The Shark's turned in what's widely regarded as the second-toughest course at PGA WEST - Greg Norman Course in La Quinta.

No small feat considering the developers of the neighboring TPC Stadium ordered Pete Dye to make it, "the hardest damn golf course in the world."

"There's a difference," said Jack Guevera, a golfer who's played both. "You might think you have it easy if you play the Norman after the Stadium .... But probably not."

Here's the difference: Dye tries to kill you at TPC Stadium. Norman only wants to beat you to a pulp.

Not that pummeling does not have its highlights. Norman's 216-yard, par-3 13th is the kind of hole that seizes your attention and lingers in memory after the round.

What little fairway there is curves around toward a man-made lake. It is also tilted down on a sharp angle to the water, giving the golfer the effect of hitting along a ledge.

Each shot is a tap dance here. You could not even get odds in Vegas on your chances of avoiding all of the deep, slanted bunkers that squeeze the mini fairway even tighter.

"Greg Norman wants you to choke," TravelGolf.com West Coast Bureau Chief Chris Baldwin said. "The supremely-talented, enthrallingly-entertaining golfer cursed to be forever remembered for his excruciating collapses wants the average hacker to experience just a taste of this misery."

Don’t waste your Money

Fairways were mowed to different depths. Putting greens like concrete. Bunkers were not well groomed. Definitely not reflecting the caliber of a PGA West course. The course was disappointingly manicured.

Server in restaurant and snack bar were warm and friendly.

Don’t waste your money!!

Greens are like concrete. Just no fun to play when good shots are not rewarded. It is a good layout and in good condition, but paying over $100 for a round with concrete greens is a joke.

Below average greens

Fees should be reduced based on the condition of the greens which are barren and don’t hold. Pace of play great because most have probably figured out it is t worth the money

too much money for the condition

The course was in terrible condition. There is no grass on the greens. For the price it is unacceptable. The course should have informed us, and we would have played one of the other courses. Very disappointing

Interesting greens

Took some time to get used to these greens. The closest experience I've had is sand greens on a muni in S. Dakota. Very firm - generally take one less club and land short of the green or you'll never hold it due to firmness and dome-like design.

A great course layout, a little neglected in March 2022

This is our eighth or ninth year playing at the Greg Norman course in La Quinta. A great layout, great practice area, and generally a great environment. However, the course is not in great shape this year looking like it had been under watered and under attended. Too bad, because this is a top-notch course otherwise.

Not worth the Money

Played this course hoping that for the cost it would be pristine but found the greens to be very hard almost dry looked yellow from the distance. The fringe was patchy on some holes.

The clubhouse staff were great but the starter had the personality of a rock just wanted the cart number then off you go nothing about the course no tips or holes to keep in mind. When paying so much it’s the whole experience and unfortunately this one fell way short. Save some bucks and if you want to play a PGA west course try Peter Dye Mountain course.

Poor poor condition but nice layout

Whole course was redid face lift . Very very poor condition of fairway and green was very slow. Not worth $150+ to played here . I did read the review of the condition before I booked this course. But I thought we might played once here to see how bad it was. But I was wrong who might believe all the reviews. GolfNow need to let the people know the poor condition of this course. Hope all the golfers read this review and don't try your luck to play this course this year.

GolfNow - Let us Know of Poor Conditions

From Montana - booked thru GolfNow - showed up with 8 players - $200 per. - $1,600 total. During check-in, told they re-seeded greens - didn’t offer to reduce fees - greens were basically rolled mud, did not hold any shot - putting was very inconsistent / some very bumpy.

Had a few cocktails after - nice area. Some other members found out we were traveling and were embarrassed by the condition and the $200 fee.

Somehow, GolfNow and the course needs to work together to let golfer know of poor conditions….

Service is definitely lacking

Paid $340 to play the course for a twosome (that's $445 Cdn for us snowbirds). It was a perfect day for golf, but if you wanted something to eat or drink, good luck.... Waited forever for a basic breakfast when there was only 4 other people out on the patio. Headed out and was hoping to see the cart girl at some point as it was super hot that day. Nothing, so when we got to the turn, stopped at clubhouse. She finally came by on hole #17. Not a great experience and likely won't make the drive out to this course next visit to Palm Springs.

Perfect experience for moderate/good golfers. Much lower key, less crowded than other PGAWEST courses.

Excellent facilities, in pristine condition, very well cared for.
