While Hilton Head is chock full of courses designed by some of the greatest names in golf, just one of them was designed with a computer to give it lines straighter than an arrow throughout.
The Robert Cupp Course at Palmetto Hall can be one of the most interesting and eclectic courses you'll play, as well as possibly one of the toughest. From the back tees the course plays to 7,079, with a slope rating of 144.
Named as Golf World's top designer in 1992, Cupp created a course that is visually challenging as well as challenging to play. With sand traps looking as if they were drawn in by, well, a computer, this is a course you'll tell your friends about, though you may not tell them your score.

Cupp review
Second time playing the Cupp course. Got right off on tee time but front nine was backed up and waited every shot played in 2 hours 10 minutes. 3 some in front of us quit after 9 which gave us some spacing and completed the back in 1 hour 50 minutes for a four hour round. Course was in good shape and greens were smooth, green and fast. Some work on the course such as hole 3 reduced to a par 3 due to cart path rehab and several holes had new sod which should be great when it grows in. Course conditions were fine no complaints. Cupp is a nice track and worth playing. We will come back.
Great Course
Greens immaculate! Course layout challenging that made it enjoyable.
Poor Course conditions
Tee boxes & fairways were in poor/fair condition. Greens were good.
No grass growing yet
Course overpriced for this time of year. Especially since grass not yet gowing on the fairways. Very tight lies! .
Found a local coupon for $45. Pro shop would not honor saying course now managed by new owners. Coupon had no expiration date nor did it identify any limitations. Don’t feel their stance was appropriate. Will be looking for courses to play.

This place has changed quite a bit. Staff friendliness, Pro Shop assortment, course conditions (especially the greens) were noticeably elevated from last year. Pace of play was very slow but that’s because of a tournament and course popularity. Staff knew before we checked in that pace would be slow and without being prompted made moves to please us which were totally unexpected. We have always thought this place was 5 star potential but now they are really working to live up to it.
Numerous Ongoing Improvements
Hip hip hooray. The Cupp course is undergoing several types of improvements that will not only improve the aesthetics of the course but also the playability. What I did not like about the course is that a number of the greens have severe slopes that effectively reduce the playing area of the already smallish greens. The fairways were very thin and although I am a strong opponent of overseeing I am a firm believer in maintaining thick fairways so that the dormant grass does not result in bare fairways. Maybe with the improvements Cupp is on a path to revitalize their fairways and thicken the natural grass during the growing season. With that improvement and the expansion/elimination of some of the severe sloping/drop offs, Cupp will become a 4.5 course again.
This golf course is in fine shape for winter time play greens are in very very good condition and are quick layout of the entire course is tough but not extremely difficult I highly recommend playing this course while on the island of Hilton Head
Getting Better
Thanks for improving the course with so much work being done on bunkers and resided areas this will make the course great later this year. The front nine was in better shape than the back none where the fairways were very, very thin. I love the layout, would never get tied of all the challenging holes. Hope all the renovations go well. Nice people, nice place
Wow!
Hope your golf balls aren’t hydrophobic. There is a lot of water with greens tucked in and around the ponds. Greens were really fast with minute undulations that were tough to read. Very nice layout and great conditions of the course for January golf! Go play it!
Not good.
This course is under renovation and should not have been promoted. Waste of my money.
