Course Highlights
Red Tail's course layout consistently earns high praise for its fun, challenging design with memorable holes around the lake. Friendly staff, smooth check-in, and comfortable pace of play make this an outstanding value for the money.

About

Holes 18
Type Semi-Private
Style Links
Par 72
Length 7152 yards
Slope 141
Rating 75.1

Atypical of many Florida golf courses, RedTail Golf Club is a links-style layout dotted with 100-year-old oak trees and azaleas among its rolling green fairways. Designed by Dave Harman, who also did Shingle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, the course features four lakes with water coming into play on the last five holes. Holes 14-18 work their way around the largest lake on the course, while the finishing hole's approach shot plays over another body of water in front of the clubhouse. Located in rural Sorrento a little more than a half hour north of Orlando, RedTail Golf Club prides itself on catering to "members only."

It’s Florida, it’s golf, staff great, it’s under $50…back off trashing this course.

We played today and thoroughly enjoyed it because we know what conditions are and it was very easy on the eyes. Obviously a great conditioned course in early 2000s. Just pick, clean, and place. Hit putts firm, and enjoy…or cough up $150 plus elsewhere. Easy 50 minute drive up 429 Toll from Disney area.

Some spectacular finishing holes around a huge swamp. Saw huge alligators.

Will definitely go back.

Fun Layout

They put down some weed-killer & grass supplement today, so hopefully that will help dispose of the patches of a leafy lettuce in most greens. Tee boxes need grass, and sand bunkers need maintenance, but layout is fun & challenging. I fell off the Bogie Train, even made Birdie #9, but DbleBogie #10 (first of 3 on back9).......and back to my usual mid-80s score. I luv holes 14-17 around the lake/bowl, not that my scores indicate such. I'm hopin' RedTail comes back into form, but we can still have fun at the less expensive rates. Thanx to GNs Hot Deals, I'll be back again in a few months.

Here's the Truth!

Is the course in great shape? No

Is it value priced? Yes

Greens: playable, but issues with sanded areas & brussel sprout leaves (maybe Winter Rye that needs treatment, cut close & rolled to prevent bumpy rolls).

Pace-of-play (10am start on a sunny, but chilly morning) was awesome, no wait, no push! 18holes in little over 3hrs. Most tee-boxes have no grass, but you put a peg in the sand and hit the golfing ball. Fairways result in tight lies, sand bunkers are not maintained well, and greens are far from perfect.. Recent cold spell thru Central Fla has affected most courses, and RedTail is minimally staffed/budgeted, which translates into lesser Greens Fees. The layout is outstanding (although I don't know how many times it will take me to par #18), nice Pro & cart-gal, but nothing for clubhouse amenities. At any rate, I'd rather get the GN Hor Deal Special, join a nice fellow from Canada, hit mulligans & converse ..........than pay 5x more just to say I played OCN or Disney.. Please, my wish is to bring back RedTail to what it was 10yrs ago, so I keep coming back.

Avoid

Not worth it. I’d play it for $10 max. Good layout but they gave up trying to maintain the course. Dirt/sand areas all over the course.

Terrible

What can be said about no grass on the tee boxes, very little grass on the fairways, bunkers with sand hard as concrete and the greens with some kind of fungus growing that prevents the ball from rolling straight; what can be said TERRIBLE. This course should pay the players for playing here. This course has gone down the ski slope in the last few weeks. Hope they find a greens keeper that knows how to put a course together.

Not Good.

Conditions are terrible out there. Mostly hitting off dirt or dead, flattened grass. Bunkers were hard and tee boxes were terrible. Not much good to say about it. The greens were OK for the most part except small patches of grass coming up interfered with put lines.

Fix the greens

I have always loved the layout. The greens are a good pace. Semi fast. But there is an invasive grass that makes putting an adventure. The bunkers need more sand too.

Course is nothing but frozen weeds. Tee boxes dirt. Fairways pure weeds. Definitely not worth 35 bucks. 20 bucks maybe. Pitiful..

Fun course, many gullies that come into play. They are OK this time of year, but will be a problem when the grow in. Often no real landing areas in front of green. (1,18)

Improving

I haven’t played this course in six months or so, but it has improved. It used to be an excellent course and charged a premium price, but has gone downhill over the years. The tee boxes and greens have weeds and bare spots, but you’re paying 65% of other courses. It’s a good value to practice your skills and get your yardages.

Terrible conditions

Course is in terrible shape. Poor condition everywhere.

Greens were fast which was fine but seriously needs some work done on the whole course.

Layout is good though.

Full and Honest Assessment

The course is improving—albeit gradually. A friend and I played this course frequently when it was newer and in much better condition, and the layout has always been exceptional. Unfortunately, over the years, the property fell into significant disrepair. Given its past condition, it is easy to understand the criticism it has received. At its lowest point, the course struggled across nearly all areas: tee boxes were in poor shape, greens were diseased and inadequately maintained, and fairways were inconsistent and deteriorated.

Fast forward to today, and there are clear signs of positive change. The staff was friendly, transparent, and candid about the course’s previous condition and the challenges it had faced. More importantly, they conveyed that meaningful efforts are underway to restore the course. Unlike some other local facilities, such as Timucuan, there is a genuine sense that management is committed to long-term improvement rather than cosmetic fixes.

During our round, the progress was evident, though uneven. Tee boxes remain in rough condition and require significant attention. Fairways varied from hole to hole, with some areas showing improvement and others still lagging behind. The greens, however, have improved considerably. While not yet top-tier, they are markedly better than in the past—mostly healthy, largely green, and rolling true, despite a few remaining diseased patches.

Notably, for the first time in years, we observed multiple grounds crew members actively working throughout the course, which was encouraging. The presence of a beverage cart was also a welcome addition and something we do not recall from previous visits.

This course has the potential to be among the best in Central Florida. With consistent irrigation, aggressive reseeding, and—most critically—serious investment in rebuilding the tee boxes and maintaining the greens, it can continue its upward trajectory and work toward regaining its former reputation.

We will be back.
