About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2017.
The Champions Club at the Retreat was carefully carved from the canyons that surround the Cleveland National Forest. The golf course closely follows the natural contours and depressions of the landscape, providing a variety of elevation changes with which to contend. The undulating greens usually have multiple tiers and the hills and valleys guarantee a few blind shots and forced carries. Your shots won't need length necessarily, but they will need to be straight. Each hole offers not only a unique design thanks to the diverse terrain but also different, equally stunning views. To make this formidable golf course more playable for a wider range of skill levels, a 2011 renovation took out 16 punishing fairway and greenside bunkers but there are still plenty there to provide a challenge.

Good, but used to be much better.
Elevation changes, tight fairways, great views, challenging course. A good challenge for 20 handicappers and better. Not a course for beginners. The fairways were in pretty rough shape, and the greens are fast.
overall ok - not a favorite
course ok - very slow and there were too many blind shots. never having played it before, it made it slow for all players and was not overly impressed
Very challenging course well kept.
Very nice course with great views of the valley. Well Kept and a pleasure to golf and enjoy your day.
Unforgiving nice course
You may hit a shot that is just a little off and you can kiss your ball goodbye. Layout on the first couple of holes is a little silly. Greens were interesting with multiple tiers on almost every hole. Greens look faster than they are. Did pass a coiled up rattlesnake on the cart path on hole 13 and almost had to change my shorts. That perspective helped me calm down and not be that upset about a lost ball. Pace was fine, could have been faster. They seem to not have enough carts- a problem. Range is short and only for irons, drivers not allowed. A straight drive is critical on the course so not being able to practice ahead of time is a drag.
FIRE YOUR GREENSKEEPER NOW!
1. Fairways and Greens were in horrendous shape.
Troon or OB Sports please come here and show these guys how to keep up their lawn. The mountain views were incredible, but he low up keep on the fairways (weeds and crab grass all over the place) took away from the beauty of this place.
2. Customer Service
Hate to sound like a Golf Elitetess, but there is certain level of expectations when you enter a gated community golf course. I was suprised there was no attendant at the bag drop and we had to load our own bags on the cart. In addition there was no starter or range marshal (we had a 2 some cut in front of us on the back 9).
3. Equipment Malfunction / Good Customer Follow up
Our cart begin to lose power at 12. This may seem like a small issue but unfortunately this course is designed in the mountains. We had to push the cart for at 4 holes uphill, which delayed play. We attempted to call the clubhouse but because of the mountain area there was no cell availability. The 3 some behind us was nice enough to give up one of their carts after seeing us strugling. When we returned to the clubhose the manager was understanding of the situation and provided us with another round for free.
This was golf outing weekend for my 50th birthday and we had just come in from Palm Springs (JW Desert Springs Golf Course and SilverRock). This was the 2nd leg of the trip which also include Trump National in LA. I saw the rating on CR, but chose to ignore them. After seeing how bad the grounds were I would be in full agreement that it rates a 3.0 vs. 5.0 it could be if they FIRED THEIR GREENSKEEPER and got somebody in there to make it a top notch facility, which I believe it could be.
This course is tough, especially putting.
I have played this course a few times, The hills and the narrow
fairways make it a tough course. The greens are tough to read
and there are lots of breaks in them. The course is in good shape, there were a few wet spots but other than that it was in nice shape.
Tough but nice course.
I really like this course but it sure is tough. I will play again and I look forward to it but it is a pretty big challenge for average golfers. It is a nice course though.
Horrible
From check in, course condition, and lay out this place was horrible. The staff was rude treating people like they should not be there and the course is in need of some care.
Challenging
I finds this course very challenging with it's blind shots and undulating greens and yet I will play again and again and again!
Tough track.
Course was in decent shape. Greens rolled true. Reads that broke a certain direction, did indeed break in that direction. This course is very undulated. Lots of uphill and downhill shots. Black tees were hairy. Fairways had spots that were muddy due to drainage issues. Pace of play was BRUTAL.
If you tend to spray the ball off the tee this track is going to eat your lunch. Have fun!
Great Track. The length is the not the chalenge, you must have all the shots. The greens were a little slow but very challenging.
The course was in good shape. the greens were a little slower than normal and the pins were definitely "Sunday Pins". Pace of play was good as well. Don't be fooled by the length, the teeth of the course are narrow fairways, elevated greens, and distance control. You must have all the shots in your bag to score well. A must play, great views as well.
Good Potential
The fairways are in poor condition. They are uneven, very dry, and have tufts of grass everywhere. It looks like they've done some work in places and still need to repair the ground. The sand traps are as hard as the cart paths. They do not allow for any bounce at all. Several of the traps are filled with large stones, some the size of a golf ball. Dig them up and put in some high quality sand. The greens were decent but you could not stop the ball. It was virtually impossible to get the ball to check up even with a 60' wedge. The greens did putt pretty well and the ball rolled true to the line. This course is very challenging and requires smart decision making, but poor conditions should not be part of the challenge.
great expeience
fairways have wierd grass, need to be part billygoat to go from carts to green
Tough course
In had a 12:40 t time, arrived at 11:50 and they paired me up with someone right away so I got out early. First time I have played this course and was not disappointed. It is in very good condition for this time of year. Fairways in decent shape even with some dormant grass. It is a very tough course and you can pretty much leave your driver in the bag unless you are able to hit your target with it. The scenery is spectacular. The only complaint I have is the bunkers need much improvement as most have a lot of rocks in them. Well worth the price
I got on golf now.
Not as great as it use to be...
about two years ago i played and the course was perfect. yesterday course was dead greens were nice and fast but had tons of pebbles and divots. Fairways were terrible and pace of play was outrageous for a wednesday afternoon. There was a foursome group that had two holes open in front of them and were backing the whole course up. It would have been nice for a marshall to make them speed up or let other groups pass them. not a great experience, i wont be back anytime soon.
This course used to be a great challenging course, but...
The outside staff was great but the pro shop staff didn't seem interested in promoting the course or even providing a fair amount of customer service. The Asst pro that checked us in was dismissive and unfriendly...
The course is as challenging as i like but the fairways were in horrible condition and had a lot of dirt spots and patchy clumps of grass, tons of unfilled divots which suggests poorly managed maintenance.
its to bad because the potential of this course is great but conditions have gotten worse and worse every time i play there.
Difficult course to play if novice
Enjoyed the course but some of the areas that was roped of was very difficult to walk, as really hilly but give you a good work out.
Would play it again as this was the first time I played it and now I know where to hit etc. Green where good for this time of year.
One of my faorite course.
I played here about 7 times now.
I had 5 great experience and 2 bad ones.
Condition and changeableness of this course make Retreat one of the most fun place to golf.
However during my last visit I had to wait for on hour to play.
According to Retreat, GolfNow.com made a mistake of double booking about 20+ tee time.
I was only able to finish 13 holes before sunset.
Proshop was nice enough to give me half off coupon for next round at Retreat.
Once when I played 36 holes at Retreat, their cart went out of battery where I had to walk last few holes.
If you are planing all day of golf at retreat, make sure to switch out your cart in the middle.
Frost Delay
Played on a Sunday but delayed due to frost. We were told by phone our 7:30 t-time would be delayed 30 minutes. At the Pro-shop we were told 45 minute delay. When asked what their policy is for Frost delays we were told "They" decide on a spur of the moment. It turned out to be they let "Members off first (no shotgun start to accommodate the delay). We finally teed off at 9:15. The course was fine but many sections were cart-path only because of recent rain. This is a VERY hilly course and some of the walk to and from the cart were exhausting! On a day where t-times are as scheduled and no cart-path only rule this could have been a much more memorable experience. There are some spectacular views from the course. It is a course that you have to play once to know how to play it. Many blind spots that you would play differently if known about in advance.
