Pumpherston Golf Club, designed by Graeme Webster, offers a superior golfing challenge, including water features over the length of the 6,000-yard, par-70 golf course and R&A-standard greens.

A round at Pumpherston Golf Club begins on Paraffin Young, a 398-yard par 4 that requires a straight drive and attention on hazards surrounding the green: bunkers right, deep rough behind. Hitters unpack long games on Pentlands, the 516-yard par-5 10th, which features a narrow fairway, requiring a straight tee shot; 150 yards from the green, the fairway drops, making a tricky approach. Close the round on Iranapol, another long hole, at 505 yards and par 5, and where water guards the green, meaning that length alone won't help you.

Book a seat in the Pumpherston Golf Club's clubhouse early - and let the clubhouse caterer know about any dietary restrictions, which the staff can work with - and head up for lunch and a drink with views of the golf course.

Good course but spoiled by condition of fairways

The weather has not been great over the last few days but it has not been that bad! The first (newer) 10 holes were in a very poor condition. Even though we were taking the balls to the sides of the fairways it was almost impossible to find a dry piece of ground to play from. The fairways were soaking wet and very muddy. Trousers, carts and clubs were filthy after the first hole. This was a shame as all the greens were excellent and holes 11-17 were in good condition. I have played this course in the summer and it is great fun with a number of really interesting holes but I would not recommend anyone to play it in winter.
