What an awesome hole. This course could be SO good with help. Photo submitted by jarrett3112794 on 07/11/2016
Greens are all punched!
No warning that all of the greens were punched. But, with the great deal I got - it was still worth it. I could tell it's a nice track when the greens are in good shape. Will come back after the greens heal.
Good value
Breakfast, lunch and 2 drinks included in price which was reasonable for 18 holes with cart in FL.
Five Hour Round Anyone?
This is a tough review for to write because I play here regularly but I can't hold back anymore because the new owners have let this place go. First off it took 4 hours 50 minutes to play today(Saturday). They had no starter and no ranger. At one point we pulled up to the par 3 eighth hole and we became the 4th group on that hole.
It was 95 outside today and every single water jug on the course was bone dry. Thank God for the super nice beverage cart girl who we got to see three times to pay for water.
Ive been playing this course since shortly after it opened some 18 years ago and this is the worst Ive ever seen it. Don't let the pictures you see on their website fool you. Those were taken over ten years ago and the course looks nothing like it anymore. Greens have weeds growing in them(I thought you were supposed to replace the greens every 15 years or so?). Bunkers had little to no sand in them. Fairways weren't bad and tee boxes were just okay. That par 3 I mentioned earlier had zero grass on back by the #2 tee markers. It was like hitting out of a fairway bunker.
They have lowered their rates drastically recently but even with the lower rates this place is just not worth it anymore. I would rather go pay $50 to play river strand or esplanade where everything is bright green. Bunkers have sand and them and the greens roll great because they have grass growing on them
Fun course
Solid. First tee time so flew. Fun course, challenging but playable. In pretty good shape. Would recommend at $50 a round.
Just awful
It is hard to find many positives here. Greens were poorly maintained with bare patches or areas like a shag carpet. Bunkers were in poor shape and need sand. The scorecard images on some holes didn't match the course. I know folks will discuss how it is coming back. I doubt I will ever play here again based off of this experience. Definitely not worth 29.99 for the round
Continue the comeback
Haven't played here in years due to poor conditions. The last time I played it was almost unplayable. The greens were like velcro and brown patches everywhere. I heard it was under new management and that conditions are getting better so I thought I'd give it a shot. They also offer the GolfBoard and that was a major factor. Saw a bunch of maintenance guys working on the course so conditions are getting better. Greens are in good condition. Slow but true. Fairways are good and hardly any brown patches. Tee boxes are green again, although some tee boxes are overgrown with St Augustine. Old front is now the new back 9. That old frontside is one of the best layouts in the area. Don't think it's worth the $80 yet but I hope they continue to revive this fun track.
It was my first time on a GolfBoard. It definitely makes golf more fun. It's great to hop-off next to the tee box and greens, and it speeds up play! Only thing missing is shade. They charge $5 extra for the round.
Still needs a lot of work
Wanted to try Legacy again after staying away several years due to poor conditions. Knowing that there was new ownership & Seeing a couple recent favorable reviews urged me to give it a try. Unfortunately, conditions are still very poor. Greens are better than in recent years, but still don't compare to others in the SRQ area. Fairways are loaded with weeds w/ several bare spots & the rough is nothing but weeds & hard pan. Bunkers are extremely thin of sand & weren't even turned over or raked out on day we played. Even with a $45 hotdeal, course in todays climate is not worth the price. Admittedly one of the greatest layouts around, Mr Palmer would cringe if he returned to this course & saw the conditions. As a note, Mr. New owner...this is Florida.....how can you give customers 2 styro cups (without lids & straws) with dirty ice in a dirty cart cooler meant to hold beverages????? As well, when making the turn at 3:30 clubhouse already closing up & NOTHING available for purchase except canned beer. Upon completion of round, EVERYTHING locked down & NOTHING available , including bathrooms!!!! Mr. Owner....you lost at least $100 in revenue from our foursome in concession sales!!! Hard to be a premier golf club in Sarasota/Bradenton when you don't offer the complete package!!! Sorry, know you're trying, but out of the 13 courses we played in 14 days....yours was last on the list for my friends who came to visit, and all of them said would not want to play next year!!! Hopefully the summer will be a good growing season & overseed, overseed, & overseed. THIS COURSE NEEDS GRASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will try again next year when return in November, as it is & always will be an awesome layout....however if still is dog track condition wise, will take off the must play list Forever!!!! Just too many better options in the area!!!
Still a long way to go!!!
Wanted to try Legacy again after many years of staying away due to poor course conditions, and seeing some positive reviews (should have known as they were all from members). Admittedly, one of Arnie's greatest designs, and with fond memories of what the course used to be, thought would give it a shot. Unfortunately, the course is only a tad above a dog track in terms of conditions, although greens are showing some promise. Fairways are still very bare in numerous spots & loaded with all kinds of weeds ( and tons of unfilled divots!!!) and the rough is mainly bare or weeds....sand traps, which of course there are numerous, were all un turned over & lacking sand. Even with a hot deal price of $45, no way will I be returning this year, with so many courses available at half the price & in twice as good of shape. Undoubtedly this is one of the areas premier layouts....unfortunately it's in the bottom half with regards to conditions. I know new owners & give them credit for trying to improve, but price should more coincide with conditions....sorry. Hopefully a good growing season summer & overseed, overseed, overseed!!!!! One last comment...we played on a Saturday ,& when making the turn, bar/restaurant in process of closing at 4!!!!! No dogs or sandwiches, just beers & when finished at 6 EVERYTHING was closed. Mr. Owner, you probably lost about $100 in food & beverage sales from our 4 some!!!!! S M H !!!!! Hard to bring Legacy back to the #1 status it used to have when you don't deliver the entire package. Also, this is Florida...where's the ice & water machine? Dirty ice & 2 styro cups in the dirty cooler on the cart??????? WTF is that?????? Mr Palmer would cringe if he were to return!!!!
Legacy is back
I must admit that I am a member so I might be a bit prejudiced. Legacy under this new ownership has shown a significant improvement in the past 3-6 months. The members can see the steady improvements being made with respect to the greens and fairways. Legacy if it remains on this track will once again become "The Destination Course" it was originally intended o be when built.
This cours is a challenge to all levels of players
As a long time member of Legacy, it is great to see what the new ownership has accomplished in a short period of time. The course conditions have improved greatly and Legacy will once again become "The Destination Course" it was originally advertised to be.
Conditions continue to improve (greens are once again in good condition and putting true). Fairways and course grooming is also improving.
Challenging Layout
I have been a member at Legacy for a few years now and want to say that the playing conditions are steadily improving since the new ownership took over last year. This is a great public golf course. It has all the mixture of a challenge and playability. You better commit to your club selection or get bit as par will have it's way with you. It is so nice to see this course come back to the glory Arnold Palmer days.
Great Track
This is a great track, nice layout, need to have an approach shot. I booked on golfnow for 1 so I joined a threesome I only payed $18.
challenging course for me
I play without GPS and I don't play this course often enough to know the distances on dog legs. The same things that make this course interesting / challenging, make it frustrating without the GPS.
Let down
Played legacy last January. Pace of play suffered due to lack of Rangers, but course layout and conditions made me anxious to come back this year. I was let down. They reversed front and back side and that was a mistake because the old front side has great character and starts you off enthusiastically. The greens, including practice green, were not good compared to courses in the area. Pace of play was still a problem. They do offer free lunch and/or breakfast, but it just doesn't make up for the deterioration of this once outstanding golf course.
Too Costly for the Course Condition
Course was promoted as a great place to play
Well over rated for the course conditions
Tee Boxes poor condition
Bunkers horrible, hadn't rain in 2 days and still wet
Bunkers were like hard pan and very little sand
Most greens were ok
Definitely expected for the price
Staff was very good, except for waitress in restaurant, we seemed to be an inconvenience to her
We will not return
Over booked
This was my first time back to Legacy in 5 years, what a difference. My main gripe is that the course was overbooked. We had a 1:56 tee time, when we arrived we were told we would be starting on hole 10, no explanation given. When we arrived at hole 10 we found a 6 group back up. Seems they had booked some kind of teaching session with a group of 30 players. Needless to say it took us over 3 hours to play nine holes on a course that was in a much less pristine state then the one I had played years earlier. The couple paired with us bailed after 9 and we hustled around the front getting in almost 8 holes and playing until complete darkness.
Its too bad because this was supposed to be the highlight of our golf vacation and instead it was by far the biggest disappointment. If only Arnie could see this course today, I am sure it would bring a tear to his eye. I will give the course conditions a slight pass due to the weather the area has experienced in the past few weeks. sadly , I will not return.
couse in good shape
Able to tee off as soon as we arrived, good condition, friendly staff
Challenging Golf
Great time appreciating the lay out and challenges of the greens, also!! Wish the pace of play was faster---4 hours would be ideal--not 5 hrs. Plus!!---- With too many waits between shots! Well organized staff and very helpful in getting started for a new adventure of golf!!
As the new owners at Legacy Golf Club since November, we appreciate the review of our course. Very happy to hear you enjoy the layout ....yes it is certainly a spectacular design. We thank our lucky stars each week that Mr. Palmer did some FINE WORK here. We're happy to report that as we enter growing season that Mother Nature is smiling on us and we now are able to implement our spring/summer plans to make GREAT IMPROVEMENTS to conditions. We've had some very fine comments in recent weeks about the greens and fairway conditions and have every confidence that the conditions will soon match up with the quality of our design, our F&B Operations and the cheerful value that you can expect when you come to Legacy. Look forward to seeing you again soon.
Best,
Jon
