Don’t do it - even on the sunniest day..
Let me start off with the positives. It’s a golf course with a $25 hot deal for 18 holes w/ cart that was open on a day everyone thought it was going to rain; instead the sun out and then rain delayed itself to the evening. The tee boxes need a lot of work; 12 / 18 holes were pretty much sandboxes. Fairways were narrow and the ball would roll as it were on pavement (grass was dry/dead). Greens still had irrigation holes and cup pins were held together by duct tape. This course is a ball eater. While I wouldn’t recommend a friend play here, if you want to get familiar with the game without the pressure of knowing proper ‘golf etiquette’ this is a good course to try..
p.s.: they don’t have a full range. Irons only/ no driver.
Horrible conditions
The course is in horrible condition. Many tee boxes have no grass, just hard packed sand/dirt. Greens very inconsistently prepared with some lightening fast and others shaggy. Driving range is horrible and irons only. Do not play here.
Early Season Montclair
It was my first time playing here and it's way too early to tell what the conditions will be during mid summer but the fairways were in the same condition as other courses in the area this time of year. Greens were in good shape and the layout was quite challenging. Narrow fairways, elevation change, and the shape of holes made course management more important than any course I've played. Probably not a walkable course due to weaving in around the neighborhood and having to drive a good distance between some holes.
Nice Layout, Great Price
A nice course with a challenging layout. Troublesome if you can't keep it straight off the tee. Could use a little better upkeep overall but good value for a round of golf.
Pleased by Conditions
Golf course was in supriseing good condition especially for the time of the year. Tee boxes weak but the fairways and greens were very playable. Got a great deal through golfnow so would recommend giving it try.
Better than I remember
I hadn't played here in several years , but was pleasantly surprised. It is a very tight golf course with lots of nearby houses. As long as you hit them straight you will enjoy your round. Greens rolled well with only a few blemishes. I will be back to give it another try.
Much Improved
I’ve been very critical of the course conditions in the past, to the point of saying I’ll never play Montclair again. I was impressed over the improvements to greens, areas around the greens, fairways, and yes, the tee boxes. Bunkers now have sand in them, golfers just need to rake them after their bunker play! Kudos to the staff and maintenance folks, as well as the community for taking pride in the golf course. I could also tell the course had improved by the number of golfers at the course. I decided to give it another try after reading recent reviews. Great job!
Tight course
The course is very tight, if you can play well here then you can play well anywhere. It’s not bad for the price of playing.
Challenging course
Leaves mad it hard to find balls. We will return in the spring to re play this nicely laid out course
Montclaire Playing well right now
Overall, course condition is pretty good right now. Lots of leaves on the course, play old balls, will get lost even in plain sight.
Greens need a little bit of repair but 17 of the 18 were rolling pretty fairly.
