The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.
The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

Course layout is great but condition has worsened :-/
This course used to be my must-play in Monterey area for the price-value but it's no longer true. Played baoynet and BH yesterday -- lots of bare spots, including tee boxes.
Green remains fast but super bumpy. my ball has to roll over large spots filled with sand.
Understandably the CA drought makes brown the new green, but still very disappointed to see the green quality.
Excellent challenge
Following the sand on the beaches, next in line would be the sand traps, the greens are in their winter hybernation so don’t expect to make your usual amount of short putts, love the place.
Great Monterey Course
Course is in great shape, all around from tee box to bunkers to greens. Some construction going on and can get a little loud but overall thus is a great value for a great course.
Bayonet: Hard & Fast
Bayonet.Blackhorse are two of my favorite courses in the Monterey area. I've been playing these courses for years and always enjoy the experience. This time, the drought condition was evident. The course is generally in pristine condition, but it was a bit worn and beat up in some places (tee to green). Like most courses in northern California, lack of water is having an impact. I still enjoyed the round and the staff was friendly and helpful (as usual).
A good value
Bayonet is always a good value. Typically a round with cart will cost around $80. The course is laid out nicely and is a good test. It’s always in pretty good shap although sometimes a little thin in the winter.
Disappoint with course condition
We played here a few years ago. I was so excited to come back to play but was disappoint with the condition of the course. The green was dry. Green speed was fast but not roll true as the ball slow down. Course overall was dry. Due to the dryness, the course does not look as nice as I once remember.
Great disappointment
I had heard my whole military career what a wonderful course this was...and I think at one time it most likely was, but not now. It is however an excellent layout and I can see that it had its tine as a great golf facility. I just felt completely disappointed with the overall course conditions...maybe it was the wrong time of the year, I just don't know. Two people in the pro shop, one was just there to take ur payment, the other was much more friendly and shared information about the course. Just my opinion.
Friendly Staff, Bad Greens
The course conditions, specifically the greens was very disappointing. The green was lumpy and sparcely grassed, didn't roll true and the ball skipped across the surface. The green condition was very much like what you would expect at an economy pitch and putt.
Great course, poor conditions
Bayonet course wasn’t up to the normal quality that we were used to.. Greens were terrible, uneven, bumpy and very poor quality. Tee boxes were very tore up and fairway’s were thin and grass was spotty. I’m not sure how this course could go from a 5 star to no better the a 2 star. I hope they bring it back to the top condition it used to be.
Nice views and some cool holes
Great views of the ocean from most holes, I played both courses and course condition is for sure an issue, fairways are not in the best shape, or are the tee box’s also the greens are maybe some of the worst I have ever seen, and I play a lot of courses, almost like painted dirt, and no way can u get a ball to check and stay on green, so many good shots just flying off the green, there is no reward for good shots on this course, not a lot of fun to be had here, very frustrating golf courses, and I was playing fairly well! I will not play here again!! Also on one hole there was a very large squirrel caught in a trap and very much in pain, so very disturbing , it was a horrible experience, night mare material !!!
Wow it's been a while!
It has been a few years since I've played here. Course conditions perhaps not as good as I remembered before.
Tee boxes were full of divots as well as some fairways. Could be because of CA is basically in a drought. Greens were still pretty quick and difficult though. Course used to always be pristine and in great condition. Course is still quite challenging and tough.
Deteriorated course condition
Have played both courses many times, enjoying the layout, views, and conditions. While the first two continue, the conditions (tees, fairways, and greens) have deteriorated significantly. Sparse grass patches make up the fairways, tees are hacked up, and the greens are super hard with thin grass. Nothing holds on the greens. Hopefully, Troon can bring the course back from the depths.
The facilities are quite nice and the staff extremely friendly and helpful.
