this course), large practice putting area with the same feel as greens on the course. Especially with the GolfNow discount, you can't beat this weekend price. The only one downfall was the weather, but that's our risk, it rained and was gusting 20-30 mph winds, which upped the difficulty. Regardless, on a bright sunny day, this course would play so well and I'm looking forward to that day. Staff was nice and the marshalls are always keeping everyone at a solid pace. Didn't like cart path only, but with fairways in that shape...no need to drive on soggy grass and ruin it during the rain; understandable. Bang for the buck, compares to Cinnabar in San Jose.
Excellent conditions and great vistas.
I played the Zinfandel/Merlot 9's and was very impressed at how well conditioned the course was. The bunkers were in great shape and consistent from hole to hole with fine, white sand. Open that wedge and use the bounce here. The greens were a good speed. Not too fast but definitely not slow. They were just right. The views of the Livermore valley were exceptional on this day as the sky was clear and blue and visibility was unlimited. The pace of play was right on 4 hours and I can't recall waiting on a tee box. The design of this course requires strategy. If you end up in a fairway bunker expect to drop a stroke. The faces are usually high and reaching the green from them is pretty tough. The fairways were firm, running and in great shape. No complaints. After my round I enjoyed a club sandwich (way better than your average club) and beer served up by very friendly staff in a great clubhouse atmosphere with views of the surrounding 9th holes coming back toward the clubhouse. It's the kind of place that makes you want to linger a while and just enjoy a great afternoon.
Poppy Ridge
Played the course many times, great views challenging and great views of the Livermore Valley.
A NCGA members course.
Poppy
Great deal for NCGA members. course in great shape, staff friendly and helpful==they wanted us to enjoy our day!
beautiful course great fairways with great greens
hadn't played at the course in about 10 plus years. Played it several times before but only remembered a couple of holes. Played Chardonnay and Zinfandel. Both sides in great shape fairways and greens. Sand traps were the best I've played from in a long time. They actually had sand. I would not recommend this course for beginners considering the tight fairways and fast greens. The weather was in the 70's. I like to walk but given the distance between holes and the terrain it would be tough. I'm retired so I'm adding it to my rotation of courses.
A great round at one of the best in the east bay.
A great round at one of the best in the east bay. Great deal with a NCGA Membership.
Play this course!
Outstanding course, with lots of challenges and varied holes. Probably the best practice facilities in the Bay Area. If you have not played here give it a try, this is a special course.
3 great 9's
As always it's a treat to play here. Only complaint would be because of the few of the cart path only holes divots are not replaced or sanded. Seems like great drives are rewarded with a na lie in a divot. But always look forward to playing here!
Excellent course great layout
Very enjoyable place to play. Highly recommended. The drawback when we played was pace of play-4 3/4 hours is far too long and not a marshall in site.
Good challenge
I'm a slightly better than average golfer. I shot a 97. The course seemed a bit tight for me. Fairways were more narrow than most. Got stuck in the water a few times. Greens seemed flatter than most but fast. Squirrels were under control which was nice to see. Layout was odd... Wouldn't want to walk it. The foursome in front continually held us up. Should have played a half hour faster. The scenery was better than most, but not by much. I felt the course was too pricey. Maybe that is why you don't build golf courses in wine country.
It is a true PGA course. Fun and challenging.
Poppy Ridge is an exceptional course. 3 nine holes continue to attract me back every single time.
excellently maintained course with very friendly staff.
I used to play a lot when I had NCGA membership due to reasonable price but, not being an member, it's just too expensive. other than price, the course has not changed at all in the sense of fairway condition of the course and fast greens. Bunker sands fluffy and great too. Love it!
Beautiful Sunday morning
Only 90 rounds booked for the day. C'mon folks, come play Poppy Ridge! Played at 7:50 and finished at 11:30, great pace! Greens were aerated recently but still rolled true and fast. Great vineyard views and no noise except the occasional small plane overhead.
Great course.
The course was in terrific condition. I loved the scenic location.
The course is only challenging if you fail to hit the fairways.
Beautiful Course - Is it always windy?
I've played here a few times now, and so far, every time we play, it has been unbearably windy. Now I realize it was unusually windy on 10/27 when we played, but it was pretty much the same experience we always have a Poppy. Time to plant some wind-break trees or something?
Tough but fair
Love the Zinfandel course. Merlot is for the longer drivers.
