The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.
The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

The old army course changing
So much construction going on. Sadly within one yr, the place will be filled with houses. A slower development would have been easier to get used to. Now homes going up everywhere. Do not like some of the re routing of holes, just for development. Bayonet 11 and 15 were the ones mostly missed. Course shaped improved from a few months ago.
Pace of play crazily slow for a Thursday. One group was so slow! Marshall was nice and responsive in moving folks through that group, though they never should have to. No awareness on their part.
Always a good outing
The course was in very good conditions, even after all the rain in late December. Greens were fast as always, so need to few rounds to get accustom. It is unfortunate that there seems to be housing construction within a few holes and extremely close to a few fairways.
Bayonet -Highly Disappointed
Played this course forty years ago-Awesome
Played Jan. 2022 TERRIBLE CONDITION !
What an absolute waste of a great design and location. Who allowed this to happen ???
Fortunately I got a break on green fees through Golf Now. $119 vs $195, if I had paid $195 I may have sued them.
I WARN YOU, don’t play it !
Please get a new owner who can treat this property with some respect.
Course is pure right now
Been playing here for over 10 years, and this is the best condition it’s ever been in.
Greens must have been rolling 11 on the stimp
Disappointing
While the views were spectacular, the course was engulfed with fungus, and the greens were cut so close that it was as if there was no grass. I guess I had overly high expectations, especially for the price.
Good, but not great
Played Bayonet and the layout is great. This is a course worth playing and is fair. . Due to the heavy rain in the last few weeks, the fairways were in only fair shape. The greens were good. A little pricey for a Monday morning given the conditioning.
Noise
I love Black Horse & Bayonet! However, there is a ton of construction on the Bayonet side right now. I don’t expect the quiet tranquility of a pga event, but it is really noisy at Bayonet right now. TONS of construction and cleanup underway. The entire round was filled with construction noise: nail guns, wood saws, hammering; plus the noise of heavy equipment: loud diesel engines and back up whistles sounding. Plus: chain saws cutting trees and mulchers shredding bark. It was like playing right in the middle of a construction site. It took us 4.5 hrs to plat 13 holes. We had to pick up and head out as we had dinner plans after
Saw a Resting Mountain Lion or Bobcat
Golf was great!! Weather perfect, clear and warmish.
course eval
Course was very challenging, however the new house construction / building going on around the holes was a bummer. It took away from the beauty of the course, very sad. Front nine hearing saws, nailing, etc was not appealing. Greens were tough, blind second shots and change in elevation a blast.
Great experience
Lovely little course. Really enjoyed the layout. Good practice facility. Pace of play good, great value for the area. The clubhouse veranda is a nice place to sit when the sun is out. Course was in excellent condition and I would play it again if in the area.
Not currently worth the cost
Practice Facilities are nice but in fair to moderate condition. Staff & bar/restaurant facilities are very good.
Greens are in rough shape, firm, fast but too many un-true rolls. Tee boxes well laid out but show alot of use and lack of divot repair by players & staff.
Fairways firm and mowed tight, no issues there. Rough is fine even for the average players. Play was slow but not horrible for a Saturday. 4 & 1/2 hour round.
Cannot beat the views just needs some TLC.
Bayonet is in poor shape
Played the Bayonet course yesterday. The course is in poor shape - patchy fairways and bouncy hard greens which are not rolling true. They are building houses all over the course and it's a mess with construction debris, noise and equipment all over the place.
