A course for beginners
I have played a lot of golf at ridgeway and will continue to do so if I notice that there is no one teeing off in front of me. It’s a good course for practicing your irons and is a decent challenge given how tree lined it is. Admittedly it’s not always in the best condition with consistent problems being the greens and tee boxes. On the last round I played it was like teeing off a cabbage patch and putting on a fairway (fairway of a nice course). Hence why it’s a good course for beginners. However it’s a frustrating course to play if your stuck behind them. Often people sharing clubs. And pace of play is completely pot luck.
This may sound harsh but it’s honest. The main positive comes from how cheap it is here. It’s great for a quick nine holes. But with a few tweaks and more maintenance. It could be a very decent course.
It's a 9 hole course, not 18, but with good driving range
Good course to start playing golf or if you only have a few hours and want to play casually rather than a full membership.
improving
I have played here many times, after not playing here for a while due to bad course conditions, i was surprised how it has improved in some areas yet the greens are still poorly maintained. for £13.50 it is okay. however id much rather spend the extra £1.50 and play castle heights down the road.
Great little course
A great 9 hole course, recent work has led to better conditions.
Course Has Gone Downhill (Don't waste your money)
Before i review the course. A positive. The clubhouse, staff, driving range and wedding venues are really good here. Just avoid the golf course
6 years ago when I started playing, this course was a little gem of a 9 hole course. Having not played there for about 3 years I decided to have a quick 9. Waste of time and money. The course has gone downhill. Greens are horrendous, lumpy, patchy, longer grass on the greens than my home clubs fairways. They let the practise green get so bad they just stuck a bench on it and pretended it wasnt there. Grass tee boxes have been replaced with awful perminant winter mats. They also let anyone on the course wearing anything. Saw a group of lads in rugby gear. Other players have no idea of golf etiquette or pace of play. I walked off after 6 holes which took 1 hour 40 minutes due to players ahead refusing to let me through.
Many of the members have now left and joined other clubs including my home course.
Wedding venue with a poor golf course
Used to be the better of the two pay and play courses on Caerphilly mountain, but has gone very much downhill while the other one has improved. Greens are awful, patchy and lumpy so makes putting more a matter of luck than skill. The course is generally poorly kept so v easy to lose balls even when they land on fair way. They seem to be trying to make some improvements but at the moment this is a wedding venue with a golf course rather than the other way around. At least it’s cheap.
Good Start
Full beginner, great for my level with plenty of scope for me to improve. Close to work and very reasonable value. Staff were friendly & accommodating even though there was a wedding during my visit,
Locals helpful & relaxed, also.
I played alone & struggled to find 7th Tee from 6th Green without asking the group behind me but that is because I did not read the map on the scorecard in my pocket.
Will come back for 9 holes after work on a regular basis
50/50
Played here many times over the years, but due to so many tee off times close to each other, hold ups were irritating
OK experience
The condition of the greens isn't good. It's a relatively cheap round of golf so I guess you get what you pay for. It was an enjoyable round with friends and no complaints about the value for money. However, it's not a course for the purist golfer who's trying to play to a decent handicap.
Greens are awful
Played a few years ago, but it’s gone downhill. Terrible dry bumpy greens, you had no idea what the ball was going to do. Grass much too long just off the fairway making stray shots difficult to find.
Great for Beginners
Ok so let’s get something straight. It’s £13.50 for 9 holes.
If you’re a proper golfer then you shouldn’t be expecting the belfry at that price.
For a beginner this course is great. The only thing I would say about it is that the fairways have one heck of a slope on them.
Other than that for £13 for the beginner this course is perfectly fine
Dust golf course (if you can call it that)
it wasn’t a great start when the group infront of us was not in golf attire, from this moment onwards i had an awful time, the greens were dust, the fairway felt like the rough and the rough may aswel of been the amazon rainforest.
was sold as a 18 hole course. got there and was very disappointed. played 2 holes and left
Ok
Decent for beginner golfers. Good value for money…greens and tee boxes not very well kept
Weeknight round
Played 9 holes at 6pm on a weeknight. Course was quiet and pace was good. A couple of very boggy areas despite very little recent rain, one of which was next to the 8th green. Otherwise was in good nick. Good value course and always friendly.
