Mt. Woodson Golf Club is one of San Diego County's most popular courses for a number of reasons, one being the spectacular setting. Nestled in the Ramona Valley, the course is sprawls across a dramatic landscape of towering oak trees, enormous granite boulders, and sparkling blue lakes. Nearly every hole on the golf course provides stunning views of the surrounding mountains and canyons. It is also known for being one of the most challenging and well maintained layouts in the area. The tight fairways and small greens demand accuracy. There are also plenty of interesting elevation changes throughout. The golf course offers true target-style golf that will test the shot-making abilities of even the most experienced players. One of the most unique features of the course is the 450-foot wooden bridge that winds through the treetops.

Conditions Made It Tough

A couple of golfers we met recommended we play Mt. Woodson and we're glad we did, but we would have preferred much better conditions. The very wet spring and heavy rain a few days before created rivers (literally) and ponds on many holes particularly on the front. This also resulted in sparse grass on a number of holes and either hard-panned bunkers or bunkers filled with water. The course is unique and requires accuracy over distance off the tee. A good score results from good approach shots, rather than drives of great distance. Many holes require a long iron rather than the driver, and the strategy based on the location off the tee does make for interesting and testing golf. The sheet provided at the pro shop upon arrival is extremely valuable in planning one's approach on many holes. I would recommend the course for its scenery and uniqueness.

Challenging course for a reasonable price!

Mt Woodson is a fun an challenging course with its rolling hills and tight fairways. For the most part it’s well kept but there are a few fairways that need better drainage for the rain. If you’re a newer golfer I would recommend bringing a good amount of balls because if you go out of bounds, most the the time you won’t be able to get your ball back. Over all it’s a course with great views and challenging holes.

Not worth the money

I played the course for the first time over the weekend. It was an $80 green fee and we were an 8 am tee time. The course was in pretty bad condition. For $80 you expect to have playable fairways, decent greens, sand in the sand traps, etc... There was water and mud everywhere. The starters were quite obnoxious as well.

Hi Paganev. Sorry to hear you were unhappy with your experience; however, given the fact that the week before your tee time we experienced five straight days of heavy rain, some water and mud would be expected anywhere you went. Hope to see you back in the Spring or Summer when rain is less common.

Another good round at Mt Woodson

Having played here many times we love the layout and the challenges it presents. Greens where fast and in very good shape.

Course I’m terrible shape

I love this course and have been playing it for the past 15 years. With that said it seems to go through periods where it’s in good shape and then really bad shape. Right now it’s in really bad shape. The tee boxes are almost all sand, barely and grass to hit off, greens have spots where they are also sand instead of grass. The fairways are all brown and dead. Around the greens there are many holes where the fringe has new sod that looks like it’s been punched. Some holes have a decent amount of sand in the traps but others are like hitting off of cement. This course has so much potential, the layout and scenery are amazing but they need to find a good grounds keeper that knows what he/she is doing.

Quirky, but fun!

Do not book on GOLF NOW for this course! Call the course for a less expensive rate. We received a handout telling us about each hole which was very useful.

Every hole a new adventure

As they say don’t be fooled by the par 70 or the length. This can be a really tough course especially from the tips. The drive between the holes is worth the fee.

Every hole was very picturesque. Would have given an higher overall and course rating if it had not been for the rough/sloped tee boxes and the meager practice facilities.

Grill food was great at a reasonable price.

On second thought I would play it again.

Fun course, great value

Hilly and challenging but nice and short. Greens a little rough and fairways a little dry, but overall pretty good. Would play again with GolfNow Hot Deal.
