Hell's Point Golf Club
About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

Overall well maintained course
The overall rating was fantastic. The course was challenging and overall well designed. Definitely a strategic course specifically the back nine. Nice staff will be playing here again.
Beautiful course creates a fun round!
I was drawn to play this course by the incredible value of the greens fee. When I actually arrived at the course, I was not disappointed. In the pro shop, the staff were friendly and helpful. Five dollars got me more than enough balls to warm-up on their range. Unusual, though, was the fact that they were "mats only" for the driving range with no obvious work being done to the range. Oh well.
The tee boxes are well-kept, as are the fairways. The greens are well kept, although the speed varies a bit from one to another. Fairways are mostly wide throughout the course, although there is slight variety in that as well. Don't get me started on the par threes--they're tough. They seem short, but beware the wind and bunker placements.
Overall, a great experience at the course!
I had a blast
I had the course to myself. It was in pretty darn good shape for March. It was fun and, with Golf-Now, a super value.
Fun course, good value.
This is a challenging course with lots of character. Usually in good condition and not too crowded. Good value especially with GolfNow discount.
Nice VB course
This course was pretty nice. It is tight and so you have to be accurate. If you aren't accurate with your driver you need to hit something you can hit straight or it will be a long day. The layout is nice and different. You have to pay attention to the signs to know how to get to each hole. Definitely would recommend. The golf now price was nice and even though it was busy the pace was still decent for a Sunday.
Great Staff! Would recommend.
The course was challenging but fun. Had a great time. Entire staff was friendly, especially the cart girl. Greens were in great shape, fairways were in good shape. I'll come back later in the summer.
It is a good course....lot of time it is wet. It needs a good drainage, other than that , I will play the course again...
Great value
What a great value at this course through Golf Now's hot deal.
Must play
I think this is a must play course if you are in the area. Course was wet from previous rain, but overall condition was excellent considering that and time of year (early Dec.) Loved the layout. Doglegs left and right, a few around large ponds that let you try to bite off as much as you can think you can chew. Staff was overwhelmingly friendly.
Amazing That This Course Is Playable, Already!
The first time I played here was several years ago while visiting the Hampton Roads area and I liked the course then, although I recall that the greens had very recently been aerated, with a lot of diseased areas. The greens that day really made the round less than enjoyable.
Fast forward about six years. This area was hit full-force by Hurricane Matthew just five days ago, with the area around the course receiving over a foot of rain in less than 24 hours. Needless to say, I was apprehensive about playing here today, expecting soggy, unplayable areas on the course. I wasn't totally wrong, however the entire crew has been working hard to make this course quite playable. Yes, there was quite a lot of soggy ground conditions on many of the holes, but with cart path only rules for the next week, there should be little damage to the turf. The storm caused many large trees to be knocked over, and where these fallen trees were encroaching on the area of play, or even the cart paths, they have been cleared away, for the most part. There is a lot of small tree debris in the deeper rough all along most holes, but the crew is working on getting that all cleaned up. The tee boxes are in good shape, and the fairways, other than being pretty wet, are playable. Although on #8 and #18, my approach shots were short of the green and the ball was completely plugged, becoming 100% buried in the fairway. Took some time & luck to locate each ball!
The greens had recently been aerated, but they are only a week or two away from not showing any more sings of this. In fact, the sand-filled holes on the greens are rolled in enough that they are more like little dots in the grass. On a couple of holes, they were aligned perfectly with the cup so that I could use them like runway lights, guiding my putts. LOL!
Aside from the current post-storm conditions, this course is fun in that it will make you think on a few holes with some doglegs in both directions, with pretty narrow landing areas on some of the fairways. And almost all of the greens are guarded by bunkers (which understandably have a lot of water in them right now). The location is out in the woods, with only one hole really near any traffic just outside the fence. The rest of the course is peaceful and really gives you the feeling of being secluded, which is a nice change from courses that are built with houses lining every fairway. This is a good course for all skill levels, except for maybe an absolute beginner - might be a little too challenging.
If you haven't played here, a $30.00 green fee is a fair deal, and GN sometimes has Hot Deals here for as little as $17.00, which would be an absolute steal!
Kudos to the staff here for getting this course in such good playing shape so quickly! In another week, this course will be in pristine condition. If you haven't played here, give it a try. I'll be back soon.
terrible conditions
had we known the greens had recently been aerorated and that the course was "under water" we wouldn't have played there - not counting the mosquitos carrying you away. Didn't know when we got there that the back 9 was closed. On the turn they had just opened up the back 9 - cart paths under water.
Awesome course period, incredible value!
This course is a Rees Jones design, making it an awesome layout. The architecture is really great. The course is heavily wooded, the greens are unique and challenging. The staff is amazing here; very friendly. They do an incredible job keeping this place in great shape. It is still recovering from the recent flooding, but that being said the course is in immaculate condition. The greens are prime condition, the fairways are great. Some of the tee boxes are struggling, but that doesn't detract from playability at all. I played as a single as the first tee time of the day and walked the course in less than 3 hours. :)
Worst course
I went I play this course and they said it was to wet to use a cart so they made us walk well while we were walking the the workers where easily driving on the course with no damage being done. A few hole later they were watering the course and the pro shop employees were rude I wouldn't reccomend this course to anyone
Nice course
Nice course with just a bit of toughness added in. Play your shots straight or you could be in trouble here.
Condition
Best condition it has ever been in ....played well had fun..kudos to management
