The Shark's turned in what's widely regarded as the second-toughest course at PGA WEST - Greg Norman Course in La Quinta.

No small feat considering the developers of the neighboring TPC Stadium ordered Pete Dye to make it, "the hardest damn golf course in the world."

"There's a difference," said Jack Guevera, a golfer who's played both. "You might think you have it easy if you play the Norman after the Stadium .... But probably not."

Here's the difference: Dye tries to kill you at TPC Stadium. Norman only wants to beat you to a pulp.

Not that pummeling does not have its highlights. Norman's 216-yard, par-3 13th is the kind of hole that seizes your attention and lingers in memory after the round.

What little fairway there is curves around toward a man-made lake. It is also tilted down on a sharp angle to the water, giving the golfer the effect of hitting along a ledge.

Each shot is a tap dance here. You could not even get odds in Vegas on your chances of avoiding all of the deep, slanted bunkers that squeeze the mini fairway even tighter.

"Greg Norman wants you to choke," TravelGolf.com West Coast Bureau Chief Chris Baldwin said. "The supremely-talented, enthrallingly-entertaining golfer cursed to be forever remembered for his excruciating collapses wants the average hacker to experience just a taste of this misery."

course in great condition

I played with a PGA West member. I commented that the course seemed easier than a previous visit. He said work had been done to make it more user friendly, especially from forward tees. I really enjoyed my day here

Slow pace

Course is extremely well taken care of. I'm very high handicapper but with the exception of two or three holes found the course very playable. Had two foursomes in front of us that were very slow; we had to wait five minutes on EVERY shot. It was also very windy which is unusual for Palm Springs but having just come from Colorado enjoyed the comfortable temperature. The slow pace is highly acceptable to the course (no marshalls) in fact they brag about 4hour and thirty minute pace time on their score card.If playing in the winter get AM tee times;we had 1:57PM time and were not able to finish all 18 holes.

Mostly excellent conditions

Had a nice round there today. Probably around the 10th time playing the course, but first this year. Very lush, however the tee boxes were a bit fuzzy as well as the fairways. Not sure i have ever said this about a course, but the fairways were slow. Quite soft and needing to be cut. Not a lot of roll at all. Made the course play longer than usual. Greens were excellent and consistent. The staff - well, not sure who psssed in their cornflakes this morning, but what a grumpy bunch. The lady at the pro shop was completely stone-faced. The starter was the most unfriendly starter I think I have ever experienced. Just a lazy sod. No instructions, no welcoming, nothing.

Late Tee Time Hoping To Get in More Holes

We booked a late Tee Time at 2pm or so. Unfortunately, the starter let a last minute addition to a two some in front of us that was an employee and his dad. For some reason they thought they were on the PGA Tour and took forever on each hole and we barely got in nine holes and could have easily completed 15. The other two with them quite at nine, probably due to their frustration too.

Solid design

The Norman course was a solid layout with generous, fairways and enough challenge to satisfy a good golfer. No real spectacular holes but many good ones. The greens are deceptively tricky, and I thought a little slow.

Great course

The PGA West Norman course is a fantastic course in great shape. Felt bad taking a divot on such beautiful fairways. The greens were a bit slow but well maintained. The only negative is the high cost to play there if you don’t get a special deal or discount.

Only Got To Play 13 Holes

Beautiful Course. Our rating is largely based upon having to leave the course at 5PM when we had only completed 13 holes. This was not disclosed to us when we booked the round, or when we registered onsite. Very disappointing. The pro shop and restaurant both closed at 5PM as well.

Great course, reasonably wide, user-friendly fairways and consistent sandtraps..

Pace of play could be improved with marshalls

1 hour delayed tee time!

Beautiful course very bad time management. Showed up and they made everyone wait an hour at 1st tee and delayed everyone tee time because they were backed up. Unfortunately our round that we paid 18 for only worked out 9. Very slow marshall on opening tee. Beautiful course really would have loved to play the whole thing at the tee time I reserved.

Hi there! This is the Operations Manager at PGA West, Norman Course. We appreciate the feedback.

We are a semi-private facility and had a Men's Day shotgun event for our membership that was scheduled for 8:30am which was pushed back an hour due to a frost delay. This unfortunately pushed all tee times back an hour. We apologize for that inconvenience.

Considering you prepaid through GolfNow for the tee time we were unable to offer you a different rate. Also, any tee time after 12:00pm during January is scaled to reflect that we don't guarantee completion of the round. We certainly do our best to keep pace of play moving so that anyone teeing off after 12:00pm can hopefully finish.

Please feel free to reach out to the Operations Manager at our golf shop (760) 564-3902. I am happy to discuss your experience in further detail and see if I can help you in a potential future visit should you be interested.

Thank you for choosing to play with us!
