Hell's Point Golf Club
About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

The greens were in great shape. Photo submitted by wadedaffinee on 07/23/2014
Dry and hard
This is my home course. I play quite often. Greens are in great shape. Bunkers could use a good raking or fresh sand. Fairways are hard as concrete. Tee boxes are in terrible shape.
Ground bees in the sand and hills
Almost every big mound near sand traps had swarming ground bees. Had 2 4 man groups in front of us that wouldn't let us play through. Finished 18 holes in over 5 hours.
Vacation
Course was challenging but fair. Greens were in great shape.
Nice greens!
The greens on this course have improved immensely. The layout has always been my favorite. Only thing I would ask is a little more attention to the sand pits. Some of them were hard as a rock with dirt in them.
Helluva Day at Hells Point
This is not one of my favorite courses in the Virginia Beach area. We've been returning to the area for three decades and have played Hells Point several times. Its big advantage is its proximity to Sandbridge, where we stay. Its disadvantages are its poorly maintained tee boxes and several greens. They cater to regular golfers over annual vacationers, which I can accept. But some flexibility and accommodation would go a long way in attracting repeat golfers. Green fees seemed a bit steep for the area and the course conditions, much better value elsewhere.
Ok course
Used to be my favorite course. It wasn't in very good shape. Tee boxes were in rough shape. Fairways and greens just okay. Just another average resort area course now.
Overall good
Overall I think it was a good course. Biggest thing they really need to work on are the tee boxes. Lumpy uneven and footing not great. Fairways and greens were good
Enjoyed playing this course.
Course was fun and staff were great. Will be playing again while on vacation.
A Very Nice Shore Vacation Course
I recently spent a week at Sandbridge Island VA Beach with my family on vacation , I played Hells Point twice, I found the staff very friendly and helpful -they treated me as a regular player. The course is a traditional old school design with a very fun layout and tree lined fairways. The 17th is a short dog leg right, which is drivable from the whites . It can also play long if you like that but you will be challenged with different tee shots , not just straight as in a links course. I thought the greens were very nice but dont expect that they are rolled like your Sunday private club. This an excellent rural beach course - play it!
Tough course
Live around the corner. Play here a lot. Tough course. Leave your driver at home. Greens were in great shape. Fairways were dry and need to be mowed. Tee boxes were just a mess. Looked like they had not been watered in weeks. Could not find even ground to stand on from all the dead turf. Hard as concrete.
Nice staff but horrible conditions
First thing youll notice is the grass on the tees is super patchy and about 3 inches tall. The fairways are non existent and more like playing in a field. The greens while looking decent are like putting through molasses.
