About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2017.
The Champions Club at the Retreat was carefully carved from the canyons that surround the Cleveland National Forest. The golf course closely follows the natural contours and depressions of the landscape, providing a variety of elevation changes with which to contend. The undulating greens usually have multiple tiers and the hills and valleys guarantee a few blind shots and forced carries. Your shots won't need length necessarily, but they will need to be straight. Each hole offers not only a unique design thanks to the diverse terrain but also different, equally stunning views. To make this formidable golf course more playable for a wider range of skill levels, a 2011 renovation took out 16 punishing fairway and greenside bunkers but there are still plenty there to provide a challenge.

Took 6.5 hrs to play
Slow slow play. It should never take 6.5 hrs to play 18 holes of golf. Too many novice players playing from the blue and black tees when they could not even hit it past the womans tee. A couple twosomes on a saturday with slow play? fairways need attention but greens were very nice though.
lots of elevation changes! big green.
Bunkers need care from maintenance. Lots of elevated t boxes help shorten yardage.
Tough Course
Very nice course decent condition considering it February..Greens were in very good condition. Very tough course for the average player. I would recommend it to my friends.
Rob
The course needs a lot of work!
There was a staff asking me if he could carry my bag when I just parked my car. When I said I could do it myself, he turned around and left with his cart without having any facial expression. Very rude!
Other staff I run into were very friendly. The staff cleaning our clubs at the 18th hole should have asked first before he did it.
The course was very challenging but needs a lot of work even it's winter time.
I didn't see any course marshal around. The pace of play was very slow at the back nine. There were people talking trash loudly on the course in front of us all day without any common courtesy and people hitting balls towards us from behind. No one was around to whom we could properly talked to about those.
Over all, I am not a regular here and probably won't be either.
Regards,
Unfulfilled promise
Very interesting and challenging track, in a unique setting. Played in perfect 75-degree weather at mid-day on a Friday. With all of the elevation change, and chaparral just off the fairways on many holes, this course demands distance and direction control. The tee boxes and greens were in great shape.
Unfortunately, that's about it for the positives. The fairways on this course were like a brown-beige patchwork quilt. With the exception of one nice bunker around the 18th green, the bunkers were filled with rocks. The pace of play was slow.
All in all, I was playing golf and I enjoyed myself. I paid $40 for the round, which seems like a decent value. I understand that the club and surrounding neighborhood have had tough times, so I don't want to be overly critical. It's just a shame that the course has gotten into this condition. I'll likely come back once or twice a year to see how it's progressing.
Great course
Loved the course. Beatiful and challenging, can't ask for anything else.
Raining lightly, but had a great round, challenging holes challenged me beyond my skill level, made it great golf
Other golfers had told me to give the course a try but bring lots of balls! Good advice for the Champions Club track. It was raining off and on, lightly mostly, all in all it was a fantastic day of golf. The staff was very friendly and helpful as it was my first time around. I'll definately return to try and improve my score (to high to admit) The greens were outstanding, the fairways were wet but hey it was raining! If you haven't been to the Club, I strongly suggest you give it a shot. But yes, bring some balls!
Very slow play, and course in poor condition. Save your money.
This course was not is good condition and I would not recommend it.
Real challenging, everywhere on the whole course!
some fairways are getting firm or grasses are dried up;
All holes have tricky/uneven greens, sever sand bunkers and slopes. of course, 80% + fairways are severly sloped ( up or down hills, side way slopes are "everywhere"...)
this good course is the most hilly in S Cal, or maybe in inland empire... I do not recommend this to Handicapper 20 or +;
but if you can handle the bad lies and sand bunkers, maybe you can enjoy there...
Superb Greens; Fairways not so much.
YIkes. Ouch.
Simply the two words that come to mind after my first time here.
Tremendous layout for the target golfer. Read my entire review with photos at greenskeeper online community.
Very Challenging Course
The Winter grass die off has set into the fairways so it it very dry ground is hard, althjough this helps for those low lying shots to run. Greens are in good shape and as always very challenging when it comes to pin placement. People are freindlu and courteous. No long waiting for play.
Design is excellent
Although the design is excellent, they are still working on the grass in the fairways. The greens are nice though. I probably won't play this course again, until after they have fixed the grass in the fairways.
Good to play
Nice course to play. Not a easy one though. Bring some extra balls.
Cart-Path Only? - So Hard to play!!!
I played on 2/1/2012(Thursday). That day was "Cart Path Only".
It's was so hard to play because the course has ups-and-downs.
It was almost climbimg mountains :(
So I am not recommending the course if you can not use the cart to the fairway(Cart Path Only).
Also the Golfnow(or other site) should have noticed the fact that
players can not drive cart inside the course.
Lots of Slope
I have been playing this course for a number of years now and have seen the overall conditions deteriorate somewhat, especially the fairways. The greens and tee boxes are still in pretty good shape and the putting surfaces roll fairly true and consistent. The starter told me a few months back that they were getting a new maintenance company so conditions may improve in the months to come. Some holes on this course are steep and hilly and have forced carries making them very difficult. Some holes are pretty narrow as well, and a lot of holes require some thought in club selection and shot placement. Also, home building is picking up around the course. The big beef I have is the pace of play from my 12/22/12 round. They had a 2 hour frost delay in the morning. However, once lifted, they would only let golfers out on #1 and not simultaneously let some groups out on #10 to speed things along. This was making play extremely slow on this day. We had an 11:50 tee time but did not tee off till 12:30, and were only able to get 16 holes in. Otherwise, pace of play is usually pretty decent here. All in all, I give this course an average value ranking, which might be a little generous. Is fun and challenging at times, a little too hilly and steep at others, and at other times, offering dramatic views of the area. Will be interesting to see if overall course conditions improve in the months to come.
Very tough test of shotmaking, no room for error.
This was the first time I've played the Champions course @ the Retreat. The course was very wet from the rain Tuesday so there was some pretty sloppy areas in the fairways although the course was very playable and the greens were in great condition. The greens are typically very large but almost every one was bisected by a severe ridge that separated them into two small greens that made approach shots extremely critical. Some seemed impossible to hold when approaching with long irons, which was often the case on the uphill holes or holes with elevated greens. My index is 9.3 and I played Blue tees, hit the ball well most of the day and shot 86. Very tough to read the greens first time out with the varying slopes, mountains, valleys and lakes that make up the course. I did enjoy the course and would love to go back when it dries out a little. It took us all of 4 1/4 hours to play, we were a twosome, we caught a foursome and had to wait on the last 7 or 8 holes. Great deal for the price I got from Golf Now ($35).
Champions Retreat
This station to station course is awesome for the more experienced golfer. If you are a beginner, bring lots of golf balls. The view is awesome!!!
very scenic
challenging course dont have to be a long hitter to enjoy. greens were in great shape.
pace of play was good.
Target Golf. Rarely do you get a flat lie. Many blind shots.
Greens were grown out, probably because of the difficulty of the course and small undulating greens. I would assume they were trying to make the greens hold the approach shots. Fairways were a mess with many patched spots and muddy areas.
too many slow player. Should have marshall to come out to conrol the game
