Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2017.

The Champions Club at the Retreat was carefully carved from the canyons that surround the Cleveland National Forest. The golf course closely follows the natural contours and depressions of the landscape, providing a variety of elevation changes with which to contend. The undulating greens usually have multiple tiers and the hills and valleys guarantee a few blind shots and forced carries. Your shots won't need length necessarily, but they will need to be straight. Each hole offers not only a unique design thanks to the diverse terrain but also different, equally stunning views. To make this formidable golf course more playable for a wider range of skill levels, a 2011 renovation took out 16 punishing fairway and greenside bunkers but there are still plenty there to provide a challenge.

Pace of play is too slow.

Pace of play is too slow. The course is too difficult for the novice golfers who come here for the value. Unfortunately, the club does not have the funds to keep the course in top condition. They are forced to lower greens fees to keep revenue coming in, which attracts novice golfers who should not be playing this course.

Imagination Built In

Booked a tee time on this course and was a bit concerned after reading the reviews. The Pro Shop gentleman was not very friendly. The starter was very nice and helpful. Practice range was nice. You can only hit irons on the range. Tee boxes were ok, fairways are wet and need some work, greens were actually pretty nice. Greens are big so be ready to use the slope in the greens to try and get the ball close. Used the same ball all day, but I can see people with a lower skill level loosing a dozen. I give this course only two stars because of the unfriendlyness of the pro shop staff and the condition of the fairways. I would play this course again but it would be great if the fairways were not in rough shape.

Challenging but fun course

This was my first time playing Champions club so I wasn't sure what to expect. If it's your first time, expect alot of uneven lies. That is to say, there are very few flat spots and lots of hills. This makes for challenging second shots and approaches. The greens too are very deceiving. Overall a good course to play especially if you are looking for something different.

difficult!!

it's a challenging course and if you're up for a challenge, this is the course. however, i wouldn't recommend it for players that can't consistently shoot in the 80s. It can really beat you up pretty good out here.

this is a challenging, fun coarse which will test your goal skill. It demands you determine how to best approach the green and where the flag is.

This is a course that is appropriate for all levels of play. It will
improve the skills of the high-mid handicappers and challenge those with low handicaps. I enjoy the changing terrain and the views over the canyon. great place to golf.

Rack Rates are way over priced

This course is a nightmare for the average golfer.

Not only are there no bail out areas on the course, but when you hit a good shot you run into casual water from poor drainage, cratered greens, and poorly maintained fairways.

Will not be back.

-- Do not play this course if you are above a 10 handicap, I shot a better round at Bethpage Black (under US Open Conditions) then I did here--

This course is challenging and yet friendly

This is a hilly course where most holes have dramatic sloping fairway from tee to green which makes it challenging. It is also the reason of slow pace of play especially for higher handicap players. However, unlike some hilly courses, this one is friendlier in that most fairway is reasonably wide and has only a couple of blind shots situations. A fun course to play in my opinion. The only complaint we have is the green in general, they are very very slow and very sandy which puts a huge dent to an otherwise great golfing experience.

Challenging and fun to play.

Challenging course not for the high handicapper. A number of blind shots that could be a problem for a first time player. Greens were moderately fast but true. Rewards shots kept in play and penalizes you if you stray.

Don't let the yardages fool you, it is tough.

Always in good shape this course will challenge you at a minimum or bring you to your knees at its worst. Beautiful course, until you have to hit your next shot. Greens are true and usually quick. Hilly and well maintained. It was so tough they removed some bunkers a year or so ago.

Bring Your A Game

This is one of the tougher public courses in the I.E. for mid-handicappers and above. Holes 2 and 10-12 among the toughest you will find. I like to play here once every six months or so to gauge my game at Champions. Accuracy off the tee and good putting needed to score well moreso here than most courses.
