Nick Faldo brings his exacting, often critical eye to West Coast golf for the first time at this Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert. Faldo wanted a design that forced a ton of strategic choices and the architect team of Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt delivered for him.

Options? You want options!

Ten of Shadow Ridge's 18 holes are doglegs. The towering Santa Rosa Mountains serve as backdrop. The tall native tawny grasses contrasts sharply with the white sand bunkering. But it's the golf choices that are likely to seize your attention at this 7,006-yard, par-71 course.

The finish alone is enough to rattle an average golfer to the bone. No. 17 is a 157-yard par 3 that puts the wind in your face and nothing but trouble straight ahead. There's a lake to carry, deep bunkers and a green that slants left to right like a wayward chalkboard. No. 18, a 446-yard par-4, places both a stream and big fairway bunkers right in the straightest path to the green.

"The fairways are generous and the bunkering style is bold," Faldo said. "And the greens have plenty of subtle undulations that reward and encourage a variety of approach shots."

Excellent Golf Day

Shadow Ridge is in perfect condition with moderately fast, smooth greens, fairways that are well manicures with no bare spots. Highly recommended for anyone in the low desert looking for a great day of golf!

Good Variety

Elevated tees then elevated greens. Some nice shorter holes. Hard to access pins and severely shaped greens. No. 1 and No. 18 are very challenging.

Marshall needs to relax!

We played as a foursome. 3 out of our 4some are single digit handicaps. 4some behind us playing forward tees so they were riding us almost the whole day. Marshall told us twice to pick up play...2nd time he told us I confronted him and told him to tell the group behind us to stop playing junior tees and move back on tee boxes. Other than this the course was great and staff friendly.

Nice Resort course

The course is a very nice layout and design giving the golfer excellent long holes and views of the mountains in the distance. The one thing about it is that there is really no single signature hole that I can recall. Many holes had a great look while standing on the tee, none really had the look that took your breathe away and made you say Wow. A nice course to play for Resort golf and worth a single round.

Golf course was in good condition. Grassy fairways. Nice layout and a little challenging. Sand traps need to be sprayed as there was grass growing in them. Steep price if paying their $170 pp fee rather than using online discount services. Course doesn't warrant those prices.

Decent, but expected better conditions.

Decent round, although I was expecting better. I play about 80 rounds per year, 2 months of those down in the Palm Desert area. Having played most of the courses in this area this year (2017), I expected more from Shadow Ridge. The course felt "scruffy" to me – it didn't have the polish that many of the other $150 / round courses here have. The layout is interesting, although greens / bunkers would be very challenging for new players.

Not bad, but I wouldn't rush back unless it was a great deal.

Nice Track

Overall the facility is very good. Pro Shop staff are excellent and checking with the GolfNow booking was fast and efficient. Practice area is extensive so arrive early to take advantage. Coffee and breakfast munchies are readily available. Course is well laid out with a good variety of challenges including bunkers, water, false fronts and many tee box options for players of all skill levels.

We were grouped with another couple of the same playing level so that was a bonus.

The cart staff and grounds keepers were great and it felt like we were alone on the course as the pace of play was perfect.

The only downside ws more aesthetic in that many of the waste bunkers were mot groomed and there was leaf and plant debris on some tee boxes and fairways, probably due to recent wind storms.

Overall a good experience and thanks to the Golf Now deal price very reasonable for resort golf.

Very nice resort course

The staff was fantastic, very helpful. The course was in good shape all around. There is plenty of variety in the type of holes. Par 3's were challenging from the back 2 tee boxes. Fairways well kept and greens were in good condition. We plan to play it again while we are here.

Always a great time at Shadow Ridge!

Retired Alberta snowbirds, always enjoy playing The Marriott Shadow Ridge Course.

We own a couple of timeshare weeks at The Villages and every time we come down we get a few rounds in.

All the holes are a test of length and accuracy.

Wonderful Course

This course is kept in great condition. Staff is nice. If you can get in on the deals ($119) the course is so worth it but I don't think I would pay the higher price of $179. I would play here everyday if I could!

I thought the course was in good shape. Fair sets of tees for all levels. Generous fairways with larger undulating greens. First time players shouldn't have any problems playing. Staff was understaffed and not particularily friendly or helpful. It was early in the morning so that may have been the reason. We played SilverRock the day before and the vibe of the staff was so much better.
