Nick Faldo brings his exacting, often critical eye to West Coast golf for the first time at this Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert. Faldo wanted a design that forced a ton of strategic choices and the architect team of Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt delivered for him.

Options? You want options!

Ten of Shadow Ridge's 18 holes are doglegs. The towering Santa Rosa Mountains serve as backdrop. The tall native tawny grasses contrasts sharply with the white sand bunkering. But it's the golf choices that are likely to seize your attention at this 7,006-yard, par-71 course.

The finish alone is enough to rattle an average golfer to the bone. No. 17 is a 157-yard par 3 that puts the wind in your face and nothing but trouble straight ahead. There's a lake to carry, deep bunkers and a green that slants left to right like a wayward chalkboard. No. 18, a 446-yard par-4, places both a stream and big fairway bunkers right in the straightest path to the green.

"The fairways are generous and the bunkering style is bold," Faldo said. "And the greens have plenty of subtle undulations that reward and encourage a variety of approach shots."

Top Course and Great Track

We golfed this excellent track at under $40 several times. The course is in excellent shape and the greens were pure, decently fast and true. This is a beautiful Course with a challenging layout. Fortunately, you can make it reasonable and fun to play by moving up some to the forward tees. At $40+ this is a no brainer and is a bargain at double that too. Friendly, professional staff and outside service people make it a top course for sure. If I HAD TO FIND one negative, it would only be that the range balls have seen better days. Otherwise quit reading the reviews and book a tee time there NOW!!!

Excellent experience

Got a special deal on golf now otherwise probably wouldn't have played here but super glad I did. Excellent gps but its one of those courses that you have to play at least once to know where to go with your drives and approaches. Greens were fast and true. Warm up facilities top notch. There is a locker room to clean up after though I only used the restroom. Pace was really good. Finished in 345 saw the group in front of us but didn't ever catch up and never sea the group behind.

A fun day

They have a very good practice area. Would like to have seen a few more balls at the practice trap. Very friendly. The price has gone up a lot (too much) this year, but they are busy. We have played it before a few times, but it was out of our price range this year. Fortunately we were able to work out a very very good deal. Fairways pretty good, greens true but a bit slower than I expected. Tee off areas needed some work for a course of this reputation. There are a lot of nice challenging holes and one or two weird ones. Straight pays off here. Weather was great. We started just before 1:00 and were able to finish okay. In general, it was a good day.

A beautiful setting for golf

The course is challenging and the undulating greens make for a lot of putts.

Bunker city

Played early morning at 6:45. A little dew on the the ground made the greens slow for the first 45 minutes or so. Great layout. I would not play the gold tees if you can it it +250 off the tee. You just won't need your driver if so. Overall friendly landing areas and difficult approach shots to greens with lots of undulation. Very fun course indeed. I prefer Thailand course to castle course in the Palm Springs area!

Great course, pace was a bit rough.

This course is in amazing condition, from the range to the putting green, to the pro shop. The only complaint, because it's a resort golf course, little if anything is said about pace of play or allowing a group to play through. Understood, but still a bit painful. However, it will not stop me from playing there again. Next time I'll try and be the first group off.

Another beautiful course on a lovely day

Shadow Ridge is another beautiful golf course that is well run and maintained. Our day just started too late and we ran out of sunlight. Play in front of us was a bit slow. Very deep bunkers caught our golf balls two times and cost us a few strokes. All in all, a very pleasant experience. The jackrabbits were fun to see. Now those are ears!

A Gem

My first time playing Shadow Ridge, my first thought is ' absolutely fun, challenging, course to play.

From tee to green in excellent shape.

The Combo Tee is an excellent choice, for yardage, not too long, not too short.

Lots of well placed bunkers, greens are great pace.

Fun fun

Great finishing hole which requires that perfect tee shot.

One of the best in the Coachella Valley

Always in good shape except for some of the waste bunkers. Greens fast and true but tricky. Always challenging, especially the bunkers. Good winter season pricing after 1200PM.

Challenging Layout

Very attractive layout requiring good shotmaking. Bunkers protect most greens including deep bunkers in front of several greens. Day I played the greens were very firm and it was difficult to get approach shots to stop. Green speeds were fast and greens are challenging to read. Beautiful setting, but don't expect to score well with firmness and speed of greens.

Great Design

Every whole offers challenging shots throughout the entire hole. Makes you think through every shot. A lot of fun to play and the course has been in excellent condition all four times we've played over the last few years.
