Shadow Ridge Golf Club
About
Nick Faldo brings his exacting, often critical eye to West Coast golf for the first time at this Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert. Faldo wanted a design that forced a ton of strategic choices and the architect team of Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt delivered for him.
Options? You want options!
Ten of Shadow Ridge's 18 holes are doglegs. The towering Santa Rosa Mountains serve as backdrop. The tall native tawny grasses contrasts sharply with the white sand bunkering. But it's the golf choices that are likely to seize your attention at this 7,006-yard, par-71 course.
The finish alone is enough to rattle an average golfer to the bone. No. 17 is a 157-yard par 3 that puts the wind in your face and nothing but trouble straight ahead. There's a lake to carry, deep bunkers and a green that slants left to right like a wayward chalkboard. No. 18, a 446-yard par-4, places both a stream and big fairway bunkers right in the straightest path to the green.
"The fairways are generous and the bunkering style is bold," Faldo said. "And the greens have plenty of subtle undulations that reward and encourage a variety of approach shots."

Nice course and has its challenges
We enjoyed this course. The wind was howling when we started, but died down after several holes. The course is challenging and the greens are a bit tricky. We played with a time share owner and they gave us plenty of tips which was helpful. Would play here again.
Shadow Ridge 2016
Course was in fantastic shape. Very challenging and does not let up. Wind kicked up which added to some of the degree of difficulty. Only a few tight holes but lots of trouble around the greens if not hitting accurate shots. We were joined by two men from Canada which added to the experience. Played in 4:05 so pace of play was great. Spectacular views everywhere you looked.
Well designed course for all skill levels
I am an 8 handicap player and found the course to be an interesting layout that is somewhat challenging. Nick Faldo did a good job of designing Shadow Ridge for all skill levels. The other three players in my group were occasional golfers with high handicaps, yet the course was very playable for them. The well-placed bunkers and the subtle links-style terrain around the greens made the course fun for me. The staff was very helpful too. I'll be back.
Shadow Ridge
Played the Greens (6621/71.5/130) in 4H, 45M, matched up with Donna, Peggy & Nancy. The weather was around 65, clear with a little breeze.
I enjoy this course layout and the course conditions were near perfect. Numerous large fairway bunkers to avoid, but the landing areas on most par 4's & par 5's tee shots are generous in width. However, from the tee shot landing area in, the difficulty goes up considerably. The greens are large, undulating and well protected by traps or hazards. MUCH more break than you would initially think. There are also many runoff or collection areas around these greens, so putts or chips that are hit offline, too weak or too bold can easily end up off the green.
The tees had most divots already repaired. Very lush and well maintained.
The fairways were lush and well maintained. Most divots already repaired. Mowed close, enjoyed watching shots roll close to the ground like watching the Masters on TV.
The rough was also lush and just tall enough to make you think twice when using longer clubs.
The sand traps were well maintained with beautiful white sand. Numerous traps that appear to be green side from the tee are actually 25-50 yards from greens, so you can easily get unusual length sand shots here.
I felt like the par 71 layout played tougher than the ratings indicated because of the green complexes. the layout has numerous shorter par 4's that could produce doubles or worse equally as easy as a par/birdie. Two par 4's over 460 from even the next to back set of tees. Par 3's a good variation in length and look.
The customer service was excellent from everyone encountered. Drink cart out and around numerous times. Excellent practice facility. Overall, a very fun layout in excellent condition. Definitely recommended.
SO SO
THIS IS A NICE COURSE, BUT THE AREA HAS MUCH MUCH BETTER FOR SAME OR LOWER PRICE.
Good but.....
There are so many courses in the area that its course was average because we played two or three other more beautiful more challenging courses 15 minutes away there are so many quarts is in the area that this course was average because we played to or three other more beautiful more challenging courses 15 minutes away
Shadow Ridge
Played the Greens (6621/71.5/130) in 4H, 10M, matched up with Dave & Troy using Underpar. The weather was clear, mid 60's, little wind, excellent for golf.
The course conditions were near perfect. Matt's prior review was spot on. Driving areas on most par 4's & par 5's are generous in width. Numerous fairway bunkers to avoid, but I found many to not be in my prime landing zones as I was either short of or over many of them from the Greens. However, from your tee shot in, the difficulty goes up considerably. The greens are large, well protected by traps or hazards and are very undulating. I almost NEVER had a straight putt and was often playing 2 to 3' of break on even 15-25' putts... and frequently not playing enough break. There are also many runoff or collection areas around these greens, so putts or chips that are hit offline, too weak or too bold can easily end up off the green.
Tees lush and well maintained. Most divots already repaired.
Both the fairways and rough were lush and well maintained. Most divots already repaired.
The beautiful white sand was adequate in amount, good in quality and very well maintained. Numerous traps are 25-50 yards from greens, so you can easily get unusual length sand shots here.

nice course
have played this before. the second experience was also good until the wind came up on the back nine. Turned out to be extremely difficult..a sand storm for the last four holes. Greens were fast.
Shadow Ridge
This is a beautiful course. Perfect for a golf get-away. Would recommend staying at the Marriott for a golf weekend.
The practice facilities are amazing. Well manicured and a huge layout. Endless practice balls if you have a tee time that day. Great bunker practice, short range, long range and big putting area.
Carts are in great shape. Score cards, pencils, divot filler and ice in the coolers. All the touches are there.
Best golf in Palm Desert.

Awesome
The course was very well groomed, greens in fantastic shape. I highly reccomend this course to all! Well done people.
Food I sadly say was horrible. Selling bad fish is not a wise move. To me it's simply a lazy chef. Over-all I'd play it in a heart beat but I would bring my own food. Over priced and pretty sad condition.
Enjoy the round you'll love it.
Love it.
Lots of sand bunkers make it challenging . hills and humps add more interest. Not as many houses so close as on some of the others. We like the natural shrubs and dessert surroundings. W3 will be back!
Nice course but slow play
While on our winter getaway from the Pacific Northwest, my wife and I played Shadow Ridge. We found the course to be extremely friendly off the tee but your approach shots had to be dead on or else you would be penalized around the green. As a 9.5 handicap player the course required me to stay focused. For a high handicap player, the play around the greens would be challenging. I'm sure if you played the course every week I would become familiar with the undulations and hazards around the greens. Our saving grace was playing with a great couple, they both have played the course multiple times so they coached us on each hole. The pace of play was slow but bearable. The staff at the course made us feel special and were extremely friendly. I give the staff the highest rating for their customer service, keep up the great job.
Got awesome price off of GolfNow Hot Deals
Best price off a hot deal on Golf Now 36 dollars each started at 12:45 and was able to finish 18. Awesome course in great shape, friendly staff, good pace of play best bang for the buck so far this year !
Cool morning but course made up for it
Morning started out very cool but found the course very playable. Wide fairways, tricky greens with some undulation but more with the subtle breaks. Very pretty course and holes not real close together so you have the feel you are out there by yourself. Not a true "desert" course as there are many trees. Helped that I played well. Staff was not real friendly and almost seemed to avoid us. I really enjoyed this course and would definitely go back.
A must play golf course.
Shadow Ridge is one of my top 5 courses in the valley. The fairways and rough are perfect in height. The greens are difficult to read but are realistic.
Cart paths only.
It was a pity that it was cart party's only, which unnecessarily slowed the pace of play down. To try to speed up the pace the ranger asked us to play three holes using 90 degrees, why could this not be done at all holes ?
The halfway stop was a cart, you do not pass the clubhouse. Otherwise a good facility.
Extremely Slow Play
While the course was in excellent shape, the pace of play was extremely slow - Close to 5 hours to play the round. On more than 1 occasion there were 3 groups waiting on a tee box. We were behind 2 threesomes who were waiting for a slow foursome. The course marshal said we were within the pace of play guidelines. He made no effort to improve things. After looking at the scorecard, it said the standard was 4.5 hours per round. Unfortunately in my opinion that is a very low standard. There is no reason you cannot complete a round of golf in under 4 hours, especially with carts. My wife and I often complete a round in under 3 hours so anything over 3.5 hours seems slow to us. The course itself is beautiful and I would play it again given the right conditions but when you wait on every shot, it is difficult to get any consistent timing. I would say that the course staff that we had interaction with was cordial but not friendly. It felt like a bit of a stuffy atmosphere to us. We played 9 times on our vacation (8 of those rounds were in under 3.5 hours). If we were to rank the 9 times we played on pace of play and friendliness of staff, this course would be the worst of the 9 while probably having the best playing conditions.
Great Course and Even Better Instruction!
We went down for a 2-Day instruction school at Marriott Golf Academy, so had the opportunity to play the course twice.
There are several sets of tees and the fairways are very generous, to suit every type of player. The greens are large and undulating, but not terribly fast, so again it allows players from every level to compete.
We had a great experience playing, but the true highlight of our short trip was instruction at the Academy by Senior Instructor, Mike Ellis. Even though our handicaps and skill levels are very different based on the length of time we've played the game, Mike was able to assess our swings in all aspects of the game and give us immediate feedback, plus take-away drills that we can work on to improve our games going forward. They also have state of the art video equipment that allows you to access your video at any time to recall the finer points of your lesson. Mike was professional, friendly, easy to talk to and we both felt that we could not have asked for anything more at the end of our two days. Highly recommended!
