Shadow Ridge Golf Club
About
Nick Faldo brings his exacting, often critical eye to West Coast golf for the first time at this Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert. Faldo wanted a design that forced a ton of strategic choices and the architect team of Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt delivered for him.
Options? You want options!
Ten of Shadow Ridge's 18 holes are doglegs. The towering Santa Rosa Mountains serve as backdrop. The tall native tawny grasses contrasts sharply with the white sand bunkering. But it's the golf choices that are likely to seize your attention at this 7,006-yard, par-71 course.
The finish alone is enough to rattle an average golfer to the bone. No. 17 is a 157-yard par 3 that puts the wind in your face and nothing but trouble straight ahead. There's a lake to carry, deep bunkers and a green that slants left to right like a wayward chalkboard. No. 18, a 446-yard par-4, places both a stream and big fairway bunkers right in the straightest path to the green.
"The fairways are generous and the bunkering style is bold," Faldo said. "And the greens have plenty of subtle undulations that reward and encourage a variety of approach shots."

Very challenging from the tips
Great layout that will provide a challenge for all levels of skill. Greens rolled nice and were very receptive.
Excellent course for couples
This course is a great mix of challenge from the back tees versus very playable tees for my wife. The layout is strong and the course was in good shape even for an afternoon round in July.
Human Hazards Abound
I had not played the course for years. I was really looking forward to playing it because I consider it a great test of golf skill. I love the practice facility, and was there to evaluate it since they offer practice memberships. All was going well until I got to the practice putting green where out of nowhere a range ball landed a few feet from my feet. Since the driving range was empty, and the ball was not the color of their range balls, I was mystified. The mystery would be solved in a few holes.
A good portion of the course is lined with hotel/timeshare units. I was absolutely horrified when at various holes the fairways were filled with children playing in water hazards or hitting balls. It made playing the course impossible and dangerous. When I mentioned this to the cart barn staff at the end of the round, all I got was shrugs.
I'm glad I did not pay season rates to play. A great day of golf was ruined by my inability to finish the round due to human hazards. I'd like my time and money back, but good luck with that.
I say avoid this wonderful course at all costs unless you get a guarantee in advance that there will be no child hazards in play.
Lawnmower has no manner at all.
Stupid lawnmower peoples bother us so many times on fairway and green so many times.
Don't want to play here again!
Always a challenge
Love this course. It will challenge you. Requires you to be accurate. Bunkers, water along with the desert landscape though beautiful will need you to be careful. Rolling fairways, greens are a nice touch.
Great course which is excellently maintained without being manicured.
Obstacles are strategically well placed to make Shadow Ridge a really challenging golf course. Tough greens which are difficult to read. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
Excellent
Course was in excellent condition.
Course management required!
It was our first time at this course. We struggled the first 18 holes without having familiarity of the course layout and the greens. Many shots were lost hitting into the greens as the ball would roll off or end up with difficult putts.
The second 18 holes we all improved our scores significantly! All in all it was a challenging layout and would come back again!
Challenging Faldo Course
This is a challenging course that requires distance, accuracy, and course management. Most of par 4's are manageable, but there are some that are more than 450 yds. Shorter par 4's are well protected by bunkers, and there are Faldo's signature "catches" around the greens, so you have to be very accurate with your approach shots. Greens are undulating, usually three-tiers, and quite fast. There are some memorable holes as well (ex. #7, #9, #16, and #17). All in all, if you can find a great deal, this is one of the "must" courses in the Palm Springs area.
Great layout but poorly maintained
Great layout. Many interesting holes and much variety. There is water and bunkers, with narrow and wide fairways. Some target golf holes while others are wide open. It was almost always possible to see the danger but all carts had GPS. Having said all that, know the day we played the fairways were dry and hard. There was many dead patches in the fairways that were as hard a concrete. Many of the green were also dry and hard. There was very little sand in the traps. My partner didn't like the elevated greens but they were fine for me. The green fees for the course can not be justified. After playing twelve rounds at eleven other courses in the area, I suggest you look elsewhere as many of the $49.00 courses are in better shape and are as much fun to play.
Very nice coarse
The coarse and facility were very nice!
Challenging bunker layout
Very challenging layout with plenty of bunkers.
Shadow Ridge
Love the course. Has long and short holes. Scoring requires excellent short game and putting skills. A favorite to play every time I come to the area.
Great Track Wonderful Condition
I always wanted to play here but it was above my expense budget however, finally got a couple of deals in the same week, worth the wait, wish it was a bit cheaper though.
Great Course
This is a very good and very challenging course. Tee selection to match your ability is important. A must play for lower to mid handi-cap players.
Shadow
Good course. Pleasant staff. Pricy in comparison to others this time of year.
1st round @ SR
Staff was very friendly and helpful from the parking lot to the first tee. Course was fun and greens rolled great with lots of challenge from undulation, no easy 2 putts. Cloudy day so views were limited, but I'm sure it's great on clear days. Fairways were a bit tight for my liking but green and fair. Lots of condos around, not in the way of golfers since fairways are plenty wide. The grounds around the condos looked pretty trashy in the back drop of such a well maintained course, obviously a different standard or maintenance group.
make sure there is no shotgun the day you play
If there is you will not have a cart with enough battery to make the thrn
the staff was very very very busy because of hundreds of people waiting to play in the shotgun
thjs is the nicest place to play in a laege comminity of sun city so you get lots of people playing
the carta were quick chargedmeaning they were not charged a d we had to wait in tbe garage in ,ine with our golfbags to getacart
the course need lkts morewateras very smallportion is green and tbe rough was very high for palm slrings
greens were nice but tough rolling putts lots of sandbut not very good sand
Played a bit slow
Great course and the only thing that would have made it more enjoyable would have been if our foursome had not been held up by a slow foursome in front of us. By the time we got to the back nine we waited on every tee box and then for every approach shot. It was a hot day and by the time we got to the 15th hole we decided to not play it so we could get in front of the slow foursome, as we suspected there was no one on the 16th tee box, fairway or green.
As stated, a very nice course that just needs to do something to keep the rate of play moving along, they did have nine minutes between tee times so the issue is simply no one asking slow players to speed up or have them miss a hole. One slow foursome affects all the golfers playing behind them.
Update.... Brett, the manager at Shadow Ridge was wonderful. He reached out to me, and apologized profusely for my experience. He did not offer a solution to the problem, but offered a free replay. A birdie in my book.
