Editor's Note: Course closed for businss in 2022.

This is the kind of place the locals actually play. The kind of place that offers regular Sunday champagne brunches and New Year's Eve parties in the clubhouse. Mesquite's low green fees bring them in (under $100 even in Palm Springs' ultra expensive peak season). Its mountain backgrounds and golf along the bottom of a streambed are what bring them back.

Mesquite Golf and Country Club in Palm Springs isn't a long course by any stretch of today's standards. It comes in at 6,312 yards from the back tees. Locals find that fits just right. Again, it's Palm Springs. Many of the locals are cashing retirement checks between drives. A little shorter does not necessarily mean uninteresting though.

There are eight small lakes out on Mesquite and when the water's running in the stream it plays with some kick. At the same time, it's very friendly to women, seniors, anyone who finds distance to be a challenge. The 366-yard par-4 ninth is illustrative of a course that regularly lets average hackers go for the green.

Disappointment to say the least

My understanding was this was a long standing well respected golf course, but apparently things have changed dramatically. The course is in terrible condition and the club does not offer much in the way of F&B. I can understand issues with repairs required due to the floods, but the condition of the fairways, tee boxes and greens were terrible. My husband used the phrase 'goat track' to describe it. If someone was in the market for pet gophers, this is the place to secure them. The pace was painfully slow and there were too many temporary greens and tee boxes. It may have been helpful if the staff noted this prior to teeing off. It was also a shock when they charged us for balls to warm up on the range.

Course offers great value

Mesquite could get higher greens fees if they spiffed it up a bit and offered a place for a cold beer when you finish.

Not ready for play!!

Mesquite wasn’t quite what I was looking for in a Palm Springs type course! To start, the sprinkler system wasn’t shut off on the first hole so we had to tee off 45 yards ahead of the tee. Then the fairways and greens were so out of shape, we had to settle for a two putt on every hole! Then I found out there was a mass flood that wiped out the course which caused it’s closure to be fair about it!! However, they should’ve stayed closed for at least another month to let the moisture and fairways resolve themselves!! Overall, I don’t think I would recommend it for now!! Golfer beware call ahead and see what the conditions are before you book your round.

Course challenges but still good

Given the price and challenges the course has faced we had a great time. It’s certainly not in tip top shape. The clubhouse it’s quiet but really a beautiful building. Sounds like floods last year devastated many of the bridges. There were several holes that were revised and look under repair or temporary. Given all that we were pleased with the experience and outside staff were friendly and helpful.

Needs some work

Course definitely needs some work still. Greens are very bumpy/sandy and REALLY slow. Should probably be charging $15 instead of $35, but finished our round in 3 hours.

Mesquite Golf Club has seen much better days

While the price might be right and the friendliness and efficiency of the staff noteworthy, there is little else to recommend this course.

Tee boxes = uneven and missing on some holes

Fairways = rough

Greens = patchy and poorly maintained

Construction or closed potions of several holes have compromised this course, on the back 9 in particular with 5 of the 9 holes being adversely affected.

Don’t waste your money

Course getting worse every year.

Greens rough bumpy and slow.

Fairways patchy.

Water hazards dried up only one left.

Flood damage from a year ago has not been fixed. Making back nine shorter and dangerous.

Course still recovering from Monster flood in February

Course gradually recovering from disasterous flood in February 2019. Condition recovering and improving every day as weather has been great for the local courses. Good value compared to many courses that have become very pricey. Match your game to a course that suits it.

Bad/poor conditions

The course has had some problems lately due to rainstorm last year. That does not mean that when you check in, the people avoid to tell that they have changed the course last three holes totaly...MEANIG: Hole 16 is now 18...17 is now a par 3 instead of par 4 etc,,,,, Make a lot of confusion.... They have put info about this on the scorecard....well scorecard....a sheet of paper.... No one tells that before you go on the course.... Have played this course as long as i have been visiting Palm Springs....12 years...never experienced something like this before....AND....whe they t ry to charge people up to 60 $ for a round i would call that a RIP OFF.......Am not HAPPY....

Disaster

The course took a beating last February during the huge rain/ flood. It has not been put back together yet. The wash was washed out. Bridges destroyed resulting in the back nine being shortened. The playing price has been adjusted from the normal fee I will add, but even with that, the holes that were not so affected have slow and bumpy greens. Overgrown tee boxes. The sand was nicely raked and the fairways were fine. Don't expect much playing here. Its a shame the storm took so much from this course, it was always one of my favorites to start my week with.

Shouldn’t be open.

Looks like they weren’t going to open Course this year, being that 2 months ago it was bone dry from not being watered all summer.

Then they decided to throw a minimum of money at it.

The greens are horrible and actually have seed all over them.

The Course still haven’t been repaired from February’s flooding and still have temporary tee boxes and greens. Should have cost $20.
