Hell's Point Golf Club
About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

Barry nice course
The only thing... is when u finish playing some stragglers in the parking lot staring at golfers (weird)
Good Course, Conditions could be better
It's a well designed course that is very narrow so unless you hit the ball straight be prepared to take a couple of drops. The pace was okay finishing the round with 3 people in 3:45 but having to wait at times for the group in front of us. The greens were a bit slow and a lot of people failed to repair their divots. The rough was uneven but the sands were all nicely groomed.
very nice golf course
course in really good shape sometimes hard finding your ball in the rough
Good time
This was a fun place to play. It had something for all levels of experience. It was hot and dry when I played. I did like playing here. Had a good time.
great course - challenging from tee to green
I will definitely return when I'm back in town. My dad and I were well challenged here at HP. The course has narrower fairways with bunkers in tough places. The bunkers in the fairways and near the greens are large and well-placed. There is some real beauty on this course.
We very much enjoyed our round on a hot Monday.
Pro staff
The staff know how to treat their customers refreshing course!
Nice layout
Have played Hells Point for many years. Course is always a little wet. Need to stay in fairway not a lot of room for errors. Greens were nice and green, just rolled way to slow to my liking. I think normal price for weekend rates are a little to high for this course. Thanks golf now.
Like the course
When I will come back on vacation, I will come and there again. My husband and I had fun playing this course.
Start at your tee time, or earlier, or just when ever you want
Tee time was 0930. Starter had everyone starting on hole 9 to give the first 9 a relief from people just playing 9 holes. On the tee box of our first hole. Pair pulls up behind us. I asked what was their tee time and they said 1000. By hole our second hole stuck behind a threesome. By hole four asked threesome if our twosome could play thru. They said a 5 person group ahead of them was holding them thinks up. We drove past a 3 person, 5 person, 2 person, 2 person, 4 person and another 5 person group. Skipped holes 5 thru 9 and moved to the front nine to get a decent pace of play. Starter was present but no control of start times and no marshall controlling on course play. If you play here make sure course times are wide open based on lack of control. I’ve played here several times. I enjoy the course but it was a free for all this last time.
My husband and I really enjoyed the course. The staff was friendl
The day we went it was after it had rained for many days, so some fairways had lots of water, no cars on the fairway
But it was still a great round of golf. We can't wait to play there again tomorrow, and Friday, and I will be able to give you a better view of the course.
We just love golf. Period
Very wet
Course was very wet not my idea for a course this good. Tee box looks bad enough to be a municipal course! Layout was good but condition was dreadful!. I’m from Maryland and the courses drain much better.
Wet fareways
Over all a good round of golf on this challenging course
Decent Course
First time playing this course. The fairways and greens were in decent shape for the dry conditions on most of the holes. There were some areas that there were puddles from the recent weather. There are plenty of sand traps on this course and I found a lot of them. There was a single player ahead of us but he did not invite us to play. This held us up for the majority of the round. There were no rangers out this day. Beverage cart was around plenty of times! I did not see any restrooms on the course. We will try other courses in the area but we will be back to play at Hells Point again.
Greens in fantastic shape
Extremely friendly and accommodating staff. The tee boxes are a little rough. The fairways are in good shape and the greens are tremendous. If you can get out early morning on a nice day there is nothing like it with the tranquility, course layout, and wildlife. I hope they continue to invest in the course and bring it up to as high a standard as possible. I’d definitely recommend to try if you’ve never played before.
Looking forward to my next round.
Great time
With the exception of a few tee boxes needing some grass, the course was in really good shape. Loved seeing the goats on two fairways!
Nice but could be much better!
The layout was nice and the greens were good but the fairways were in bad shape there was little If any fought and the tee boxes barely more than dust. Maybe there was drought conditions or irrigation problems but I thought if the course was better conditioned it could be a gem.
Appropriately named
The course is just now greening up and the fairways are difficult due to so much rain.
The layout is great with water on many holes and drainage ditches along the fairways.
Greens are very difficult to read and putt but they are smooth and challenging. At age 77 and having had three surgeries this winter, I appreciated the seniors tees which are very generous. The staff are very friendly as well. All in all a great course to play, and I will be a repeat customer....
Awesome experience
Golf course was in decent shape for the time of year. Greens could use a roller for firmer and faster conditions. Pro shop staff excelled and was very welcoming and polite. Tried making a tee time through the golf shop but could not understand the gentleman I was talking to, so booked through golfnow. The assistant pro, John, even gave me a quick tip at the turn and I went on to shoot my personal best for 9 holes on the back 9! Will be back again and often!
