Robber's Row at Port Royal Golf Club

About
A Pete Dye redesign of a George Cobb and Willard Byrd original design helped take the Robber's Row Course at Port Royal Golf Club toward the head of the pack on Hilton Head. Dye added or redesigned 43 bunkers on the front nine, changing par from 35 to 36 and did some shortening on the back nine to change par from 37 to 36.
The golf course plays little more than 6,000 yards, with a somewhat-friendly 124 slope rating from the tips. Players will have to do some work on their approach shots, as the Cobb/Dye design keeps its greens well protected with bunkers.
The golf course is a scenic delight, however, and in a nice move, you get history lessons at the tee boxes to help let you know the past of the area you are playing, which was once an important location in the Civil War.

Typical HH course-with a plus
Having played several HHI courses, this one is on par with the rest. Paid a lot more to play Fazio course and wasnt impressed. Better value here. Free junior golf clubs and free play for my young one had me bringing my other kids back to play here on consecutive days. Also-one of these days the pace was awful due to a tournament and the pga pro came and got us and placed us on the open course Robber’s Row. I liked this layout very much but Barony was nice as well.
Highly recommend this course
I highly recommend this course. The fairways and greens were in excellent condition and the staff is very friendly. Gary.
Good course
The staff were wonderful. The amenities included were second to none. The course was average condition. Greens were on the small side, grass coverage was ok, greens were of a mixed grass blend. The cart paths were very good and concrete. Facilities were in great shape. The fairways showed signs of excessive watering on the course we played. The bunkers were in great shape.
Great value at better venue
Lots of history among tee boxes. They really pack players onto course but overall pace was ok. I will definitely play again on next trip.
Course was healing from aeration, would love to see it at its BEST.
Great day
The course is in good course. Greens were aerated recently…but hit it firm!
Robber’s Row
Nice Club in Port Royal Plantation on Hilton Head. Typically this is nice course. The Layout of the fairways are generous but each hole offers some kind of challenge verse reward. The. Club House is nice and the staff friendly. My biggest cripe this round is that we were never told that the course was just aerated - fairways and greens- totally impacting play- to top it off they even turned the sprinklers on while player were still trying to complete there rounds. :( even when we waited the course was too wet to play some holes. Very sad. Otherwise - despite a less that great expedience this time out we still enjoyed this course.
Great course!
This course was challenging but fun! It was in great shape, everyone was friendly and staff very courteous and helpful.
Disappointing Experience
I try to give grace most of the time and not be a keyboard complainer, but today's experience was just bad enough to allow it.
Played @portroyalgolfclub today and it went like this: No range balls. The starter said "I think someone is out there picking them", but no. A few balls scattered out on the range, so unless they only have a few hundred balls, they should not have been out. Saw the beverage cart lady at hole 3, but since we were a little bit behind already I said "I'll pick something up here in a little bit when I see you again". I never saw her or anyone else with a beverage cart ever again. At hole 11, a staff member was out and I asked him if he could send the beverage cart our way, we were quite thirsty. (Keep in mind there are no water stations on this course, and no halfway house, so once you go out you're out until you get back to the clubhouse.) He said he would send someone our way. We never saw anyone. Teeing off on hole 17 here came another staff member. I stopped him and asked him why we had not seen the cart girl we were very thirsty. He said "she had an emergency and had to go home". My main complaint about all of this is that on that course with no water stations The beverage cart should be a priority for this the staff. That was the second staff member that I had seen driving around and they can't drive a beverage cart? And at a resort course like this, why do they not stock the cooler on the cart with waters at least? There are too many good choices of golf on Hilton Head Island, and too many better choices that will treat you like it's a resort course and take care of the customers on the course at this price point. I was dehydrated and angry by the time I finished the round. I encourage anyone coming to Hilton Head Island to play golf to look at all of the other better choices first, but this will be the last time I play Port Royal.
Unfriendly place
Restaurant was great, food was very good and friendly servers. Unfortunately it stopped there, every other golf course staff member was rude or looked like they were annoyed you were there. Course was in average condition and we were glad we didn't play in the morning at ridiculous rates for the experience. The Port Royal courses are not worth the money, much better options in the area.
Great people
GolfNow website scheduled me for Thursday when I had booked for Friday. Got charged twice for one expensive round of golf.
A great afternoon at Robbers
The highlights:
- Staff was SUPER friendly
- Greens were excellent and the highlight of the course
- Layout is challenging but not unforgiving.
- New carts are comfortable
- Lots of facilities out on the course
- 36 holes tee of from the same clubhouse
- Incredible practice facilities
Needs a little work:
- Fairways are not quite there yet
- Would appreciate GPS for the price
- Pace of play is slow but they do have Marshalls.
- Only have one bev cart for 36 holes.
Overall a great afternoon. Would play again
Course in rough shape, starters far from HHI charm
Our foursome booked a tee time for 18 on golfnow just after 4:20pm. We loaded our carts are were told by starters/cart guys we were not going to play 18 in time (we did with plenty of time to spare, well before cart return time)… they were seemingly mad that we even showed up.
I’ve played this course multiple times and this is the worst shape it has ever been in. Greens patchy, rough and fairway are indistinguishable in many spots - a shame for a pretty nice layout. It’s going to be a rough summer here if it’s looking like this in April.
Fix your course, get some employees that enjoy being at a golf course, and don’t advertise and charge for 18 at 4pm if your staff is going to disapprove.
Spend your $$ elsewhere.
