Brigantine/Clipper at Shipyard Golf Club
About
The Brigantine/Clipper Course at Shipyard Golf Club combines two of the three nine-hole golf courses on the property for one of the more challenging tests on Hilton Head. Brigantine/Clipper has a rating of 73.5, with a slope of 135 from the championship tees.
Designed by Willard Byrd and built in 1982, alligators sun themselves along the scenic, water hazard-filled Brigantine nine holes. With slight doglegs and well-placed bunkers, this golf course requires shot making and a good short game.
With plenty of sand and water hazards, Clipper may be the most difficult of the nines. This George Cobb design requires a good long game and a soft touch around the greens.

Not worth the 85+ to play
The pro shop staff were friendly but the starter and outside staff not so much. Seemed like I was bothering them on this day wanting to play. It is not worth the 85+ to play. Go to the Golden Bear for 55+ for a good round with good pace and staff are extremely sociable!
Course Conditions Need Improvement
The course was not playable by normal standards due to heavy rain several days earlier. The conditions were beyond cart path only rules for the day. The fairways were washed out and there was hardly any grass to hit off of. There was debris, sticks, and thick strands of grass clippings strewn across every fairway. It was difficult to find a spot on the fairways that didn't draw water from your stance. Bunkers we're mostly washed out. Our round took nearly five and a half hours to complete. There was no beverage cart. The course should have been closed until proper maintenance could be completed.
Course has bery narrow fairways with water on all holes. The day we played was cart paths only making play speed extremely slow
We apologize for having to enforce art path only rules due to the recent 3.5" rain fall.
early season?
for cost of round, it was super rushed. Did not expect to be pushed so early in season. We play at a fast pace and players were bearing down. Folks in front of us most likely felt same.. Fairways need attention. Hopefully it’s due to season, but with that said, price should better reflect conditions
We certainly are in our off season right now but we know Spring is just around the corner!
Slow play problem
Followed two threesomes and still had a five hour round. We should have had a ranger to keep things moving. Course was dirty with debris from the trees that should have been cleared.
GOLFERMIKE - We apologize that your round was impacted by slow play and our tree work project. We aim to improve continually improve turf conditions as well as playing characteristics.
Fun and challenging course
Lots of water all over this course. Maybe too much and you may lose a lot of balls. The layout is fun and requires thinking. You won't automatically reach for your driver on every tee shot. A couple par 5s call for a wood or iron from the tee. Interesting to note they don't publish the slope or rating on GolfNow. Course was in good condition, greens have lots of undulations. Please fix your ball marks! The staff was friendly. Lots of wildlife to see out there. I'd definitely play this one again.
Thank you for your insightful comments. We are all about making you think around the course!
Golfer from CT
Unfortunately it was a very wet and windy day, but we knew what we were getting into when we arrived at the course. Layout is great, starter and cart men were very friendly and the Brickyard Pub was excellent. Looking forward to coming back when not so wet.
Look forward to seeing you again on a prettier day!
Professional staff
Nice layout. The staff was as helpful as possible. The grass was still dormant, but I believe that once it warms up, that everything will be fine. The traps were well maintained. Landscaping was being done around the edges of the course, mainly with the overhanging tree branches. This was good.
mschmalhurst - thank you for making taking note that the tree work we are currently in the process of will enhance the turf conditions and playing corridors.
They really keep up on the maintenance to keep the golf course in good shape for its patrons.
Thank you for your nice comments Hondo!
very nice golfing experience
Great and welcoming staff all around. Greens were in excellent shape and nice and quick. The fairways were winter-like, lots of tight lies. Overall in reasonably good shape.
Thank you for your 4 star review. See you again soon!
Dinsdale - we apologize that your round of golf was immediately following 3.5" of rainfall. This, unfortunately, made it impossible for the maintenance crew to complete their normal operations. If these conditions were not to your liking we would be happy to refund any unplayed holes.
