Ojai Valley Inn
About
Opened in 1923, Ojai Valley Inn Golf Course is one of California's first great courses. Over the decades that the course has been open, it has hosted a number of professional players and celebrities ranging from Arnold Palmer to Will Smith. George C. Thomas, Jr., who created the Riviera, collaborated with Billy Bell to design the original golf course but Jay Morrish made the layout considerably more challenging with renovations in 1988. Ten years later, two holes from the original Thomas/Bell layout that were lost during a redesign following WWII were completely restored and incorporated into the layout. The challenging golf course is very narrow in some spots and it features undulating greens that putt fast and true. The layout is not particularly long but it requires accuracy and proper club selection in order to score well.

April 14, 2017
First time playing here and enjoyed the day. The green aeration is almost grown out and puts are running close to true. Sand traps have inconsistent depth. Not much else to add to other reviews but some arrival directions:
After passing the security guard station the next facility you will come upon will be the dining facilities (do not park here as it is quite a distance to the golf facilities) pass this building and continue straight on what appears to be a service road, half way to parking you will pass the pro shop on your right and continue to the stop sign then turn left down the hill to parking. There are numerous passenger shuttles that will pick you up and bring you to the pro shop.
Enjoy your day!
Fantastic setting, fantastic golf
We had a wonderful time playing this course. My husband is a 9 index and I am a 14 (female.) The front 9 is particularly spectacular, with mountain views and gorgeous old trees. The course is challenging, particularly requires mind-over-matter with good course management skills for elevation changes, wind, and alarming bunkers on one particular par 3 on the back. There are four somewhat drab holes on the back 9 but other than that each hole is different from the next. Excellent greens allow a variety of pin placements. We had beautiful weather in early April and great pace of play...perhaps everyone was off the course watching The Masters.
Our only complaint is that arriving from off the property was a total mystery where we should go with our bags as well as our car. Signage to the 10th tee headed us off in the completely wrong direction...this needs to be more clear! Also the course would benefit from a snack shack at the turn...only available lunch items were either from the cart (fine, a few pre-made sandwich options) or order from your phone to the Pub, which would slow down play too much I think.
IF GOLF NOW...
RATING LOWER BECAUSE OF GREENS.
If GOLF NOW had let me know about the greens being punched recently, it would have ben a great round. No ADVISORY ALERT given, so greens were not very good. Its Ojai Valley Inn, its always going to be good.
Great Course
Ojai Inn Golf Course is amazing!
Fantastic conditions all around.
Steep and hilly.
Has a vista of the Mountains and Canyons.
My only dissent where the punched greens that were hard and fast and unreadable. And the fairways are tight!
Ojai spa
Loved the kindness of staff
Especially the starter
Cool guy
Love the course
A bit upset that back nine was closed
Not sure why
Played front twice
Will be back
Hopefully back nine will be open
Oh yeah greens were punched so that was
Kind of a bummer
Wish someone said mine would be closed and greens were aireated
For the $$
Have a good day
Ojai Valley Inn Golf
The course is is nostalgic and fair. It conjures thoughts of how golf courses used to be designed. Unforunately, there are no signs to direct visiting golfers while the resort is under construction. We spent 20 minutes making our way to the gold shop. Once on the course, there is minimal direction to the next hole... particularly from 9-10 & 18 to the parking lot. Also, the greens had recently been punched and the course reps did not disclose this information. The ammenities on the course offer some relief... good food and a quality watering hole offer relief. I qualify this course with 3.9 stars, the major distraction being the recently punched greens. Regardless, a fun 18 holes of golf.
We went into this our first time, being prepared for anything I brought copies of our reservation. We were greated with smiles and good service. The course is tough lots of challenges but the view was so beautiful the greens were so well kept up impresseive. The only small minus would be I needed someone to explain to us the smart carts and video pads how they work. At times the cart would not move and we kept hearing a beep thinking our phones but turned out the pad and smart carts have restricted areas of the course . Takes only one time to remember that
Gem of a course
This course is very scenic and peaseful. It is on the short side, but still quite challenging. The layout is interesting. Pace of play is good. The staff could not be more friendly.
A Classic!!
You'd never know Ojai was closing in on a hundred years old. Even with all the rain this year, the course is in excellent condition. It is a traditional layout, following the contours of the land. No gimmicks here. The greens are fast with subtle and some not so subtle breaks. Watch out for the false fronts. The setting is serene with clear skies and the Topa Topa mountains as a back drop. The course is very challenging and plays much longer than the scorecard. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
Jimmy's Pub is everything a 19th hole should be; a great look and feel, nice selection of beers, wines, excellent food and an attentive staff.
magical place
Ojai Valley Inn is such a beautiful place. The golf course is my favorite to play, love to get out there on Sunday's. Never too crowded and pace of play is good. Scenery is amazing and course is fun to play.
Great day at Ojai!
Staff is extremely friendly and accommodating, Jim the starter was terrific, got me off well before my tee time...at my request. Got paired up in a twosome with Dave who works at the Inn, really provided me a lot of advice as to where to hit my shots. Great experience, highly recommend!!
A great lay not far from home
Cause was in great shape for the amount of rain that week cart path only but all paths were very good would play course again
Ojai Valley Inn is a gem. Its like playing Bel Air or Riviera without the $100K+ membership fee. Course conditions were good but not awesome due to recent very heavy rains. The ball would land and stop immediately. Oddly enough, the greens were very hard and extremely fast. certainly not what you expect at a resort course. However, they were fair and rolled true. The staff is very friendly. Jim, the starter has been there forever and is a delight. He remembers frequent players and if there is a large outing will do everything possible to get you out in front of them. A real pro. Ojai Valley Inn is like stepping back in time and playing in the 1940s or 50s. Pace is quick. I've played there a dozen times or more and only once did my round exceed 4 hours. just a delightful golf experience.
Good time
My two brother and i had a great time at the golf course, it is a great track.
Scenic gem.
Ojai Inn golf course is a scenic gem and a challenging course. The front nine winds through oak trees and hills. Keep an eye out for the deer. The back nine opens up a little the the last three holes. 16th, 17th and 18 will keep your attention, hit it straight! Love the course and it was in great shape. Only negative was them putting a group off the back nine. Just as the group in front of us was making the turn. Slowed play on the back, after a non stop front.
Beautiful place
Great old course. They allow walking, which I did. Great experience, beautiful conditions, greens were fast and fun.
Can't wait to come back.
Quiet, peaceful round with no one around
We had our family playing 2 groups. The starter was great with accommodating us all, we loved him! The course is still in good shape even due to the drought of SoCal. We love how quiet and peaceful it is here. Ojai Valley Inn has become a "trendy" place it seems, just hope the golfing stays classy and one of our favorite places to relax and play a round. Also I understand if you want to hit the driving range, but if you're hipsters drinking wine, maybe chatting and "accidentally" throwing clubs might not be the best around people that pay for the Ojai golf experience.
