It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.

The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

Greens were very fast and treacherous. Course was in good shape except for a few bare spots in the fairway.

Decent course but not worth the price

I’ve read some good reviews about this course & the photos online looked appealing but after spending $150 for 18-holes on a course that’s equivalent to many $50 courses, this was my first and last time I’d play at Bayonet. The fairways were in decent shape but many patches of uneven grass cuts, divots and overall lack of maintenance, made them less than desirable to play on for $150.

The greens were okay and run pretty smooth, quick and fair, for the most part but again, lack of maintenance and a bunch of divots on practically every green and I don’t have the desire to play at this course again. Lastly, I was disappointed there wasn’t a drink cart during the entire 18-holes I played and tee’d off around 10:30am on a Saturday. Lastly, there’s a ton of hole construction around the course with many trees cut down and more opportunities to lose a ball and the distracting sounds and movement of home construction. This could be going on for the next year or more, it appears.

Overall I’d rate this course a 3 out of 5 stars but for the price alone, I’d knock it down to 2 stars.

Bad Bayonet

Compared to the Blackhorse course, Bayonet was a disappointment. Fairways and bunkers were not in great conditions; however greens were great.

Also the starter was not very friendly.

Overpriced Beat Up Track with Uninterested Staff

Greens had either lots of sand or literal holes and ruts in them, no warning online or from the golf shop, no discount either. Course just not well cared for, tee boxes torn up and tons of unfixed divots in the fairway. A real disappointment at $130. This used to be a gem and cost about half- and not all that long ago. Note the picture of a giant bag of trash left out on the tee box, and a mediocre at best lie in the middle of the fairway.

greens in rather poor shape

I was surprised the greens at this normally excellent course had so many issues....not just unrepaired ball marks which can happen anywhere but many greens had serious irregularities and damage.

Great Great track with poor condition and maintenance

Greens are in bad shape and fairways can be better!! Looks like “no one cares” condition right now… These are premium High Quality tracks which deserve better care.. I will still keep playing as a big fan but for outsiders they should get better conditions to do justice to the quality of design!!
