Hell's Point Golf Club
About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

Needs TLC
Great routing and some difficult holes, but the greens were in terrible xhape. Would not recommend it right now.
Disappointed
Completely disappointed...the course was in terrible shape. From tee to green, there was no part of the course that did not need TLC. I used to be able to count on Hells Point and loved to play there. However, It seems it continues to get worse every time I visit - August 2020 will be the last for a long time. I would not recommend playing anytime soon. The course needs a lot of attention!
Overpriced for Conditions
Greens are in terrible condition throughout the course making it just about unplayable. Fairways were wet, but that was not unexpected due the larger amount of rain in the area lately. Green side bunkers need attention and new sand added,. The layout is very good and presents multiple challenges. This could be a fun course to play if kept in better condition. Not worth the price they are charging to play in its current condition.
Great Layout
This was my first time to this course and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The staff was kind and informative to the unfortunate conditions of the course. It had been weird weather lately, super hot, hurricane, a lot of rain here and there. So I was forewarned to what I was about to play in, which was considerate. The layout was great for a skilled player or not so skilled like myself. The fairways were wet, lost a couple due to my shots plugging and disappearing to who knows where and the greens were dried and crusty in some spots making reads extremely difficult. However, I still had a great time and I look forward to going back when the course is in better shape! Also played with a Hot Deal from GolfNow so I really can’t complain too much!
Perhaps, but maybe not.
This course is a great design and layout. It's got challenging and tight fairways, and you have to put the ball in the right spot for a chance at the green. The problem is that the course is in rough shape. Greens are diseased and spotty. Fairways are roughly mown. It had rained frequently the week before we played and most of the course was quite swampy. Plus, the practice facility was in very poor condition. I look forward to seeing what it looks like in the future.
Get control of your greens
Been a while since they were this bad, plenty of nearby courses offering rollable greens. Even the cut greens we’re lined with grass from not emptying baskets while cutting. Pretty disappointing to never know when the course is playable.
Bad shape
Tee boxes and greens were in terrible shape not worth the money. Greens had a fungus and tee boxes weee bare in spots and over grown in others. Would not play here again
Absolute trash
We played 4 holes and left. This is not a golf course. It’s a dog track. The greens are non existent. They’re not cut, they don’t roll. The tee boxes are not cut. Disappointed that the guy in the pro shop wouldn’t warn us of how bad the course condition was. I’ll never go back. I would be very disappointed if I don’t get refunded
Hellish Point
Absolute dog track. Greens are not cut. Wet. Do not play here
Disappointing conditions
I have been playing Hells Pt for 25+years and this is the poorest condition I have ever seen. Most greens due to heat and lack of care very bumpy and dead. Traps were atrocious. Had to move the ball in the traps to have a shot.
Pace of play well over 4 hours.
I know weather had been tough, but other courses seem to be maintaining their conditions
well.
Again very disappointed. It will take several months, I.e. next spring to bring this course back.
The greens are dead
The greens are dead. The course itself is in decent Shape but the greens are black. So to me, their price needs to come down for such poor conditions.
Don’t waste your time
Loved this course when I played here years ago, but now it’s a dump. Traps unraked, no rakes in trap or on cart, bare spots on greens, a couple of tees had no grass. I was very fed up and only played 9.
Very disappointing
Played here several times back in the early 2000s and was looking forward to returning after a long time. It’s really a dump. A couple of the tees had no grass, nothing but sand; greens very wet but lots of bare patches; some of the traps almost no sand in them; the edges of the sand traps are shaggy and overgrown; the traps don’t appear to have been machine raked in a long time, and I didn’t see a single rake in any trap on the front nine.
Didn’t stick around for the back nine.
Loved it
For my first time playing the course I was pleased with the experience. A challenging course that requires accurate tee shots. The greens were very receptive to wedge shots. I'll be adding to my rotation of courses.
Challenging Course
Great layout and staff! Some Tee Boxes were burned up and a couple greens. Overall enjoyed the course. Some very beautiful holes.
