Nick Faldo brings his exacting, often critical eye to West Coast golf for the first time at this Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert. Faldo wanted a design that forced a ton of strategic choices and the architect team of Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt delivered for him.

Ten of Shadow Ridge's 18 holes are doglegs. The towering Santa Rosa Mountains serve as backdrop. The tall native tawny grasses contrasts sharply with the white sand bunkering. But it's the golf choices that are likely to seize your attention at this 7,006-yard, par-71 course.
The finish alone is enough to rattle an average golfer to the bone. No. 17 is a 157-yard par 3 that puts the wind in your face and nothing but trouble straight ahead. There's a lake to carry, deep bunkers and a green that slants left to right like a wayward chalkboard. No. 18, a 446-yard par-4, places both a stream and big fairway bunkers right in the straightest path to the green.
"The fairways are generous and the bunkering style is bold," Faldo said. "And the greens have plenty of subtle undulations that reward and encourage a variety of approach shots."

Fantastic in all facets of the game. Can't go wrong here right now. A joy to play.
Challenging Layout
Very attractive layout requiring good shotmaking. Bunkers protect most greens including deep bunkers in front of several greens. Day I played the greens were very firm and it was difficult to get approach shots to stop. Green speeds were fast and greens are challenging to read. Beautiful setting, but don't expect to score well with firmness and speed of greens.
Great Design
Every whole offers challenging shots throughout the entire hole. Makes you think through every shot. A lot of fun to play and the course has been in excellent condition all four times we've played over the last few years.

Staff friendliness
I was very impressed with the staff friendliness from the moment we arrived with the cart person, the desk staff with our check-in, the starter, the course marshal,
back to the cart person...All extremely friendly and helpful. They did everything they could to get us off early before the predicted storm hit and they did it!
Fun Course
Every hole is unique. Loved the undulating layout, makes you think. Staff had very professional, but friendly attitude. Will be back. Well done!!!
Good Falco layout.
Plays well with several tee selections offering multiple degrees of difficulty. Good layout and great staff. Difficult but fair greens.

Challenging layout that encourages use of many clubs coupled with large greens made for a fantastic setting.
Private setting, great staff
First time for this course, had been given excellent reviews by friends and lived up to the billing. From the easy access from parking lot area, to the friendly pro shop staff, just started the golf day perfectly, driving range was close by, Ed the starter was helpful and provided great course insight. The holes are very player friendly for a high handicap player like myself, but myself and wife with two others in our group played 17 holes in just over 4 hours before dark. The course slowed quite a bit on the back nine even with twosome groups ahead. The holes are very private with great views and great conditions, wide fairways, spacious difficult greens, plenty of large protective bunkers. Will definitely play again

I've been an owner at Marriott timeshares for the past 8 years and played this course 5 days a year over Thanksgiving. 2016 is the best year yet! The course is in amazing condition, the staff is consistently working to improve the experience and the layout...is incredible.

Fun Track in Great Shape
Great experience here. Very friendly staff. Course overall in great shape from tee to green. Finished round in 4 1/2 hours. One striking feature about course is the abundance of strategically placed bunkers throughout course. Overall a good experience and would definitely play again.
