Old Hickory Golf Club

About
Beaver Creek divides Old Hickory Golf Club with nine holes sitting north of the creek and nine holes south. The course has a classic parkland layout that plays across gently rolling hills. The fairways were cut through forests of mature hardwoods but they are wide and carefully sculpted to direct balls toward the middle. Skillful players could even try to use the contours to their advantage. Each hole has a bunkers but the bunkering is not excessive. In addition to the mounding and bunkering, the undulating terrain provides natural elevation changes. The golf course finishes with what is arguably its toughest hole. This monster par 5 is 620 yards from the back tees. It requires a drive over a ravine with a natural waste area to the left. Many consider it to be the toughest golf hole in northern Virginia.

This course has seen better days
I have played this course a bunch over the past five years and I've never seen it in worse shape. Tee boxes are incredibly beat up, the greens are very patchy, and the bunkers are just dirt with weeds growing in them. I will say, the Cart Path Only holes are in much better condition than the others, which lead me to believe its an overuse issue more than anything else. Then again, courses tend to skimp on conditions when real estate companies come calling for the land.
I hope Old Hickory's issues are the former and not the latter, because I really do enjoy this course when the conditions are nice.
A Hidden Gem – Beautiful Course, Friendly Vibe, and Solid Challenge
Old Hickory Golf Club is an absolute pleasure to play. The grounds are beautifully maintained, with lush fairways, smooth greens, and scenic views that make every hole enjoyable. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, creating a relaxed and inviting atmosphere from the moment I arrived.
The course layout is well-designed, offering a fair but challenging test for the average golfer. With strategically placed bunkers, subtle doglegs, and just enough elevation changes to keep things interesting, it requires smart course management but never feels overwhelming. The greens rolled true, and the pace of play was solid throughout the round.
I’ll definitely be back—Old Hickory strikes that perfect balance of challenge and playability that makes for a fun round. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy a quality golf experience in a beautiful setting.
Old Hickory
Greens were in great shape. Fairways were ok. The bunkers were plain nasty; hard pan, hardly any sand, lots of rocks. Not ideal bunker conditions. Some could even ruled as ground under repair. Played here many times. I’ll be back. Food and drinks have always been good.
All bunkers unplayable
Used to be great but now just about all bunkers filled with standing water. Fairways not bad, greens ok. Waited awhile in pro shop for someone to check me in. Course was empty. It’s a shame.
Beautiful fair, but tough
First time playing here. Great layout tough and challenging
Golf
Pace of play is horrendous, if I’m paying top dollar $100+, there should be active marshaling. Just look at the reviews about pace of play, it’s true. I second it! First time playing here.
5.25hrs for what is supposed to be 4.5hrs round, and there is signage in all golf carts indicating pace of play 😂 and exact timing.
Not getting my money again.
Nice course, played better courses for less money and they were actively marshaled.
Please, avoid.
Golf
Beautiful course, nice and fast greens. Tee boxes are bland, no tee markers, just a painted wooden stick.
Pace of play is garbage, if I and other golfers are paying $100+, the pace of play should be kept. Theres also signage in the cart about pace of play, 2hrs15 for 9holes, 4.5hrs total. Round was 5.25hrs. It was 1 group in front of us, and frankly? The etiquette and decorum of golf has been lost. If you’re splitting a car with someone, take a club or two and go to your ball and split up. People all over the course searching with no clubs 100-200 feet away from their cart.
You need to do much better on monitoring this, Old Hickory mgmt, if I’m paying $100/rd, you can hire a Marshall or 2. That crap was ridiculous on pace of play.
Sand traps were crappy but it rained terribly the night before - not much I believe can be done there, but $100-$110/rd….
No yardage markers in/on the course.
Everyone staff-wise was nice. Not worth $100-$110 for the experience, maybe $75 at best
My review stopped me for “inappropriate language”describing course conditions, and not pace of play - but it’s the truth, 🤷♂️
I can’t tell enough people how bad this place was today
Writing this review as I wait to tee off on the 9th hole, 2:45 after I teed off on the 1st hole. The ranger literally said there is nothing he can do. Yes you can. You can tell people playing slow to skip holes and speed up. Just an awful experience.
