Nice track
Course was very nice. Played after many days of rain. Was cart path only but still played in four hours. Conditions were ok considering the previous rain. Some areas will need to be fixed but would play again.
Too much money for the condition of xourse
Course is laid out nicely. Challenging which is great. Nice clubhouse and people are friendly.
Cons:
Fairways are horrible. No grass and basically in poor condition. Constantly digging all clubs because you are on dirt. Grass the height of the putting greens.
Sand traps. While they've had a lot of rain, if you are going to charge 68$ a round, get some sand and groom the traps. Put drainage in them.
Greens. While they replanted last year, they haven't really took hold. Mossy and muddy.
It's a beautiful course layout with great views, it's just too much money for the quality of play.
The Preserve
Great course, played early in season, would look better later on. Although fairways and rough were dormant, which would have been better visually, with elevation changes and fairway turns, it was a very enjoyable round. Good bunker placements and subtle sloping greens, which putt very nicely, everybody who can, should try this course. Course attendants very helpful.
Great course, excellent value
I took advantage of the 2 player promotion and took a friend to play on 23 March. The cost was $32 a piece, which, for the Preserve is an outstanding value.
The course itself was in decent shape. The new Champion Bermuda greens weren't quite as receptive as I had hoped, but they were in great condition. Most of the fairways were as hard as a rock, but still in decent condition. Strangely, other areas were incredibly muddy. In fact we got our cart stuck in one area. Maybe they've been over watering in these places?
In any case, it's always a good round here. It's a challenging course with some very picturesque holes and lots of opportunities to stretch your game.
Nice greens. Too wet
Wouldn't play after any sorta rain. Fairways were too wet!
17 holes in 5.5 hours
Pros:
The Preserve is a nice course with good facilities and friendly staff. It's moderately long with plenty of elevation changes and a good bit of water in play. Usually in very good condition, and usually a lot more than the $30 we paid with a prepaid Hot Deal.
Cons:
So. Incredibly. Slow.
The course was cart path only due to recent heavy rains (I'd hoped that 3 days of good weather would have been enough to let it drain, but we have had a lot of rain this month). It was also very full, and backed up from a frost delay.
The check in process was very organized, the starter was hustling around getting everyone checked in and making sure they got to the tee on time. Given the focus on getting everyone to the first tee, I had hopes that the staff would monitor the pace of play and keep things moving as best they could, but we saw the ranger exactly once on the slow front 9.
Things only got worse on the back, as a foursome held up the entire course, seemingly oblivious to the groups waiting on the men's tees while one of their group took 3 shots to reach the ladies' tees (I wish I was joking, it happened 3 holes in a row). They refused to even acknowledge our request to play through. Eventually we skipped a hole to get in front of them and found clear sailing for the rest of the back 9. There were at least 3 holes clear in front of them. We never saw a ranger on the back.
I know that conditions were not good for fast play, but if the course isn't going to do anything about pace of play on the course I'd appreciate not being herded around the practice green to get me to the tee on time.
Given the remoteness of the course and the pace of play, it will probably be a long time before I play The Preserve again, even with the screaming Hot Deal price I paid.
great value for the money
we played on wed. dec 9 after lunch. it was a very nice day. the course was in great shape. I couldn't find anything wrong with this course if I tried. the greens were fast as any that I've played on. best course ever.
Great course. New greens are in great shape.
Course can be a narrow course for some golfers. Layout is wonderful with a lot of up or down hill shots. New greens are rolling nice and should be great in the spring. All fairways are in great shape. The areas around the green are still full which usually isnt the case for most of the green side areas at other courses in the Triangle. Staff is great as well. Remember to ask for a players card. After 5 rounds they will give you a free greens fee.
Very demanding course!
Staff is very accommodating! Course is in great shape & very demanding!
Great day
Excellent conditions (and weather). The staff is great.
Challenging but fun
Course elevation changes and deep waste areas were challenging, but enjoyed the experience. Looking forward to next round.
Nice and challenging course
The course layout is challenging with a good number of holes that require postion shots. The green are fast and consistent. The fairways, tee boxes, and rough were green and in good shape. There were some leaves and mud tire tracks from carts/work vehicles. This is a nice option.
Great Golf for the Price
Enjoy the beauty and challenge of this course. I'm a weekend golfer but the Preserve is one of my favorites in Raleigh, NC. It's a course that at the end of the day you know you played a great golf course even if you don't have a great score to go with it.
The Preserve
The course was very nice, newly grassed Bermuda greens that was a bit tricky and I'm not sure if were all the same firmness. Quite a few forced carries which made pretty difficult, a lot of chances for lost balls. Overall very nice.
slow, very slow, always slow
played this course 3 or 4 times since new greens put in, slow play, even before the new greens were in, this course has always been slow paced, took 5 hours to play round , and this seems to be a normal round every time I play there. 4some in front of us were very slow, never got any warning from ranger, which is normal. I play less and less golf because of slow play and costs, guess the golf course owners don't get this and eventually more and more courses will shut down
Tough but beautiful
This course really kicked my butt, but it was worth it. I played the blues and you really have to drive it well to score here. I'm a decent golfer, but probably lost 6 balls on errant tee shots. The fairways are all sloped and the woods lining the course are pretty thick. The condition of the course was awesome, greens are new and play like it. A little slower than you would imagine, but once they establish and cut them down, they will play fast. Everything else is beautiful, from the houses lining the course, to the views from the constant elevation changes. I would definitely play this course again.
Great golf course south of Chapel Hill
Good golf course, I would play here again. Challenging but manageable.
Well Designed and Well Kept
This is a nicely laid out course and the greens and fairways are well taken care of. (Last time was on temporary greens, but we were told this in advance and price was discounted.) Staff is nice. It is a fairly long and difficult course - not the best for beginners. On the weekend anyway you also need to contend with noise from the many houses along some of the fairways, dogs barking, kids screaming, music, etc. There are also some long distances between holes so this is probably not a great course for walkers. All-in-all though this is probably a course a serious golfer should try.
New Greens
The new greens are amazing!!! Fast and accurate reads, clean, course is in great shape, friendly staff and supurbe facility!
Lots of planning, and luck needed to hit greens
This is not your typical "grip and rip" course. Every hole will require some thinking to come up with a game plan, and you will need to hit some accurate/lucky shots to pull off that game plan. Also, there are at least 3-4 holes where you are shooting blind over hills, and two of them have creeks/hazards you can't see unless you drive up to take a look first. None of this is actually bad in my books -- it just makes the course more interesting to play. Overall, I really enjoyed my game, and look forward to playing it again some time soon.
