Old Hickory Golf Club
About
Beaver Creek divides Old Hickory Golf Club with nine holes sitting north of the creek and nine holes south. The course has a classic parkland layout that plays across gently rolling hills. The fairways were cut through forests of mature hardwoods but they are wide and carefully sculpted to direct balls toward the middle. Skillful players could even try to use the contours to their advantage. Each hole has a bunkers but the bunkering is not excessive. In addition to the mounding and bunkering, the undulating terrain provides natural elevation changes. The golf course finishes with what is arguably its toughest hole. This monster par 5 is 620 yards from the back tees. It requires a drive over a ravine with a natural waste area to the left. Many consider it to be the toughest golf hole in northern Virginia.

Course Conditions
The golf course is in horrible condition and we found out after we got there it was aerated which made it almost impossible to read and make putts, and the fact that it was cart path only. Not worth the money or travel for now
Course is unplayable
Greens were just aerated without any communication on their website. I was shocked to come up to the first green and the aerated holes were the size of dimes without any top dressing! You could not putt on them, you might as well have putted blindfolded. Golf ball was bouncing around as you putted. Add to this that it was cart path only on the hottest day of the year on a busy Saturday....unbelievable. Who is managing this course?
Next time, tell the consumer your product is not up to par and adjust your price accordingly......this is poor management and I will not be coming back anytime soon.
Great day at Old Hickory
First time at this course. Local knowledge would help. We had a great time. Great conditions, pace of play. Enjoyed the greens. Be careful finding the tunnel from 14 to 15.
Cart path Only
I have played this course a lot and it’s typically a good value given how expensive courses are in NOVA. The pace of play here is also pretty good. Just can’t understand why it was cart path only yesterday given how great a condition it was in. It was 93 degrees and humid yesterday and it made for a really long and hot round not being able to drive carts on the fairway. There were very few places that were even damp that we could tell. Frustrating to say the least.
Great rate, but...
I usually love playing here. But on a Wednesday afternoon before the 4th, it was a bit of a mess. No starter, no beverage cart, water stations empty, evidently a change in the range policy (mediocre range + no complimentary balls = poor value) and as everyone in the DMV knows, no ranger. Bunkers in bad condition, ladies in the bar nice when there was a break in the World Cup game, people driving cross country to cut in and out of play, groups off the back nine at will, etc, etc. Can't complain too much because of the rate and I'll be back, but it will be in the early morning to get done before this nonsense.
Great course
Excellent course. Tee boxes were a little messy and need some serious work but fairways and greens on point. Def coming back. Pace was great.
Sand needs some work
Bunkers need some major work and greens were very slow and hairy. Overall great course conditions, some tee boxes where a little rough. Also refreshment stand near practice area was not open on a Sunday morning roun, which was a surprise.
Pretty Alright
I’ll keep it simple.
Pros: layout was pretty good. Good test at times off the tee.
Greens were in good shape, fairly consistent and the fairways/ tee boxes likewise.
Pretty cheap ($40) for a Friday afternoon.
What staff I did encounter was very friendly.
The grounds were very clean and nice.
Cons: bunkers were terrible. Lots of standing water in most bunkers I saw or attempted to hit out of (rained THREE days prior).
Pace was subject but was remedied by passing the group that was not letting anyone by. No marshaling but for a non busy afternoon that’s to be expected.
All in all I’ll definitely be back but being new to the area I will explore all of my options.
Great overall round and will play again!
Fairways and greens were in very nice shape.
A few sand bunkers were very wet and it has not rained in days - there were also grass bunkers that were old sand bunkers that contained hazard stakes or were under maintenance. Tee boxes need some TLC.
Active cart girl for adult beverages and breakfast sandwiches/snacks.
A Beautiful Day On The Course
From the registration to the end of play the staff and course were all that was expected of a well organized establishment. We were informed of a mini-tourney which was in-play and that we would be following it. Paced of play was not hindered and staff was available to ascertain the tee time of pending players. We were able to tee off as scheduled. The course itself was well maintained and played with well cared fairways and greens.
Very Slow and Maintenance Issues
A good golf course, but extremely slow pace of play. We played the first four holes in an hour and forty-five minutes. Gave up on the front and drove the cart until we found an open hole, which was the 13th and played the last six holes unimpeded in about an hour. So, we played ten holes in around three hours, then quit. No ranger on the course. Bunkers in very poor condition. Mostly hard pan and some with a considerable amount of water in them. Greens, fairways and tees OK. As is typical of a public access course, divots not filled and ball marks not repaired. Massive obstructions and damage left by Canadian Geese, which could be remedied by having a Border Collie on staff. We get the impression that the club is in financial trouble, due to the lack of maintenance and cramming of players leading to the slow play.
Great layout, but needs some work
I really enjoyed the layout and will definitely play again but parts of the course need a lot of work. Pros of the course were the tight tee shots, requirement to work the ball often, tough pin spots with a lot of shelf greens.
Cons: Tee boxes were aerated recently but some were in really bad shape. We were playing the back tees and there were a few holes on the back nine where they didnt have the stones out for the back tees? Fairways and greens were in good shape, greens were on the slow side but the holes were cut very sloppy. Biggest complaint was the inconsistency of the bunkers. Some were packed tight, some fluffy, some full of large rocks with no sand at all. There were also multiple holes where it looks like there use to be greenside bunkers but they tried to replace them with grass and then gave up. These areas were completely unplayable but also not marked as ground under repair. Course attracts a lot of hackers, not sure why, but we had an 11am tee time on a Saturday and it was a 5 hour round.
Overall, I'll play again because the layout is great and very challenging but I hope they continue to put money back into the course and make some much needed improvements.
Beautiful Gary Player style course
Just had the pleasure of playing the other Gary Player course... Raspberry Falls on Saturday. It was interesting to see the similarities. The greens at Hickory were in much better condition and fast. Arrived after a tournament and had the place to myself. Course is just as challenging as Raspberry Falls.. No doubt I'll be returning.
Always enjoy this course
Always worth the drive to this course - great layout and conditions very good although front nine always a little damp for some reason. Always good luck with getting matched up (played as a single) with good groups. Pace of play pretty good with a little wait on most holes - usually not a big deal, but this was at 6:40am - the promise that the members out front would play fast really didn't happen. Warm up/range area in poor condition, from mats to balls - group almost got hit a couple of times on 5th hole maybe due to huge holes in range netting. Bar/restaurant understaffed, although very friendly; regulars clearly get preferential treatment.
Will be back due to layout and challenge, but management group should put a couple of bucks back into the place.
Great round
This course was in great condition, this was one of the best courses I’d played in a while. I’ll definitely come back. The staff was very friendly and helped show me where to start, practice. Great day over all
Good Conditions
Course was in good shape -- not great, but good. Greens were in good shape and the ball rolled nicely. Fairways and tees also good. The rough is inconsistent -- high in some areas and dead in others. Bunkers were OK, not great. This is a challenging course and the conditions are better than other courses in the area.
Great course
Great course layout....encountered a rude staff member in the club house at the bar....but the course made up for it!
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
I played 1st thing the next morning and was given a 2 for 1 coupon due to the conditions. I think that is fair compensation. Maybe if you show your receipt, they will provide a discount the next time.
