Hell's Point Golf Club
About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

This is a nice and challenging course,
This is a nice and challenging course, the pace of play was very slow at first, the pace picked up around the 7th hole. overall the experience was very good
Vacation round
Due to front nine aeration, we played the back nine twice. Greens were slow and needed many ball fixes. Some of the tees boxes were not mowed, but two of the were completely burned out. Fairways were good and it was 90 degrees for carts. Wildlife was present including the ever-present goats. Nice to see on vacation. We had 1018 tee time and there was no food ready at the turn, sort of a disappointment for my kids. Bring a lot of golf balls, because any shot offline was lost. Overall, we will return again.
Fun course, challenging for all levels.
The course was not in the best of conditions. There has been a bit of rain lately and the course was somewhat wet. Tee boxes hadn't been mowed and the greens were slow and fuzzy.
Needs Maintenance
Unfortunately, the course was very wet due to a few days of heavy rain showers which didn’t help the course conditions. Even so there is clearly a lack of maintenance, particularly the tee boxes and greens. The greens had many bare patches although the ball tended to run smoothly for the most. The tee boxes badly need cutting and reseeding. The fairways were in generally good condition, contrary to the poorer condition of the tee boxes and greens.
Even so, this is the second time I’ve played this course and I like the layout so would play again but hopefully they can sort out some better investment in general maintenance.
rough ride around a difficult, choppy course.
The bumps, dips, puddles, and broken cart path was extremely annoying. Takes away from the fun of play. No sand provided on the cart which accounts for so many divots in the fairway. This course forces you to hit straight or lose many balls.
Great course
One of my favorite local courses to play. Staff is always friendly and available. On my most recent adventure, there were a lot of divots on the greens. Grounds have been really soft lately and it shows on he greens. Will be back to play again.
Sandbridge Open
very nice course layout. very wet conditions. greens and tee boxes not cut for obvious reasons. but a good day all around
Fun course
I always enjoy playing Hells Point, it’s a fun track. Course was surprisingly busy for a Saturday evening - I did’t tee off until after 5 pm. A couple of greens are looking a little rough, and it would be great if golfers would repair their pitch marks. Other than that, lots of fun.
Over 5 hrs to play 18 holes
The course much improved…!the pace of play was totally ridiculous over five hours to play 18 holes
Don’t believe everything you hear
Since moving to the area I have heard nothing but good things about this course, upon arrival I can not help but to judge others opinions…the range and the course were the worst I have ever played in the 14 years I have played golf…greens were scorched tee boxes looked more like bunkers and the range was even worse…not to mention the people who were playing ahead of us would spend time fishing in the water hazards instead of actually teeing off…will not spend the money or the time on this course again.
