Hell's Point Golf Club
About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

Amazing That This Course Is Playable, Already!
The first time I played here was several years ago while visiting the Hampton Roads area and I liked the course then, although I recall that the greens had very recently been aerated, with a lot of diseased areas. The greens that day really made the round less than enjoyable.
Fast forward about six years. This area was hit full-force by Hurricane Matthew just five days ago, with the area around the course receiving over a foot of rain in less than 24 hours. Needless to say, I was apprehensive about playing here today, expecting soggy, unplayable areas on the course. I wasn't totally wrong, however the entire crew has been working hard to make this course quite playable. Yes, there was quite a lot of soggy ground conditions on many of the holes, but with cart path only rules for the next week, there should be little damage to the turf. The storm caused many large trees to be knocked over, and where these fallen trees were encroaching on the area of play, or even the cart paths, they have been cleared away, for the most part. There is a lot of small tree debris in the deeper rough all along most holes, but the crew is working on getting that all cleaned up. The tee boxes are in good shape, and the fairways, other than being pretty wet, are playable. Although on #8 and #18, my approach shots were short of the green and the ball was completely plugged, becoming 100% buried in the fairway. Took some time & luck to locate each ball!
The greens had recently been aerated, but they are only a week or two away from not showing any more sings of this. In fact, the sand-filled holes on the greens are rolled in enough that they are more like little dots in the grass. On a couple of holes, they were aligned perfectly with the cup so that I could use them like runway lights, guiding my putts. LOL!
Aside from the current post-storm conditions, this course is fun in that it will make you think on a few holes with some doglegs in both directions, with pretty narrow landing areas on some of the fairways. And almost all of the greens are guarded by bunkers (which understandably have a lot of water in them right now). The location is out in the woods, with only one hole really near any traffic just outside the fence. The rest of the course is peaceful and really gives you the feeling of being secluded, which is a nice change from courses that are built with houses lining every fairway. This is a good course for all skill levels, except for maybe an absolute beginner - might be a little too challenging.
If you haven't played here, a $30.00 green fee is a fair deal, and GN sometimes has Hot Deals here for as little as $17.00, which would be an absolute steal!
Kudos to the staff here for getting this course in such good playing shape so quickly! In another week, this course will be in pristine condition. If you haven't played here, give it a try. I'll be back soon.
terrible conditions
had we known the greens had recently been aerorated and that the course was "under water" we wouldn't have played there - not counting the mosquitos carrying you away. Didn't know when we got there that the back 9 was closed. On the turn they had just opened up the back 9 - cart paths under water.
Awesome course period, incredible value!
This course is a Rees Jones design, making it an awesome layout. The architecture is really great. The course is heavily wooded, the greens are unique and challenging. The staff is amazing here; very friendly. They do an incredible job keeping this place in great shape. It is still recovering from the recent flooding, but that being said the course is in immaculate condition. The greens are prime condition, the fairways are great. Some of the tee boxes are struggling, but that doesn't detract from playability at all. I played as a single as the first tee time of the day and walked the course in less than 3 hours. :)
Worst course
I went I play this course and they said it was to wet to use a cart so they made us walk well while we were walking the the workers where easily driving on the course with no damage being done. A few hole later they were watering the course and the pro shop employees were rude I wouldn't reccomend this course to anyone
Nice course
Nice course with just a bit of toughness added in. Play your shots straight or you could be in trouble here.
Condition
Best condition it has ever been in ....played well had fun..kudos to management
Good day at Hells' Point
Great weather and getting paired into a friendly threesome was a stroke of good luck, and pace of play was acceptable. This was my fourth trip to Hells' Point golf Course, and without a doubt, it was in the best condition I've ever seen. It actually allowed me to really enjoy the layout and shot-making choices. I'll go back.
Enjoyable course
Nice course layout, wish it was in a bit better shape. For the price though, it couldn't be beat. Rental clubs are a little pricey.
First timer
I played the course 2 times this past weekend I had to leave early on the first day had a couple of members with me. The course was tight the rough was thick this course makes you hit great shots to score well. I played from the tips on the first day whites on the next...regardless of where you play from the shot selection is the key, greens are guarded very well greens were soft but nice to putt on...
I haven't played in the area too often but i can say I will play here when ever I return....and great staff I must say the cart was by my car after I came from paying and I didn't have to ask.... Great layout back as well loved the scenery even though I didn't see any snakes :-) which was a plus... You cannot go wrong at this course prices were great I must add
Nice course
other than the water being empty at all the holes, it was a great course.
Great layout and scenery all around
Play it for just a bucket list option at a great price @GolfNow. Exceeded all expectations and all around great experience. Came as a single and played along with a couple other gentleman who were great company. Course was challenging but fair and had some great dog legs and views. It being my first look and play of the course, I always enjoy taking in the sights and challenges and added focus on playing well to put up a decent score. Great times for sure...
Good value for the money
Friendly and accommodating staff. Course was in good condition for the weather that was going on in the VAB area.
Good layout, poorly maintained.
Great course layout and the greens were in good shape. Unfortunately most of the tee boxes were horrendous and a majority of the holes had very poorly maintained areas around the greens, especially #18. For $40 on a Saturday morning the value is decent considering its close to a tourist destination. Not really sure what the ranger does while driving around the course all day though, as he's clearly not telling people to pick up the pace of play.
Great Wildlife
Although, it was extremely hot it was a great round of golf. Everyone was friendly, and accommodating. Hot Deal for $13.00!!
Great afternoon
Great day except for the group ahead with 4 golfers and a kid. Also the guy in a hurry trying to impress his girlfriend by hitting into me and my wife. Good greens and the ball checks up nicely.
You have been measured and found lacking !!
Was looking forward to playing the course the reviews made the course seem nice. Wrong!!! The fairways had scraggly grass that you could see the ground underneath your ball. The ball never seemed to come out of it well. The greens were the slowest that I have played on in 30 years. It was very disappointing. The only good things about the was the snack bar and the prettiest beverage cart girl I've ever seen. She good around the course fast. Make sure to tip her well if you do play there. If the grass was good then the course layout would make it a interesting course to play.
Great value
Currently visited VA Beach on vacation. We had the opportunity to play some golf. The Golf Course was close to our vacation spot. It was a great experience. The staff were welcoming and friendly. Really made for a great experience . We enjoyed it so much we played the course twice. Looking forward to returning in the future.
Thanks so much for enhancing our vacation!

Course is very challenging
The course was very soaked from rain the previous day's. The wetness of the course make the play very challenging. Overall I am looking forward to playing the course in the summer when the group is dry and tight.
Hells Point
Nice course. Plenty of sand bunkers throughout.. Some water hazards but not too many. Fairways rather soft but to be expected since course is built on natural wetlands. Have played here twice both times cart path only for entire course. Greens are fast and challenging due to slopes and undulations but enjoyable.
Excellent service and excellent bang for your buck!
Fantastic service, left a couple clubs on 16 and they were willing to ship them all the way to Ohio provided I pay for shipping. Saved me so much hassle in finding new clubs with my specs. Great course, great layout. Lots of risk/reward holes.
