Nick Faldo brings his exacting, often critical eye to West Coast golf for the first time at this Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert. Faldo wanted a design that forced a ton of strategic choices and the architect team of Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt delivered for him.

Options? You want options!

Ten of Shadow Ridge's 18 holes are doglegs. The towering Santa Rosa Mountains serve as backdrop. The tall native tawny grasses contrasts sharply with the white sand bunkering. But it's the golf choices that are likely to seize your attention at this 7,006-yard, par-71 course.

The finish alone is enough to rattle an average golfer to the bone. No. 17 is a 157-yard par 3 that puts the wind in your face and nothing but trouble straight ahead. There's a lake to carry, deep bunkers and a green that slants left to right like a wayward chalkboard. No. 18, a 446-yard par-4, places both a stream and big fairway bunkers right in the straightest path to the green.

"The fairways are generous and the bunkering style is bold," Faldo said. "And the greens have plenty of subtle undulations that reward and encourage a variety of approach shots."

Excellent golf coarse, one of the best overall we have played.. always the same great place to play and practice. Practice facilities are excellent.

Excellent overall. Coarse plays long for the average player but very fair.

5 1/2 hour round

The reason why I am soooo upset with this course is because they rented over 30 sets of clubs out. They could have told us before we tee'd off. This caused one of the slowest pace of play I have ever played (5 1/2 hours). The cart girl also took forever to come by.

The reason why I gave a 5 for the friendliness is because they were friendly. I wish they we a little more honest. I would never play here again or recommend to play here. Play Indian Wells instead. Much better course and worth the extra money.

Fun Track

Right from the first tee it was a fun round, loved the course lay out and challenging green speeds with some tricky pins.

Whomever set pins that day did a great job of making a few really easy , a few not so easy and a few having a bad morning pins !

If your going to golf in the palm desert area this has to be on your list of places to golf .

Overall Good Experience

The course was in really good shape from tee to green and service was excellent. Pace of play was good, done in 4 hours and 15 minutes. The track is not the longest or most difficult in the area, but a fun play. I was able to get a hot deal which made it a fantastic value. Would definitely play again.

Great Course, Horrible Pace.

Its a great course - one of the best in the valley, but the pace of play is horrible. It was backed up 3 deep on the second hole and stayed that way the entire round. The marshal had no remorse, suggested it was normal, and made it clear he wasn't going to do anything about it. I really like the course and its great value, but it will be a while before I return - I wanna play golf, not site see. They obviously flood the tee-times and are more concerned with todays revenue vs golfers returning.

Great Course.. Professional, Friendly staff

With the dry weather many of CA's Golf courses have taken a beating. This course was in excellent condition, green green everywhere. Fun layout, friendly staff checking in on Golfers needs and or questions.

Nice fluff grass in bounds everywhere.

What an old school treat!

5200 yards and 0 birdies. Why? Well I suck for one but the short course is protected by tiny greens and great bunkering. We liked it and especially for $22

Waited every shot. 5 hour round. We almost didn’t finish.

Put with two guys that were distracting as occasional golfers.

Pin placements a little tricked up for a Resort course .

Stunning and Beautiful Must Play

The course is gorgeous. Greens and fairways where in great shape. The views are as good as it gets. Lots of water and it really added beauty to the course. It had long hole that were hard to reach in two and short holes you had to avoid the sand. The only complaint is they left the rough really high and it slows down play because you could 't find your ball even when you barely missed the fairway. We had to always wait on the groups in front because it took a long time to find the ball as the rough was 3 -7 inches in some spots. I hope the grounds keeper is listening this isn't the US Open and we aren't pros.

Beautiful Course

You hardly know you are playing in the desert on this course. The course was in immaculate shape. Some challenging holes but still player friendly. Would definitely play this course again.

Great Resort Course

I played with my wife, her sister and her sister's boyfriend. The fairways were ample and in great shape - you can be a bit offline and still have a second shot. rough was thick enough to make you think. Greens were slow but had just been re-seeded. We had a good pace pf play until the last few holes. Water on a short par 3 and a tough 18th hole slowed things down and we finished in the dark after a 4:20 round. A nice course to play if you have a range of skills in your foursome.

Great layout

Had a great day! Pace of play was fantastic and conditions were great. Played a little slow from overseeding but was nice and green and lush. Would definitely play again.
