Rating 73.8

The highly popular El Campeon Course at Mission Inn Resort consistently ranks in the top 10 of Florida's many golf courses. The course originally opened in 1917 and decades later in 1992, it was joined by a second 18-hole course, Las Colinas. El Campeon is not only one of the state's oldest golf courses but also one of its most challenging. The traditional design remains largely unchanged except for a renovation in 1926. The course winds through towering forests and numerous spring-fed lakes. The layout features water on thirteen holes as well as dramatic elevation changes that measure over 85 feet across the rolling fairways and undulating greens. The signature hole of the golf course is the par-5 17th. This lengthy double dogleg possesses more hazards than some entire courses do.

Great track, hampered by slow pace of place

We drove about an hour to come play El Campeon, after hearing nothing but great things about it. A great rate on GolfNow was all the excuse we needed to make the drive.

The course didn't disappoint. It's definitely a challenge - and might be the hilliest layout in Florida. Played with a senior in the group so we all played up a tee box - and even having moved up, this was a challenging test of golf.

Conditions were totally acceptable. Nothing to write home about, but nothing I ever noticed as less than acceptable. The course was hosting the Orlando Am so it was getting a fair bit of use.

Pace of play was really the only issue. Despite the course being relatively empty late in the afternoon, we were stuck behind a fivesome (including a small child) who was then stuck behind a slow twosome. There was seemingly nobody else around. There was no ranger on the course while we were out there and so we found ourselves waiting on every tee box.

In short, the course was awesome, the people were great - and if they can just figure out how to better handle pace of play issues (which I know is not easy! Something every course struggles with) then this will be a must play for those visiting Central Florida!

Beautiful course. Very difficult. Pace of play sucks

Seems like the Whites were moved to where the blues should be. There were no black tees the blues were in place of the blacks it seems. Score cards reflects that there are black tees but black tees were nowhere on the course. Starter should have said something but didn’t. Some good drives had no chance of making the fairways. Most drives left approach shots needing 6 irons and a lot more.

Instead of golfing it started to feel like work. 7 holes to go and couldn’t wait for the round to end. Only reason I stayed was because of price I payed and wanting to see rest of the course. I’m glad I played it but it will be my last time! Special tee time price and paid $95 to watch the group in front of me play golf. No ranger the whole time. It’s a real shame could have been special! When the starter sends you to the first tee and the group in front of you hasn’t even tee’d off yeti you pretty much know right away that the day is going to be awe full and it was. My $37 round two days prior was fantastic compared to El Campion hurry up and wait golf course!!! I stray away from reviews. I’ve never filled one out until now. Be forewarned fellow golfers. If yo can hit it 260 or more your experience will be much better except for the slow pace of play.

Unless you are a single digit HDCP, Play the Gold Tees!!

This is a beautiful golf course but it is a very difficult course. I played the Blue Tees with a 2 handicapper. I am a 13. He shot an amazing 77. The course kicked my tail and I was in the upper 90s. Lesson learned, unless you are a single digit handicapper, don't play the Blue or the White tees, play the Golds or you won't have any fun but instead will be frustrated. The winds were fairly calm when I played. Had they picked up, I probably would have hit triple digits.

This is a very scenic course. A lot of water comes into play. The greens were smooth and slick, but held upon approach. Easy to 3 putt if you are unskilled at putting. That was the one thing I did correctly, no 3 putts.

A long drive from Orlando, time wise, but scenic. Eat before you get there. The kitchen doesn't open up until 11 am.

It would have been nice if be informed of a tournament, ongoing. Was told it was wrapping up and delayed playing time. Pin placements were set for pro, not frequent golfers :(
