Hell's Point Golf Club
About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

Awful course!
Top to bottom a horrible experience and a complete rip off.
Looked at the reviews and ratings prior to booking and thought that go $40 it was great deal and I would go play. Upon entering it was readily apparent that this was an older course and had not seen any updating since it was built in 1982. Some 40 years ago. No big deal, I’ve played older courses that were in amazing shape. Not this one. Even the staff was rude, I got checked in, with no Welcome, no intro to the course, no overview of conditions and no indication of who my playing partners were. I was given a coin for the range balls to go warm up and not even told where the range was. Got my bags and my bag and went to check in to get a cart. Again staff was slow and rude and acted as if I was an inconvenience. Normally I don’t care about stuff like this but given the overall experience it. is worth mentioning. Get to the range, oh boy I knew I was in for it. It was essentially weeds and back yard grass loosely roped off. Not maintained at all. Whatever, warm up and go to the first tee. Already a backup. 3 groups stacked on first tee not a good sign. Step to the tee box and again the condition is atrocious, bad patchy grass that has not been mowed or cared for. Tee off and knock a decent drive dead center expecting some roll, it dies. When I get out to my ball I see why. The fairways hasn’t been mowed in weeks. And the crab grass and weeds were awful. My shot into the green was a high wedge and it sat right in its landing spot. Not unusual for me as I generate a fair amount of spin. As I get to the green though it is more of the same. It is spongy and shaggy like carpet. Unbelievably bad conditions. The whole course was like this bunkers were hard packed and holes not smooth cut because they have not been moved.
Long story short I paid $40 to play what felt like an abandoned course. Never again. Do not give them your money or time.
Beach Fun
They had just finished a tournament and there was a lot of Hustle and Bustle but the staff worked hard to get you checked in and on the tee. If you’re looking for a challenge at a good price this course fits the bill!!!
So Much Potential
So I’ll start by saying I loved the layout of the course and the fact it’s not surrounded by houses at every hole. There’s a challenge to each and every hold in pin locations were tricky but not impossible. Fairways were in decent condition for so early in the season and greens played at a good speed. It was a busy morning so pace of play was slow but enjoyable.
Where the club needs to invest time and money are two fold… tee boxes don’t look great at all, and are significantly lacking, and also the cart path should have been re-laid a few years back as well (not to mention the rotted wood bridges over the creek).
Loved the course though, and seriously considering joining up and becoming a regular.
A little tired
I enjoy this course, but like a number of courses in Hampton Roads, it’s not in great shape. It looks tired.
Diamond in the rough
Course is very challenging but very nicely laid out. Tight fairways, water and sand require accuracy. Greens are in nice condition and offer quite a bit of slope and pin placement. Driving range was the only subpar problem. In very poor shape. No grass and doesn't accommodate the golf cart, which means you have to off load your bag and leave a cart somewhere else. The range is also small and doesn't have many hitting spots. Fairways and roughs are in reasonable shape. A cart is necessary because several holes are hundreds of yards apart. In it's day, this course was magnificent. But, for the price to join ($99) and $20 for 18 holes with a cart, it is the best deal in town. May have to raise the rates to make some improvements.
Creative Course Layout
Great layout, friendly staff and beautiful scenery! Amazing golf course!
Greens
While the tee boxes and other areas could use a trim, the greens are in the best shape I’ve ever seen them. I firmly believe that you get the best value for your money here out of any of the local courses.
I can’t believe Rese Jones let’s them still use his name bunkers no sand and overgrown, tee boxes dirt
What a shame how they let this course go!!!
Great layout but a cow pasture!
I play Ledgerock in Reading PA, Rese Jones course immaculate conditions
Wet
Very rare that I play there and it’s not cart path only. Course does not drain well. The greens were being arreated. If we would of known probably would booked elsewhere.
Noah
Great course and incredible value for the price. Carts were good, staff was absolutely outstanding and had a great time!
