Robber's Row at Port Royal Golf Club
About
A Pete Dye redesign of a George Cobb and Willard Byrd original design helped take the Robber's Row Course at Port Royal Golf Club toward the head of the pack on Hilton Head. Dye added or redesigned 43 bunkers on the front nine, changing par from 35 to 36 and did some shortening on the back nine to change par from 37 to 36.
The golf course plays little more than 6,000 yards, with a somewhat-friendly 124 slope rating from the tips. Players will have to do some work on their approach shots, as the Cobb/Dye design keeps its greens well protected with bunkers.
The golf course is a scenic delight, however, and in a nice move, you get history lessons at the tee boxes to help let you know the past of the area you are playing, which was once an important location in the Civil War.

Robbers Row and Barony
We were scheduled for RRbut starter mentioned the greens had just been aerated. He said we could go off in Barony. Nice course, wide fairways, small greens. We were behind 4 young guys, 2 of which had clearly never played so it was really slow. They had to wait at times also. Ranger came by and was apologetic but said there were people on every hole.
Finally passed them in 7. Started back but there were 3 groups on 11. Ranger came by and said RR was pretty empty so we could head over there and play as many holes as we liked. We played the front nine, similarly nice course except for the aerated greens. Courses pretty open in HH in the afternoon due to the heat.
Nice courses, nice people.
Only exception is the woman in the pro shop who seems to think she owns the place. Very efficient but robotic. Talks about “my staff”. We left something in the cart, called and someone nicely said he had it and would put in room in the pro shop. Of course she said nothing could be there, but cart guys ( “my” staff) didn’t have it. Back to pro shop where she insisted it wasn’t there, but took my name. Meanwhile here assistant took a second, looked in back room and found it. Front desk queen said there needs to be better communication. Yikes.
It would have been helpful if we would have known that the greens had just been aereated. Not a good putting surface.
No Robbery Here
A very playable course of the Low Country fashion. Lots of sand, water, trees, etc. All in great shape, except the greens were slow. Course does not start near the clubhouse or return after 9 so stock up. Interesting historical markers around the course. Learned "Robber's Row" was unofficial name of the main street thru the Civil War camp there (9, 10 fairways) with various hustlers trying to get into the soldiers' pockets. Great practice area with dual pitching greens. No starter in PM but no worries. *Not sure if he was 'on staff' but a pro (?) acted like the pitching area was his alone. Would play again and recommend.
A must golf
This is a course that will make the lineup on the yearly trip down to Hilton head. Phenomenal shape. Staff was amazing. Even the residents on the course are great.
Great value for the Birdie&Brew price
I thought the course was great for the $75. Some rough patches around the greens, but they seemed to roll true once you were on. Some of the tee boxes were a little patchy, but that to be expected in the middle of July. The starter was helpful, and the guy in the pro shop was great!
I think I would go back for the $75 price but if I had to pay the ~$130 regular price, I would rather go to the Robert Trent Jones or George Fazio course imo… they just are in better condition.
Robbers Row Surprised Me
Half the price of nearby courses, but the fairways and greens were in better shape at Robbers Row. The cart path through winds through numerous live oaks and includes several Civil War historical markers. This is my have to play it again course for Hilton Head Island.
Great course
The layout, conditions, and staff were great! Totally recommend!
Marshall ruined the experience
They stack em up, like most courses, which is expected.
We had 2 foursomes of friends playing back to back. We were held up at the start due to a group earlier arriving late which was no problem for us, we had all day. The valet, pro-shop staff and the starting official had been great. They were very friendly and apologetic for the situation. Behind us there was a group of 3 locals that were very irritated about the late start and they made it known to all.
We stayed right behind the group in front of us as did our friends behind us. Behind then the 3 buddies of the Marshall (the locals) whined constantly and that resulted in us getting harassed for 5 holes for pace. Both our groups finally just sat there and let the locals play thru which only stacked things up worse but at least got the Marshall on the guys that had been in front of us instead. By the end we finished only 4 mins off pace but the rude Marshall harassing us really put a damper on the day.
The 8 of us played Port Royal - Robbers Row the next day...I highly recommend them, it was a much better experience.
4 of us are Country Club members and avid golfers so we get the rules, I say this only to establish that we aren't novice players and we are very aware of course etiquette.
Conditions Lacking
We’ve played this course many times and it has always been a favorite. Still love the layout and the staff, but this year the course conditions were not what you’d expect for a $90+ rate. Many greens with bare spots and turf problems including the collars. Also, other than the clubhouse, didn’t see any water on the course. With high 80’s temperature and high humidity, you’d think there could be a few options to refill other than buying something from the beverage cart. Overall, we felt that Robber’s Row was not what we expected based on past experiences. Hate to see this deterioration since it’s been one of our favorites.
Very nice track
Played other courses in HH. Found Robbers Row to be in the best conditions. Great practice facilty vs other golf courses. Will definitely play again
Great staff and very nice layout
My buddy and I booked this while he was here on vacation. I am a local and have played a lot of courses on the island and in Bluffton and this rates at the top of my list.
