Rating 69.3

Pumpherston Golf Club, designed by Graeme Webster, offers a superior golfing challenge, including water features over the length of the 6,000-yard, par-70 golf course and R&A-standard greens.

A round at Pumpherston Golf Club begins on Paraffin Young, a 398-yard par 4 that requires a straight drive and attention on hazards surrounding the green: bunkers right, deep rough behind. Hitters unpack long games on Pentlands, the 516-yard par-5 10th, which features a narrow fairway, requiring a straight tee shot; 150 yards from the green, the fairway drops, making a tricky approach. Close the round on Iranapol, another long hole, at 505 yards and par 5, and where water guards the green, meaning that length alone won't help you.

Book a seat in the Pumpherston Golf Club's clubhouse early - and let the clubhouse caterer know about any dietary restrictions, which the staff can work with - and head up for lunch and a drink with views of the golf course.

4hr 10min round

Played here a few weeks ago and decided to go back. Little did I know there was a golf outing on, the pace of play ruined the round, having two groups standing on a tee with a 3rd standing back is shambolic. I get courses need to make money and large parties bring in cash but their pace should be monitored and dealt with if they fall behind. Overall id give it another shot but id be wary of who else is on the course

Top quality

This course is up there with championship courses. Great variety of holes all of which are maintained immaculately. Will most definitely be back this year.

Fantastic condition

Not the first time I've played and definitely won't be the last.

The greens were lightening fast and made any downhill putt a real challenge. I would recommend Pumpherston to any golfer wanting a game on a lovely course in Great condition.

Excellent testing course

We played in unusual Scottish sunshine and the course was in excellent condition.

The course was immaculate and had several good testing golf holes.

Would definitely recommend

Tricky but great fun to think your way around

This was my second time on the course and came back because I enjoyed it first time, particularly a couple of holes where water comes in to play. My memory obviously failed me last time as there are at least 6 holes where it comes into play and a couple of ditches that can also sneak up on you if you're not paying attention. Add on a few dog legs and it all adds up to a course that you need to think rather than blast your way round and best played with an app to give you distances to hazards etc. Fastest and best condition greens I've played on this year and tough finish with two par fives when you're running on low.

Would happily play again tomorrow.

5 years later

Haven’t played Pumphie in over 5 years so was excited to go back and I’m glad I did, the course was in excellent condition and it was as busy as I’ve ever seen it.

Well done to everybody involved in making it one of the best courses I’ve played this year.

Be back very soon :)

Nice course ruined by ultra slow play.

First impressions were very good. Really friendly staff who let me use the members changing room as they don’t have a visitor’s locker room. Nice little chipping and putting green to practice too. The course seems well maintained too, lot of sand on the greens but the fairways are 1st rate. Unfortunately the thing that ruined it was the scourge of slow play. Going out before me were a 2 ball, then 2 x 3 balls who all appeared to know each other. They weren’t teeing off on time and despite giving them their full time allocation and half of mine, I still caught up with them by the time 2nd tee. I’ll preface this with the fact that I play off 20, hadn’t played for 2 months and had a brand new set of irons that I was having difficulty with. That gives you an idea how slow they were. Refused several times to wave me through and were so rude as to be marking their cards while still on the green. I eventually jumped from the 5th to the 7th which made things a little better but I had run out of time to complete my 18. Clubs in general really need to do more to combat this.

I am conflicted, I did enjoy the course but having paid full price for the 18 holes and managing 6 holes, I am really disappointed. This was a Tuesday lunchtime.

For me, clubs really need to put a senior member or secretary in a buggy to keep an eye on big groups to ensure that if they are playing slow, then they allow players through.

Great course

This course grabbed our attention on the golf now app with the photo of the signature 16th hole. The rest of the course was excellent. The weather certainly helped. Greens were in great condition. Can tell the course members look after with no pitch marks or divots. Really enjoyed playing. Slight downside is a few holes are not well marked to show where to go. But as I say, it's just a small grumble. I'm sure when playing the course a few times you get used to it.

I'd recommend this course to anyone looking from a change from their own course. Challenging at times but not too hard. Par 3s on the back 9 are all brilliant.
