Old Hickory Golf Club
About
Beaver Creek divides Old Hickory Golf Club with nine holes sitting north of the creek and nine holes south. The course has a classic parkland layout that plays across gently rolling hills. The fairways were cut through forests of mature hardwoods but they are wide and carefully sculpted to direct balls toward the middle. Skillful players could even try to use the contours to their advantage. Each hole has a bunkers but the bunkering is not excessive. In addition to the mounding and bunkering, the undulating terrain provides natural elevation changes. The golf course finishes with what is arguably its toughest hole. This monster par 5 is 620 yards from the back tees. It requires a drive over a ravine with a natural waste area to the left. Many consider it to be the toughest golf hole in northern Virginia.

Enjoyed it
Pro Shop staff was excellent when checking in and paying.
The starter, John, was extremely helpful and the most professional person i've ever met at a course.
I'm only rating this an average because I feel this course is overrated for the value. Now, I did get a discount and paid $56 for the round, but i've seen normal fairs as high as $90. I would never play Old Hickory for that amount of money. The driving range was laughable at best.
Course was is pretty good condition, pace of play was okay. Be sure to not miss the turn to hole 15, it wasn't marked very well and we ended driving by it.
Happy with the course, just wouldn't pay full price or weekend prices.
Good shape after very rainy night
2nd time I've played Hickory this year and was in very good shape. Bunkers took major hit from storm the previous evening (1 + inches of rain). Greens were sticking but rolling great
Great course
Course is in excellent shape and a good challenge to for my game - 9HCP. One of my top choices now...
A thinking player's course
This course requires thinking. It is NOT for beginners. There are holes that require finesse and holes that require power. It's a great layout that makes you use almost every club. Some irons are required off the tees and too many people try to blast away---usually with terrible results because this course is narrow with lots 0f waste areas and forced carries.
The 18th hole is nearly impossible to par. Good variety of par 3's but nothing memorable. The par 4's and 5's are the strength of the course.
The cons are that the driving range is irons only and needs to be redone. The course has many outings and the greens and tee boxes get beat up. Far too many greens have unrepaired divots.
This would be a tough nearly impossible course to walk.
Great value
The fairways were in great shape albeit a little soggy from watering. The greens had been aerated recently but they rolled fairly smoothly. Tee to green is challenging, particularly the 5s on the back, but the real challenge is the greens. They're fast and undulating and you must keep your approach below the hole. Our 3some had numerous 3-putts that day. Staff was very pleasant. Driving range needs much improvement. Definitely recommend the course to anyone with some game...not for beginners.
Nice place
Very nice course. Challenging but fair. The first 9 was slow due to a large outing but picked up on the back. The staff explained all of this when we arrived so we weren't surprised or frustrated by it. Worth playing.
Good test
This is a good course with a number of challenges. Staff was very friendly. It was an enjoyable round of golf on a very nice summer day. Anyone playing this course will find it challenging but rewarding.
Bad Experience
I had a really bad experience on Wednesday. They didn't have a starter so people were going out entirely to early and everyone was clustered. I was a single almost all day and there were foursomes in front of me that had no intention of letting me play thru. So I skip a few holes, soon to be caught behind another foursome. If there was a starter all of this would have been sorted easily.
Player maintenance is lacking
Overall, Old Hickory is a great layout with stunning scenery, challenging holes and risk/reward opportunities.
Unfortunately, the course is in "so so" condition due to a lack of sand in the carts, which leads to many unfilled divots in the fairways. Similarly, golfers do not appear to repair their ball marks on the greens. The greens themselves are in great shape, but are pock-marked and do not roll true.
This would be worth every penny of full price if those two simple issues were fixed.
Exceeded My Expectations
My brother-in-law recommended this course as a backup for days when our course is closed. He described it as enjoyable and in good condition.
His comments were an understatement. The course has the feel of a private club with the conditions and amenities. The layout is great, the pace was perfect. I am definitely putting this on my short list of courses to play.
PACE OF PLAY
DO NOT PLAY HERE ON THE WEEKENDS: PACE OF PLAY IS 5+ HOURS. For $90 you should expect more. We were the 5th tee time on Sunday and we were already behind 10 minutes. By the time we got to hole 12, there were 4 groups waiting to play. 1 group on the green, 1 in the fairway, 1 on the tee box and 1 waiting for the tee box. When we called to ask them to send a marshal, they did nothing. We finished 12 and 13 and arrived at hole 14 at 10 a.m. At the current rate of play it would have taken 5.5 hours to play the course. We decided to call it a day and let the assistant pro know. He was quite unprofessional and let us know that we were not behind. He said that they don't count the time the reservation is made as the starting time. They use the time that they here the first ball struck on the first tee as a starting time. So i guess there is not point in making a tee time there as they do not count starting late as a pace of play issue. Even with out the 10 minutes differential we were behind. Overall we waited on every tee box, there was no sand on the carts, they greens were recently aerated (should be an automatic discount), and the practice facilities are not up to the $90 price tag (can't use driver and mats were very badly worn).
Great Course for all levels
This course is very well designed and very enjoyable. There is one issue and its the pin placements. For some reason, the management insist on placing about half of the pins 10-12 feet from the edge of the green. It makes the round of golf seem like a trip to the family put put course with clowns and windmills. I wish they would stop doing this. I have seen it every time I have played the course and kills the experience.
Not this time!
I have played this course several times and really like it. I don't play it too often because of the expense. I bought this round through GolfNow at a discounted price. It was probably discounted because the greens had just been aerated. The greens and the course in general were not up to the usual standards of this course. I'll think twice before playing here again at a discounted price
Old Hickory
Beautiful fairways with smooth fast greens. Unfortunately they were just aerated but still putted well. Will definetly play again.
Good track
A beautiful course, fairly tight. On many holes, the sides drain to the center - forgiving. A fair number of divots, but didn't affect play. Many complained of the slow pace - we finished in 4.25 hours, tee'd off at 3pm on a Sunday afternoon. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Not bad
Lay out of course give me fun. I enjoyed it. But, on the fairway, there are too many divot marks. And oops!! aeration on the green.
Old Hickory is a pleasure
From the moment I arrived, I was greeted by a friendly young woman in the pro shop. She informed me of the complimentary practice facility and let me know that I could go out when ready. The course is in great shape. The only negative was that on two holes, the water stations were empty.
Great course fair condition
This is an outstanding course let down by players and staff not insisting on the basics. Greens were great but heavily ball marked and numerous ball marks let untreated. The bunkers were unraked by previous players. Tees were very scruffy due to heavy traffic.
The course needs to enforce the basis etiquette and players should respect the conditions of course when others are playing behind.
It's still a great course and fun to play back lacked that sparkle which would make it awesome.
Great Course
Had a blast. My friend and I played 36 in 6 hours with no wait times and the staff was very helpful getting us around a 2nd time. Would play over and over!!
