Unpleasantly Surprised
I booked a round at Wilson Golf Course because of the deal I came across on Golfnow.com. It sounded great. They advertised $20 for the round WITH cart. When I got to the starter, I gave them my name and they let me know that they had just punched the greens of the Wilson Course that day. Not good. They also let me know that Golfnow had made a mistake and the deal DID NOT come with a cart included. I would need to pay an additional $13 for the cart, which meant $33 instead of $20. Either way, I was mostly bummed out about the condition of the greens at Wilson. I told them they should honor the deal from Golfnow and include the cart. They wouldn't agree to that and said that this was a reoccurring problem and an error that Golfnow was responsible for. Luckily they had a single spot available for me at the Harding course, on which the greens weren't aerated. It cost me $46 dollars to play Harding with a cart, instead of the $20 plus $2.50 reservation fee from Golfnow that I had expected to pay to play Wilson. Very misleading. I don't know who was at fault. The starter blamed Golfnow for the misinformation. From now on, IF I book another round from Golfnow, I will be skeptical and always call the course starter to confirm the specifics of the Golfnow deal. On the bright side, I shot my lowest score ever at Harding that day.
UNDER CONSTRUCTION
This was my first time playing here, and overall I had a pretty good experience. I read some other reviews and heard that the pace of play was very bad here. We either got very lucky or tee'd off at the right time which was 730am on a Friday morning. Our group of 4 finished our round in about 4-1/2. They lay out is pretty good, only complaint I have is that there is a lot of construction be done on the course, mostly on the car paths. Be ready for some detours. I really feel they should have given us a discount for playing through this at times, "mess".
Good layout but horrible conditions
Only decent thing I can say is the greens on the Wilson course were acceptable given this course is a muni-course. The main reason I gave this course (which I grew up playing over 30 years ago) a low rating was because the people that play here are all beginners or hacks with absolutely zero golf etiquette. So in fairness this is a good track but conditions are not suitable for the advanced level golfer UNLESS you tee off before 7:00 am when the players seem to be a little more serious and quicker in pace of play.
First time, Last time
Terrible, terrible, terrible. Never again.
Teed off 50 minutes late, waited another 40 minutes to play the 2nd hole. Food shack closed early on a 85-degree day. Cart died on the way back in. Staff was rude. Starter was trying to buy something on his phone instead of getting people moving out onto the course. Our scheduled tee time was severely delayed but somehow they managed to squeeze walk-ups in before us.
Need I say more?
Amazingly slow Front 9
Course was in decent condition, it is pretty long and the greens are challenging. The pace of play though was miserable through 12 holes, which took about 4 hours. We waited on every shot, every hole until the 13th when things picked up and we were able to finish in just over 5 hours. It was fun and perfect weather, but the pace was definitely the biggest down side.
Not Bad for this Particular Saturday
I used to play on a weekend in this course and the pace of the play was just excruciatingly slow. So getting a very good deal from Golfnow was with the expectation that this teetime will be the same. So surprised that it was less than 5 hours and was able to do errands after.
Great Course, Even with Work in Progress.
I have always liked this course, especially after it rains and the air is clean. The course is currently undergoing cart path improvements, which caused the first hole to play as a par four, and seventeen to be shortened to about a 320 yard par four. I imagine the alterations to the course layout will change as work continues, so be advised and call first. As for conditions, I thought everything was in very good shape. Good coverage in the fairways, and lots of deep, thick rough. The tee boxes and bunkers were standard muni condition. I thought the greens were fantastic. Firm and fast and very tricky if you were putting from the wrong spot. There were some gnats to deal with, but I've experienced way worse, here. Bring bug spray if you"re sensitive to gnats. All in all. a super layout with plenty of room to hit lots of drivers.
Cow pasture
Booked through GN at $45 to play, but when we checked in starter charged us $59
He aslo stated "if you cancel I will still charge you"
Showed him copy of GN booking and he said it was not valid ?
People who work there need to take a people skills class , there is no excuses for the sour attitudes you experience at this course
Only thing missing were the cows grazing in the fairway
Beautiful course
Very nice course . Its long and challenging. The course has been maintained really well. Lots of asians play here . Some of them good and others who dont respect humanity :) so be prepared for that - the course itself is a treat to play on.
Nice Public Course
Surprisingly good pace of play and the course was in great shape. Griffith Park has the tendency to allow too many golfers on the course causing a very slow pace of play. Especially when its a good course to walk and many players do. Friday morning was great. Not too many players making it a great experience.
Love the layout
Other than the 30 minute delay of our start time, we had an enjoyable round. Greens were not that fast but there were pin placements that required putting your ball with the proper pace. Tees were average and fairways were lush. Would really like to see the Clubhouse and Restaurant updated. It felt like walking into a 70's scene.
good greens
Fairways are really bad. tee boxes are ok. greens are the best part. Fast and rolls pretty true.
challengeable course for players
awsome and nice place in mountain of Griffith Park.
I like it to play every time!
Slowww
So SLOW. Good course but it is ruined by the slow pace. Fun seeing deer and coyotes.
Fun course with lots of wildlife.
I would defiantly play this course again. This is a busy course, but the staff did there best to get everyone out. I love long courses, and Wilson is nice and long. It's worth playing for sure.
Going back to wilson
Wilson is a great layout for a city course. The rain has this course green everywhere with the exception of a couple of fairways. The greens are in good shape but on the slow side. Bunkers, tees, and fairways are in good shape. I was surprised by the good pace of play it took my group 4:20 to get around with almost no delays. It's nice to see wild life (deer and coyotes) during a round of golf. The facilities still need to remodel. Overall a great outing and it's great that this courses are on golfnow.
Wilson
Too bad the city of Los Angeles has treated this asset like a poor step child. The fairways and greens were in good shape, but the course needs a lot of TLC.
Los Angeles gem
Played Wison for the first time yesterday and could not be happier. The staff was was wonderful and the course is a gem. Loved every minute of our round. A must play for those who enjoy well designed and playable courses.
Stay away
As the title suggests stay away...
I had a tee time at 12:24PM on a Saturday....
There is no starter at the tee box... all they do is give you a number when you check in... and basically you go to the tee box and find out what number the other golfers are and go in that order...
Finally was able to tee off at 1PM... yes 30 minutes of waiting...
Each hole took about 20 minutes to complete... YES 20 MINUTES!!!!
It got dark at 5pm so I was only able to play 12 holes...
Not a single marshall/ranger on the course... actually i only saw 7 employees total... 2 at the pro shop... 1 person checking you in... 1 at the cart rental... and 1 maintenance dude...
LOTS of waiting around...
never again am i coming here...
Great Course Long, but, fair
I found the staff very accomodating as a first time playing this course. Was advised that some greens were aerated. This is a very long course, but I accounted for it by playing up one set of tees.
