Rancho Mirage Country Club
About
This course sits at the intersection of two of the most famous roads in Palm Springs: Bob Hope Drive and Frank Sinatra Drive. Yet, it's one of the better kept secrets in the golf scene. Rancho Mirage Country Club in Ranch Mirage is a semi-private club available to outside play through stay & play packages so it does not do a lot of publicity.
There are 10 lakes, tons of palm trees and the snow-capped San Jacinto Mountains to catch your eyes. The course itself is largely flat and inviting for the average hacker. It measures only 6,111 yards from the back tees. But its 122-slope rating is a little deceivingly given how small many of the greens are. It still takes good shots to post a good number at Rancho Mirage.
There are also lighted tennis courts at the complex, allowing golfers to make a day & night of it, if they wish.

Nice golf course
We went a little late to our starting time, but there was no one around, so they allowed us to warm out. My wife and I had no one in front or behind us, so we finish in 3.5 hours. That's rather good since my wife plays infrequently.
The course isn't difficult, it's pretty straight forward, and not too difficult.
Played in very mild rain alone with zero people on course
It was raining on and off very mildly, so the course was empty and wide open. But it's very well designed. Specifically, it first rewards people who have a fade or slice before they next get hit with a subsequent hole that will penalize anyone who fades or slices to severly.
For example, hole 16 requires a mild fade to remain in the fairway, whereas if you fade or slice the ball to much on hole 17, you're in the water. Then, on hole 18, you can fade or slice the ball to stay on the right side of the water, which then requires you to accurately land the ball on the green over the water. Otherwise, if you draw or hook the ball to much off the tee, you're in the trees on the left. So as always in this sport, proper ball placement off the tee is critical in order to be successful on over half the holes.
The course is laid out in this fashion with somewhat of a reward, and then penalty, type format for people who fade or slice to much. As I recall, hole 10 requires a monster slice to round the corner, but the tall trees on the right will also kill you if you slice the ball to much. So it's a very difficult par 4 given the fact you must execute a near perfect draw to get around the corner while also achieving adequate distance off the tee to reach the green with your second shot.
Otherwise, the remaining holes are quite forgiving and you can avoid any serious consequences from an errant tee shot. They also bunker the greens pretty well, so again....proper distance and accuracy to the greens are key.
Anyway, due to the weather (very sporatic light rain), I played the first round in 90 minutes, and then simply repeated the course immediately thereafter. Playing an entire course solo was actually a lot of fun. Three hours, and 36 holes later, I was back on the road. So it was a great course for a very fair price.
I definitely recommend this well groomed and maintained course, although the greens were very slow. That may have been due to the rain, but still...you had to give the ball a good whack to get it rolling long putting distances. My wife would have loved this course since it's also contained within very beautiful scenery, with lots of ducks and other water fowl. So if your partner gets tired or gives up, they can always look at the wildlife!!!
Great value and condition.
This course is in great condition and is and interesting test of golf for all levels. I would highly recommend a visit to Ranch Mirage.
Old School Track
I don't know how old this course is but you sure can fell the old PS vibe when you get here. Everything is right at the club house...the putting green is right over there and the driving range is just a little that other way.
The fairways are in great shape and very narrow. Part of the old school charm. The houses in the complex are right there, adding to the feel. Some very strange shaped holes, especially the 310 yard par 4 that bends sharply to the right. Hit a good straight drive and you end up on Bob Hope Blvd. So if you slice, don't fix it for this hole.
We tee'd it up at 6:30 on a Friday and didn't see another group until we finished, 3.5 hours later---the way a round of golf shold be played. Unhurried and at a great pace.
Love it all--even the breakfast burrito.
Only two complaints and the reason I didn't give it 5 stars...the day we played, the greens were extremely slow. It had rained a few days before and they hadn't got around to mowing them. So I'll give them that. BUT the sand traps had no sand. Just dirt. Hard packed dirt. Played SilverRock the day before, with its' fantastic traps so this was a let down. Fortunately, I was only in one trap all day, but it was a pain to manuever.
This course is in poor condition and staff are non responsive.
The course is in terrible shape and staff were very unfriendly. We played behind two fivesomes and when we complained we were told by the proshop that they were members. I won't play this course again.
Very slow play, course in OK condition
The Marshall didn't keep the slow play moving along. The greens where extremely slow.
This is a fabulous course. Very picturesque with forgiving fairways.
You will love this course. It is challenging enough, yet forgiving. Very picturesque!
Beautiful club, layback staffs, fun to play, greens needs work.
Teed off early. No problem with pace of play. Course in great condition except greens. I suppose still letting the winter grass to grow in therefore the green speed is unpredictable and slow. Bunkers could use another layer of sand or a dose of good tilting--many hard packed bald spots.
Fun course!
Experience started when I pulled up and clubs were wisked onto a cart for us. Friendly staff and a challenging but doable course. Lost a few balls......
Good value for the cost and friendly staff
We liked the course, good desert resort layout and fun for both my wife and me. The staff was very friendly and helpful in getting us started on time and through the douse as we played.
Great Value
A very interesting Par-70 layout with four Par-3's and two short Par-5's. I liked the Par-3's at 91, 100, 133 and 164 yards. The Par-5's at just 478 and 471 yards are tempting targets for players who want a chance at an albatross or an eagle.
I played twice in a three day span. I signed up for the first twilight time and was surprised the staff sent me out when I arrived. I played the first 13 holes by myself with no one in sight in 80 minutes. When I caught up to the early traffic on #14 the pace slowed to normal. I finished in 2 and a half hours and thoroughly enjoyed playing at my own pace with no one behind me.
The course has water on nine holes and a wide variety of bunkers with a course heavy sand I found more difficult than the sand I play back in Minnesota.
I am playing there again today and will likely play there 3-5 more times this vacation.
Great Disappointment
We were very excited to play Rancho Mirage. At this point it had been open for two days after overseeding. We recognized this fact but were extremely diappointed in the course condition. We played at 6:52 and the starter was not there. The fairways had not been manicured. They were long, but we attributed this to the overseeding. The greens were very slow. It was like putting on a shag carpet. Altholugh we understand that course conditions were not optimal because of the time of year, we felt that to extend green fee play at $75 for this course was a travesty. We shoud have quit after 9 and asked for our money back. On the positive side, we found the course layout to be interesting and a test of golf. We would recommend caution when booking a time at this course. We found much better for less money.
A bit gimicky. The 6100 yards feels like 7000 as there are some long par 4's
Aesthetically, the course is pleasing, but it would play better as a par 71 instead of a par 70 for members and tourists. Hole # 16 should be a short par five instead of 469 par four. As a par five it would promote accuracy off the tee instead of length. The fairway is narrow and dog legs to the right, so a big drive and a fade is required, unfortunately to the detriment of the homes that line the entire fairway on the right side. Also holes # 10 and # 2 are questionable in design and playability.
We also discovered that breaking back to the clubhouse after the 9th hole for a hot meal is not recommended as it took 20 minutes to make up two hot dogs and a couple of sandwiches. This put us two groups behind when we arrived back at the 10th hole. Your alternative is to purchase all your food from the cart only.
Last resort course
Grass was dry, Tee boxes in good shape, Fast greens, Bunkers like concrete! Would not pay premiums to play this course.
nice residential course
Nice Cource for the money. Played in the summer when prices were down. Lots of Shade trees, which is nice.
had a great time.
summertime rates which was great, but also summertime conditions, but the course wasn't too bad. i cant wait to go there in the winter time to see what its like. great price and employees.
