Forest Green
Course overall needs work on the fairways grass cut to low it seems
Quite Nice!
I enjoyed our round today at the Tourney we played. I found the greens and fairways to be in great shape - I would play here again in a heartbeat.
Thanks for the endorsement! Glad you had a great time at Forest Greens. See you soon.
Forest Greens
The course was generally in good condition it rained very heavily the night before and the course handled pretty well. The cart path was probably the worst of the course. Between the rough condition of the blacktop and the mud/dirt...the golf path needs most of the attention from the staff.
The couse has a hand full of blind tee shots which if u haven't played the course before makes it some what difficult. Greens and tees were in great shape, even after a couple of inches of rain. All in all a good course to play
Thanks for playing Forest Greens and passing on your comments. Glad you enjoyed the round, despite the wet conditions.
We are working on the areas off the cart paths. Much more to do, as you noted. We will also start doing some cart path repairs in the near future.
Thanks again and hope to see you at the course again soon.
Must Play!!!!
This course always has their tee times start on time, almost always less than a 4.5 hour 18 hole round. If you are in the area this is a must play.
Thanks for the great review! We are glad you enjoy playing at Forest Greens and appreciate the kind words.
Fairways are horrible
Nice layout, but fairways don't have any grass at all. Mostly dirt. Greens will be fine once temperature warms up to help overcome aeration. But I repeat, the fairways are totally unacceptable. I have played other courses with dormant bent grass but this is not dormant, it is non existent.
Thanks for playing Forest Greens and thanks for the review. The fairways are certainly not where we would like them to be. Unfortunately, with the cold, late spring, the Bermuda grass has been slow to start growing. We currently have decent turf coverage on the fairways, estimated to be around 90%. In the areas that are bare, grass is starting to grow. Believe it or not, based on history, the bare areas will be mostly filled in within 2-3 weeks now that warm weather has arrived. We hope you'll come back then to give us another try. Thanks again.
Great Round!
We had beautiful weather. The course is in reasonable shape following a hard winter and late spring. There were many other foursomes wanting to play and so the course was crowded. Pace of play was slow, but the marshals kept things moving. Too many people playing from the long tees when they should have been playing from the white or gold tees..
Thanks for the favorable comments. Glad to hear the marshal was helpful in keeping things moving along on a busy day. Now, if we could just convince everyone to play from the proper tees. See you soon.
Tight Fairways
Somewhat challenging course with plenty of hills and tight fairways. It seemed like at least half of the holes were either 20-30 feet higher or lower than where I would have my approach shot. Very hard fairways which makes the ball roll forever. Played in late spring and fairways where very brown with a lot of dirt spots.
Good Morning. Thanks for playing Forest Greens and thanks for the review. With the cold spring, our Bermuda grass fairways have been slow to come out of dormancy. They are finally starting grow and those bare spots will begin filling in. Hope you will get a chance to come back in a few weeks when the fairways will be much better.
Terrible Condition
I have played this course about 5 times and this was by far the worst condition it has ever been in. The fairways have little if any grass on them. It is like playing off of clay. The rough is incredibly thick.
I would not recommend anyone to play here until they get the course in a decent condition.
My apologies that the course conditions were not what you have come to expect at Forest Greens. Unfortunately, the cool, wet spring has provided excellent growing conditions for the rough and we are fighting to keep up, as most courses in the area are. The same weather has been detrimental to the growth of our Bermuda fairways which need consistent, warm weather to start growing. They will start filling in once the weather warms and we can start our spring treatment program. Thanks for coming out and sharing your comments. We look forward to seeing you again a little later into the season.
Just a tough day in the office
I've played this course two dozen times over the past 10 years or so. It is just a hard round of golf. Each and every one of the holes has something a little "extra" to it that makes it out of the ordinary in terms of toughness. If you can get through this 18 without reaching desperately for a beer, you'll be lucky. I would not say that it is the hardest course that I have ever played, but it's in the top 5. It just keeps you grinding and grinding and grinding for 5 hours. And eventually...you're going to break down. Right about the 15th hole. And you're just going to be glad to finish. The problem with it is that it is not just long, a lot of courses are long. The thing is that all of the holes have some weird funkiness to them which makes them tough AND long.. And in the summer? It gets obscenely hot. A hot, long, tough 18? That's not "recreation" it's self-abuse. This course borders right on self-abuse. Even when it's not that hot. When it *is* hot? It's just ridiculous.
Thanks for playing and posting your comments. We might have to look into a big fan to help keep our golfers cooled off in the summer. Seriously, we sincerely appreciate your patronage and your positive review. Hope to see you again soon.
Gréât mountain course
Course in good condition ( Earlly spring). I love this C. Johnston design. We play it every time we come from south. Not for beginners neither walkers.
Thanks for the review and the loyalty. It will be in even better shape on your way back north. Nice to see the grass finally starting to green up.
Course needs some warm weather and TLT.
Good test of your skills. Several good par 4 and 5s. Fairways still brown and thin. Greens better. Bunkers need work and better sand.
Couldn't have said it better myself. A very good challenge with a nice variety of holes. Conditions are much better now than when you played and they will just keep getting better every day from here. Thanks!
Thanks for playing Forest Greens and for sharing your review. Just wanted to point out that our fairways are Bermuda grass so they will green up later than most of the other area courses that have cool season grasses such as bent or bluegrass. Valid comments regarding the bunkers. We'll keep working on them throughout the season. Wish we could renovate them all at once but that's a huge expense that we can't work into the budget at this time. Thanks again for playing. Look forward to seeing you again soon.
great course
The course was wet, due to circumstances. You can tell it drains well. Greens were great, I rated the food, but they weren't open do to the weather. I guess they didn't anticipate the turn they actually had. I'm a 3yr experience guy. Made me think, had to spots,so pretty challenging to me. I shot 103. Only flaw I seen was the amount of range balls you get for a large purchase. Me and two other played in Petersburg last weekend and got about 90 balls on a large purchase, here it was about 30-40. Comeon guys, tthey're recyclable. You're gona make your money. Give up more balls so your guest can enjoy the range. Thank you for the nice round.
Thanks for the favorable comments. Glad you enjoyed the experience. A large bucket is 2 tokens. It sounds like you may have only received 1. If so, please let me know.
Thanks!
Somewhat dissapointed!!
Arrived to find a frost delay. Would have liked a notification on my phone. No range balls were available, not picked the night before, and no coffee!!!! Should have been more organized. Guy in clubhouse did manage to get a bucket of balls after I complained, I think he picked them by hand :( Girl working in the restaurant had not worked in 4 months and they left her with no coffee??????? Not fair to shoot the messengers. Found out that the pro shop guy was filling in! Not their fault at all ! For $180 dollars, get your act together Forest Greens!!!
Thanks for the review. Valid comments and we are working on improving. I am confident that we will meet or exceed your expectations the next time you come out to play.
Good track but pace of play terrible
I used to play here a decade ago in high school but rarely go now due to such bad traffic on 95N & S 7 days a week. Went this week there was a frost delay so we got pushed back an hour. Once we started, we waited 3-7 minutes per shot on every hole. There was no visible Marshall and the pace just got to be too much. Four hours and 9 holes later we threw in the towel and the staff happily gave us a rain check.
Pros: Challenging terrain and layout, course was in good condition for December.
Cons: I experienced an extremely slow pace of play which was very frustrating. There was no one in the café in the am or even at the turn. Staff was professional and pleasant.
Mr. Rosenberg,
Thank you for playing Forest Greens last week. We appreciate your feedback on your round as it helps us improve our service to you and our guests in the future. The weather hasn’t been kind to us and rain last the week caused us to follow the cart path only policy. Unfortunately, that often has an impact on the pace of play which you experienced. We will work better to redirect staff to accommodate the busier days. Please feel free to share additional feedback at info@forestgreensgolf.com
We hope to see you in the near future on the links!
Cheers,
Tom Coffman
General Manager
This Time Better Than Last
The fairways are manicured yet dry - the greens and tees are green.
The course is challenging and the fairways tight.
Good course, can be challenging!
Play the right tees for your skill! Missing fairways on this course will prove to be a CHALLENGING 18 holes!
Some fairways have hard surface. Couple blindshots. Overall good course. Find a good deal to play it.
Value Golf
Can't beat this course for the price. Got it as a Hot Deal and was not disappointed.
The most challenging thing about this course would have to be the greens. All the pin locations seemed to be on the side of a slope.
Course lay out is Good but green speed is too late
Course lay out is good but greens are too long glasses.
Aeration Blows Round
First time at Forest Greens this year. One of my favorite courses, with some of my favorites holes in NVA. Stop going as often a couple of years ago because of the often horrible traffic between home (Alexandria) and the course. Was looking for something different and decided to give it another go. Entire group arrived early, easy Golfnow reserved transaction in the Pro Shop, and we're on the tee box about 20 minutes early. From tee to green, course is in great shape, but that's where the problem starts. I guess they're on a different schedule for aerating greens. Most courses I play aerated weeks ago and the greens have healed. No so at Forest Greens. My group essentially conceded every putt within five feet, it was so bumpy. Otherwise, enjoy the great layout and conditions of the course. We had a good time.
Thanks for playing Forest Greens and passing along your comments. We have Bermuda grass fairways. The grass just started growing a couple of weeks ago when the nighttime temperatures finally got up to 55 degrees. The fairways are filling in nicely and have come a long way since the beginning of May. They will just keep getting better over the ensuing weeks. Come back and play us again in a couple of weeks and let us know what you think.
Thanks!
