About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

Great course for price
It was great greens and bunkers are well maintained. We come here several times a year and always come here
Great Layout
This is a fantastic layout, the course conditions however were very poor for this time of year. Fairways were sparse and middle of the fairways resulted in bare lies on almost every hole. Greens rolled decent where they were not rotted but had a lot of turf rot on most greens.
Slow...
My son and I have played here a few times and it is a fun and challenging layout. Today, people were stacked way too close together. It took us almost 5 hours to play the round. We waited on every single tee box sometimes having 3 or 4 groups backed up...it made for a long day. However, the weather was beautiful , the staff was friendly and the course is fun.
Review
The course is as always beautiful. Unfortunately, with all the rain lately, the course is a sopping mess. Greens are soft and hold well. The tee boxes have little grass on them. The fairways are almost grassless. There is almost no rough due to the amount of water from the rains. Love the layout. Will be a better play once it dries out a bit.at this point, don't expect much roll at all. Lots of plugged balls and many "lost" just a couple of feet off the fairways. Could see them in the water that should be the rough.
We also had some goats on the side of o e of the greens. So cool.
Great Escape
Love getting out here and playing. It’s nice and quiet out on the course. Challenging but rewarding course.
Potential
Course had great potential but wasn’t in great shape. Tee boxes were in awful shape. Greens were rough. There are some fun holes but the conditions took away from the course overall.
Hells Point Golf
The course was in below average shape and really wet. Pace of play was slow.
Hopefully it will be better in the summer.
Not bad this time of year
Greens were recently aerated. Tee boxes ok. Fairways ok. About what you expect for this time of year
I love this course. Most holes are away from any houses or streets so it's nice and quiet. Holes are challenging, but not ridiculously difficult. You can choose to play brave over smart and safe, and it won't bite you in the backside. Best Part 3 holes I have ever played. Favorite course in VA Beach by far!
Judge it on Your own
As a "local", H. Point has in my opinion received a lot of unwarranted poor reviews over the past couple of years. Sure it is not in the conditions of when it was voted one of the best new courses in the country, but that was many years ago. This course can be quite challenging if you can't find the fairway off the tee. If you are left or right - you are normally going to be in a swampy mess, but I have no issue with that. What I like about the course is the layout of a few of the holes are unlike any other in the area, which to me makes it more interesting and I don't feel like I'm playing the same type hole over and over. This course is also without homes within the course, so I like that as well. We had the friendly goats on our second hole which has always been fun to see. Yes this course can be wet at times when you don't expect it would be, but I will be back. Enjoy and hit it straight !
