The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.
The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

Bayonet Requires Staight Shots
One of my favorite courses. Challenging for all skill sets. Approaches need to be in right quadrant or your putt might have four breaks to contend with. Traps are tough but fair as is the rough. Bay views from many holes. One the day I played the pace of play was slow as we had to wait on most holes. 4:45 to play 18 and no Marshall in site. The number to the restaurant at the 9th tee didn’t work so no sandwich at the turn. But both courses are GREAT tracks. Carts come with free water and often, with Hot Deal on Golf Now a bag of practice balls to warm up with. The range includes a chipping green with traps, natural grass stalls and target greens.
Hidden gem
This place is amazing...you will seldom play a course this well kept. A few holes even have views of the bay. Enjoy!
Are you up to the challenge?
We played the Bayonet course which like BH is under improvement for the upcoming PGA , would like to play a few weeks before to see it at its best , plan on many 3 putt greens, take time to savor the surroundings
On the hill by the bay
One of very few that you can enjoy your round on a rainy day. Just be prepared it is normally colder here. Excellent course layout. Greens are always in great condition. Very tricky but fun . Will definitely come back again.
Wonderful Golf Course
Almost ready to go for the season when we played, course was in really good shape, but we know it's only going to get better , fantastic and really fun layout, a true test... Please play the right tees.. Greens were absolutely treacherous (which added to the fun of the course), I would highly recommend theses 2 courses to anyone who wants a tough challenge and a Great day of golf...the Pro shop and Starter were perfect at their jobs, once again... A great day was had by us.. Thank You..
Fun but tough course!
I talked to one of the locals about the course and they say it is the toughest in Monterey Bay. Bayonet is a beautiful course that is fun to play. Black horse is beautiful when you are standing on the tee but the greens are just plain stupid. If you are more than 13ft forward, left, right or back of the pin then you are most likely off the green into a collection area with little to know chance of getting the ball close to the hole. Bayonet has much better greens but they are still very tricky.
Getting ready for the club pro PGA.
Golf course is in very good shape, greens are firm and fast. They are getting ready for the PGA tournament in June. Big piles of mulch in the tree areas to beautify the course, which the staff are spreading out. As always the course is very difficult but worth playing. Great views of the ocean on many holes. Food is good in the restaurant, but enjoy the ocean view because the service is always extremely slow.
Oh the weather outside is frightful...
Rain rain rain. Mud on your face. Mark, Pick up and clean that ball. i am glad they let us go and play. Only the brave was out there. Teeing off in the rain is a different experience. Wider stance. Shorter swing. Remember all those tips because you need them. Take an extra club because the ball is not rolling. I will come back when the weather is better and give a better review.
Great Track for a great price
I played Bayonet after playing at Pebble Beach and before playing Spanish Bay Bayonet is an excellent course the fairways are perfect the greens afast and have lots of twists and turns. The fairways are tree lined to accuracy off of the tee is a must. I have not mentioned the great views of the bay you can be in the middle of a Forrest and look out to a great view of the bay. The starter was extremely friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend this course in addition to the big name courses.
One of the best in the srea
We've played this course many times, love the challenge as it mirrors the tour courses
Good value, great course, fast greens
Great value, the course was in great shape, with very fast greens! Beautiful to look at from tee box, would recommend. Near Pebble, but note that this course is inland and has very limited sea views. Not scenic per say, but great course layout and bunkering, allowing for clear lines from the tee.
The under tree areas were under maintenance when we played, piles of wood chips laying everywhere, but this is temporary. Overall, a great challenge and great course conditions. Driving range was off mats, but nice practice area. Go if you are in the area, I played as a warm up to Pebble.
Great course for the value
Always a very good experience although traps were hard an inch under fluffed top.
Some G.U.R.
Caught a day of wind and biting cold.
Better keep it straight off the TEE or huge trees will get you.
Good practice facility
Great experience
Always wanted to play Bayonet and Black Horse. Did my Basic Trgn. @ Ft. Ord 48 years ago. Myself and the rest of the maggots didn’t have much time for Pgolf so I finally made it back. Coarse layout is cha P one in front or back Pof us, it was pure pleasure. I will Abe back.
Course name is appropriate
Feels like I've been impaled on a bayonet after I finish a round and add the scorecard. Greens were lightening fast. Mistakes can cost several strokes.
Got to be my favorite to play.
Bring your A game
Bayonet tests all parts of your game. On the tee you need to decide which club to pull to avoid the fairway bunkers. It’s not just bombs away with the driver. On your approach, often you’ll have either a downhill or uphill lie. Again, club selection is key. If you can execute and get on the green, you’ll be faced with beautifully manicured greens with ridges and slope. If you’re on the wrong side of the ridge, you can look forward to your ball rolling to the fringe. I hit 10/14 fairway and still shot +10 of my average. I’m a 10 handicap straight up no mulligans, do overs or any of that elementary nonsense. It was my first time playing the course so now I figured out some things. Looking forward to getting my revenge the next time I play. This course is amazing! The staff made me feel like I was a guest on Fantasy Island.
Outstanding day of golf
The course was in perfect condition tee to green, including the bunkers (and I was in a lot of them). This is a challenging layout with tree-lined fairways and large, fast, undulating greens. Bring your A-game. The views of Monterey Bay are breath-taking and the staff was very friendly. This experience rivaled Spyglass and Pasatiempo at a fraction of the cost.
