It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.

The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

Bayonet

The greens were freshly aerated and some of the fairways were punched, making the round a little difficult. And most of bunkers were like hitting off concrete. Still had fun, but a little expensive considering the conditions.

Great Course for good money but....

Had a day off on our Road Trip and spontaniously played Bayonet. Course was in very good condition an pace of play was good (3 1/2 hours in a twosome with buggy but behind a foursome) and the layout is very nice. Some very challanging holes (played from the back tees) and some risk an reward ones.

Only downer was the price for rental clubs. I was shocked by that. Charged 75$ per set and it was all Callaway but with mixed shafts. Some stiff, some regular one even A. That was nearly the same amount as the greenfee including buggy, so way out of line. That is why the overall rating is not 5 stars. So, if you have your own clubs, great course to play, if you are on vacation without your clubs, then think twice.

Extremely good course

Extremely good course, layout is absolutely fantastic and challenges all types of golfers. Very tight tree lined course but very picturesque. The practise area one of the best I’ve seen.

Only thing that lets it down is they have allowed construction for houses to be built on the majority of the front 9 so lots and lots of building work up and down about 8 of the holes. Other than that it’s worth a drive to play for sure. Bring your A game though as it’s very tough.

Nice Course, well worth the money

Overall everything was great, only down side was the rental clubs. They were ok, but 75$ for one set is quite heavy…

Pretty amazing conditions

No complaints. Wish I brought my .22. Ground squirrels were too tame.

Gorgeous course and experience.

Big long layout. Super hard and fast greens. The locsls say this is similar experience to the more expensive courses in the area. But lower cost. Beautiful cypress trees. One of my favorites to play in the area.

Great staff, Good layout, poor course condition

The conditions of the course in mid March are very rough. Greens not filled in and rough putting and the fairways very patchy. Hard to find any nice grassy areas. I am sure it is just the time of year where not warm enough to grow grass. If you are local, continue to play the course but if you re visiting I would not recommend playing the course this time of year because of the poor condition. and the rates are too high for this poor condition. This is the former Ft Ord golf course and very disappointed they do not have a military rate.

Course layout is great but condition has worsened :-/

This course used to be my must-play in Monterey area for the price-value but it's no longer true. Played baoynet and BH yesterday -- lots of bare spots, including tee boxes.

Green remains fast but super bumpy. my ball has to roll over large spots filled with sand.

Understandably the CA drought makes brown the new green, but still very disappointed to see the green quality.
