About

Holes 18
Type Resort
Par 72
Length 6543 yards
Slope 137
Rating 71.9

The Barony Course at Port Royal Golf Club constitutes 18 of this well-known island facility's 54 holes.

Playing to just 6,543 yards from the gold tees, Barony is a very enjoyable course for all skill levels. The back nine in particular is a fine mix of long and short holes. Like its sister courses at Port Royal, Barony begins and ends at the club's beautiful Antebellum-style clubhouse.

From the tee, many of the holes on Barony appear to be relatively open. But as you approach the green the real challenge of the course becomes clear. The greens are small and protected by deep bunkers and Bermuda rough, demanding an excellent touch with the medium and short irons. This is a course where accuracy, not length is the key factor.

Turtle pace of play.

Started nearly 30 minutes late and took almost 3 hours to play 9 holes. Pace of play was horrendous. Course was fine. Not much character to the holes. Ended up leaving after 9 holes instead of suffering through another 3 hours. Would never pay full price for a round here.

Didn’t get to finish round due to rain but somewhat disappointed with the course conditions..especially the forward tee boxes and fairways. Too high price tag to what we got.

Great course for beginners or advance players.

Friendly staff in Clubhouse, starter and bags. Good supplies in clubhouse. Play went off with well timed starts. Would definitely play here again.

Disappointed

While the greens were in very good condition – the rest of the course leaves a lot to be desired. Very disappointing as I have come to expect far better conditions in any Marriott property. Where is the return on investment with so many people playing and paying such high fees?

Barony

I am spoiled because I play at a nice Country Club when I am back home in Ohio. This is HH however and they do not grow grass as well down here as we do in Ohio so given that I enjoyed playing this course. The fairways were mediocre but the greens were better than many of the resort courses I have played down here. I wish they could get them faster. Pace of play was good. The problem I have is the $160 green fees during prime time. I played around 1 and payed $110 but that was way too high IMO for this quality of course. Perhaps that explains why it was not that crowded.

Lot of sharp dog legs

Ok course. Reminds me of FL. Hard fairways, not much grass. Need hard pan skills.

Too many trees over hitting lanes on some holes.

Fair Course

Golf course was in fair condition and everything about it was fair. We happened to be behind a slow group, but the ranger was very communicative about his remediation efforts. For $170, I guess I expected more than a fair golf course. I'm' glad I played it but I'd like to try other golf courses at Hilton Head next time.

Great back 9

Condition of greens was good, but tee boxes were a little rough and the course was a little dried out. Staff were friendly, amenities were good. Pace of play was pretty slow.

Disappointed in course

When booking this course I debated between Robbers Row and Barony at Port Royal. I reserved for a discounted fee of $75/person which at the time I was pleased with. . My decision was based on reading other reviews .

I thought the conditions were not very good. Fairways were very hard and not terribly grassy. Finally I just adjusted my game and hit clubs that were more suited for hard surfaces , irons, and not woods. The course layout was ok and the back nine probably prettier than the front 9 ( which had half of the holes along the road). Staff was extremely gracious and helpful. Unfortunately we didn’t get to hit balls as they were cleaning the driving range during the hour before our tee time.

I just feel there are too many other courses on Hilton Head than to repeat play at this course.

Overall good experience. Staff were excellent and course condition was good. Fairways were average and greens were very good. Felt price was on the high side for this course but it is Hilton Head in March.
