Challenging course but in the middle of renovations
Staff was super friendly. Our foursome caught up to the foursome head of us by hole 10 through 16 slow play They quit after #16.. it happens, but still frustrating. This course (as we were warned by starter;) is under major overhaul. My personal opinion, they should shut the course down until course is complete. They are cutting down possibly 100 pine trees to redo fairways and greens. They were running a trencher sometimes down the middle of a fairway (for irrigation) with mounds of dirt along the way.. The greens need work, but just about all courses we've played this Winter are having problems after the snow in January. I would recommend to a friend after renovations are complete.
Would have been nice to know that they were installing waterlines and sprinkler heads everywhere. Also Alll the greens had poa annua weeds so you couldn't get a clean bounceless putt. I'm sure once they finish with the installation the course will be very good.
Mixed feelings
This was my first time playing a MB course in winter so maybe my expectations were too high. However I found more cons than pros here. Staff was friendly, but maybe a bit too talkative, as I found myself waiting several minutes to check in and get my cart while they blathered on with someone. Grass on the driving range was tough to find and the balls were ancient. I liked the course layout overall, but there were a couple of annoyingly wonky holes. Grass on the fairways green but very thin. The greens were super bumpy. They also have an irrigation project going on with things torn up on nearly every hole, but that didn’t really impact play too much. The best pro was the price, only $33 with a Hot Deal on GolfNow.
This course is under going major repairs
New sprinkler system is being installed, so fairways and green side areas are dug up.
Green were in poor shape, lots of dormant grass making them inconsistent and bumpy.
Trip haven't been racked in weeks.
Lots of tree removal going on.
This course is fun to play
We have played this course several times over the years and have always enjoyed the experience. On this occasion we started on the back nine and all was good. When we made the turn however we were very disappointed by the condition of the greens as it was impossible to get a good roll without having the putt bounce over sparse and uneven surfaces. Regardless we enjoyed Whispering Pines and hopefully the condition of the greens is temporary and will improve soon.
Should be a nice tract when the work is done
The course is undergoing some major work. Several trees have been cut down, several of the fairways on the back 9 have ditch scars and broken sod, and a few workers and machinery are present. I think this should have been disclosed to me before I committed to the reservation. And, I would think the green fees should be reduced as well. Finally, the greens were covered with poa annua grass.
Everything Under Repair
They should feel bad not letting us know everything is under repair and nothing wb fixed until late summer?
Whispering Pines
Course layout is very good however greens weren’t in very good shape.
Ruff greens
Most greens are very thin of grass, where crab grass is more relevant. Not the best condition for smooth putting.
One of our favorites
We play Whispering Pines often when in Myrtle Beach. Greens are not in the best of shape but I understand major work is being done over the summer. Look forward to seeing the completed work next year.
A quirky course. Lots of holes take driver out of your hands. Course knowledge is really important. But it’s fun and challenging. Really close to the airport so could be good for first or last round of the trip.
