Even when it's fast, it's slow.
There are not too many places where one can play a round and have an ocean view like here. Truly spectacular! A moderately challenging layout, with wide fairways. Large greens in good shape, some with moderately difficult breaks. The playing pace is always slow. Did I mention the playing pace is real slow!!! A fast round is about 5 hours... Forget about a 4 hour round. An average weekend round will typically take 6 1/2 hours... Really!
Best conditions in years
I play this course 15 times a year and this was the best conditions I have seen in 5 years. Fairways and tee boxes were cut beautifully and greens were pristine although super fast, 10 on the scale. For 42 bucks and the views of Catalina and Pacific Ocean this course is great! It was a 5 hour round teeing off at 9am only waited on the second and third holes then it got rolling at a good pace, only time its a 6 hour roud is on Fridays after 9am. Great job Los verdes!!
6hrs? Ridiculous.
This course is special and could be a quality experience. Unfortunately there is no Marshall and pace of play is not a priority. The staff should get trained on how to treat guests. Sad but true. Views will only make up for so much. A 6 hour round is not acceptable and gives golf a bad rap. Figure it out.
Very Good But....
Very good course in s great location but very slow pace of play. Need Marshalls to help with pace. Also, they should replace the Golf Shop personnel.
Dry, crusty, hard fairways and rough!
Once again..... an amazing course design ruined by its poor conditions. The greens were OK, pretty firm but scrappy slow and grain pointed every which way making putts impossible to predict on the Poa Annua. Teed off just before 1pm, and it took just over 5 hours, slow start till about the 6th hole then it moved OK - but only because most of the blue tees were all up front at the white so it gave the illusion of playing faster! Respectfully I obeyed the markers and played from them, instead of playing all the way back like I usually do, since I was grouped with some older gents who were very good company. But fair warning - there is hardly any grass out there, especially the rough which is all dried out hard pan caked mud patches. The fairways are fine, they should be dried out and thin, but why not give the rough some water instead so that the ball wouldn't go bouncing into the trees or the next fairway so much? With the severe slopes on some of the holes, it truly is unfair to see a perfectly placed shot into the middle of the fairway bounce sideways and continue rolling deep under the eaves of the trees, instead of being stopped by grassy rough? I would much prefer that there is a 2-inch rough on all sides than be stuck under the dried hard pan caked mud areas under the trees. Wouldn't you? I wish somebody would seriously just take the reins and take care of this place. The guy behind the counter was absolutely unfriendly, had no courtesy, and was a typical County worker automaton with no personality.
9 Holes in 4 hours
Unbelievably slow slow slow, never had such slow play experience anyway in the world.
Didn't know a round of golf could take this long/Horrible customer service
Immediately after walking into the pro shop the staff seemed angry to even see my playing partner and i's faces. He said nearly 3 words to us and seemed like he didn't even want to take our money. He seemed as if he would rather be anywhere else in the world than there.
Then as we go to tee off on #1 there is a starter on the first tee. Our group was only a two-some and he was about to send off a five-some directly in front of us. I spoke up and asked a player if he would rather play with our group instead, and he did.
All in all the course is absolutely beautiful but the clientele they receive and careless attitudes of the staff make this a nightmare of a golf round. I had 2 golf balls stolen directly out of the fairway and our round took 7 1/2 hours and we only got through 15 holes. I could have played 36 anywhere else by the time i played 15 holes here.
If you don't mind it taking 8 hours to play 18 holes of golf and want some good views this is your spot but for serious golfers that respect the integrity of the game i do not recommend this golf course.
Enjoyable afternoon
We came on a Thursday afternoon and like others mentioned the pace was slow but the real problem is they need to tamp thier greens. It's a beautiful course and views are spectacular.
Thought we were in Maui
Beautiful course, spectacular ocean views. Good layout, well maintained, nice greens. We escaped scorching weather in LA for gentle breezes and 77 degrees. Slow pace was due to crowding and some 5somes, but just relax and enjoy. BTW, all the greens break toward the ocean, just like in Maui.
Never again!
Beautiful views but not worth the super slow pace of play. We called it quits after 9 holes that took over 3 hours to play. This is a tired old LA County course that hasn't had any improvements in years. Too bad for such a great location.
Pace
Si slow!! It almost provoque an incident with other players ,6 hours to cover the 18 , no Marshall in sight
A fun, not too crowded day
The weather and views were amazing. The course was in pretty good shape, some dry spots but that is to be expected. The green speed varied from hole to hole at times which was a little bit frustrating since the greens are already fairly difficult. The bunkering is can be a challenge. Most fairways are wide open though, so that helps.
We went on a Monday afternoon, so it was not as crowded as it can be. Definitely try go off peak times and look for discount prices.
Some Father's Day
Tee time was an hour late and pace of play was well there wasn't any pace. Sitting is not my Idea of pace. Made it until the 15th and our cart ran out of juice and the sun had gone down. 5 hrs and only made it 15. Never again!
Slow pace of play
They are packing in 5 players per tee-time, and we paced at 5.75hrs for our round, but we had to leave early and skip the last 2 holes because it was going so slow. Our tee-time was delayed 30mins as well from our original 12:52 reservation. We had lunch prior to playing and while their burgers are usually good, these were too salty today. They forgot to give me a code for a bucket of balls prior to the round. Lastly the course is under severe repair, the cart path, and fairways on most holes had some major work being done. Usually this is a great public course for the money, especially for the money the value is exceptional, but not on Sunday. Its always slow so be prepared for a 5 - 5.5hr round.
Worst pace of play on any course anywhere
This is my last time playing this course since multiple attempts to come back meet with the same issue...SIX HOUR ROUND. This is the worst pace of play on any course I have every played, and every time I come here its the same thing. This course either needs to book fewer times on the weekend, or get an active marshal that moves people along. Every t box on the back 9 was back up two groups, taking around 10-15 minutes at each t box. There are plenty of courses on Golfnow for $52 green/cart fee that are just as enjoyable and play in 4.5 hours on the weekend. Maybe if people stopped playing here they would get the message, because all they say in the front office is "oh yeah, it gets backed up on the weekends"...FIX IT THEN!
Downhill fairways
Surprisingly the pace of play here last Sunday was good for this course. It is not unusual to take 6 plus hours to finish here. We started at 9:20 and only had to wait on the par threes to hit. Unfortunately the condition of the fairways and greens have deteriorated to an alarming degree. I'm assuming the ongoing water shortage is the reason for so many dried out and bare ground areas but I don't know why the greens were so bumpy. The practice putting greens were fine. The course fairways are starting to look like Victoria Park. The cart paths are still under repair so some minor constructions zones exist. The men's looker room bathroom stinks. The beautiful ocean views remain as this courses' main attraction.
Upgrades to course very nice
Water shortage does not help but still in good shape. Had early tee time pace of play war very good.
Love/Hate due to the excellent design, location versus pace and conditions
A nice layout at an amazing location overlooking the Pacific. Mostly it's the location. On most days here, it's truly spectacular. The layout is good, not great, but it could be an amazing course if it is not in such poor shape. The fairways are either thin or too wet from over-watering, hard and crusty to a splat mud. The conditions of the greens vary too, from good to terrible from hole to hole, the same thing, some hard and fast and others almost rotting and too soft. It's a County muni course run by American Golf Corp and they let out 5somes so that's what kills the pace, and because it's cheap, you get all the hackers at a pretty difficult golf course with all the slopes and tricky side hill lies. And with the fairways bare and absolutely no rough, the ball will take the slope and run out under the trees. It could be such a great place, but it is what it is, for now.
Worst Pace of Play in LA
Worst pace of play in Los Angeles/OC area. Teed off at 1:45pm and decided to leave after hole 15 at 7:30p. Nearly 6 hours to play 15 holes... Just awful. For those that don't want to do the math, that's 24 minutes a hole. No rangers regulating pace, no spacing between tee times, no chance at an enjoyable round. American Golf strikes again. Nothing quite like pulling up to tee 2 and your group is the THIRD waiting on the tee box. It was a joke.
Up the greens fees $10-15, space out the tee times, hire some rangers and this could easily be the best public course in the LA metro. Solid layout, cool location, great views; it has everything except good management.
Great views, the bunkers and tee boxes under repair, this course plays notoriuosly slowly.
The tee boxes, fairway bunkers and some greens were under repair in early November. Pace of play for a late morning tee time was decent but mostly because I walked - otherwise, it would have been frustrating. Several 5 player groups on the course. Good value, great views, but anecdotally chronically slow.
