It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.

The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

Shine fading

I have always loved this course but this time i played, the greens were terrible. Some sort of disease perhaps but the loss of grass on the greens left actually small “craters” so the ball got deflected, etc. terrible. One option would to have put the pins in the good remaining parts of the green, but not so.

And of course, the rapid housing development just detracts from what used to be a wonderful experience. For this area, one would think a more tasteful development would have been done, nestle houses among the old trees. No chance. It was clear cut, put down cement slabs and put up tract homes. All formulaic. Terrible. Did they need to sell that many lots? Am i going to spend 7 figures to live thirty feet from my neighbor in the exact same house? I think not.

Maybe the superintendent will figure out the greens. They should make more like a seaside course, with a more sparse like grreen when it comes to grass density. Much like one sees on the links courses in the UK. Or accept the “po” and live with it.

Bayonet

Played Friday @ 11:30am, the day and course conditions were perfect. The pace of play was excellent until the last 2 holes, still overall 4 hours and fifteen minutes was very enjoyable.

They’ve ruined this course

Well,

They decided to build homes on this once beautiful course. During the week they are building houses and it’s noisy and very distracting. There are new spots that are OB that weren’t before. Once the houses are completed it might be better, but I’m not very optimistic. The greens are in bad shape and they are not really watering everything evenly. I used to love how peaceful and beautiful this course was. But that is over as they have caved to selling the property to idiots who wish to be peppered with golf balls if they decide to drink their over priced coffee in the back yard. Good luck

Greens

Be aware that the greens on Bayonet are horrible. Lots of deep bare patches. Must've had some sort of grass fungus or something.

I made the reservation with my Wednesday buddies who were not pleased. They complained all day. Not fun when your putt, for big money, misses due to bad greens. Couldn't even repair things satisfactorily with our green's tools.

I'm not used to these conditions there. Played there many many times and never seen it like this. Boo hoo.

Bayonet

Loved it! Course was in great shape. We moved very well but never seemed to be pressured to pick our pace up. Will definitely be back thought it was a great value compared to some of the other courses up in the Monterey peninsula.

Bayonet/Black Horse Review August 2022

Bayonet was in excellent condition, although currently there is multi-site single family construction in process all over the course which was somewhat disruptive. The home construction @ Black Horse was even more interrupting to our play, and Black Horse’s condition was surprising below expectations; several bare spots, hard-pan, and burned -out greens that never should exist even on a muni course (which these are not supposed to be). Still better than paying $350 + for a round of golf at Pebble Beach courses, however. So it’s all relative . . . just a little disappointing since I last played these courses 2 years ago on my last vacation to this area from another state.

Slightly Over Rated

So like any other course trying to get play activity up for revenue, they have a tendency to over rate themselves!

Prior to the housing being built the track had more appeal.

So now it seems to be a track that likes to stack people out there ! Greens are not well cared after nor are the tee boxes. The place has potential to be a great slow resort place if your into that sort of place! Needless to say, the new look is terrible

Ruined Bayonet

I’ve been playing both courses for years and overall through the years it has been fantastic golf. Unfortunately, that is over, as they decided to completely ruin the beautiful scenery with big ugly houses in the middle of the course (Bayonet). They failed to mention at the club house the housing construction going on in the middle of course. For once was a mystique beautiful course is now riddled with the sounds of saws, hammering, backing trucks and dust. I will not play Bayonet ever again unfortunately, even after they Finnish the houses, as now a small slice off the tee on holes 3-8 will end up in some persons back yard, and be out of bounds, as prior you’d be just hitting out of hazard. Very sad day for once was a wonderful course.

Course has changed over the years

I have been playing Bayonet for many years and the course continues to have a gradual decline. First the conditions of the green are very bad. On hole 17 putted for birdie but the greens were so damaged could not roll the put. In the past the greens were alot faster then they are today. The bunkers had very little sand and the fairways no longer are being kept up. In the middle of the fiarways there would be patches of grass and in some cases weeds. If I did not get a good deal through Golf Now I really would have been more upset. It is one of my favorite layouts but it looks like they are putting more money on housing on the course then the course itself. Even the practice putting greens were a joke

Course Conditions Getting Worse

Bayonet and Black Horse are two of my favorite courses to play. I'm local and play these courses often. Unfortunately the course conditions have started to go downhill over the past year. These courses have always been known for their amazing greens. Lightning fast with multiple tiers and the putts always rolled true. This is not the case anymore. The greens are getting worse by the week with pitting and grassless sections throughout. Ball marks aren't fixed by many players and it doesn't seem like the course fixes them either. It's disappointing but still great courses. Hopefully this is a short-term problem and the green keepers can get these courses back to standard soon!
